Where in Melbourne is it safe to go on your own to meet people ?

New to Melbourne and I will be living on my own for a few months and want to know where it is safe for a Woman to go for something to eat and a drink at night

Brunswick Street Fitzroy, there are plenty of good people around that area, food and drinks a plenty, Fairly laid back crowd, Avoid smith street around the corner from brunswick st, theres alot of junkys roaming around! Regardless, Ive never had a bad experience in Brunswick Street, more of the "alternative" crowd, with friendly smiles!
