How can you possible leave off New York City? Arguable the best in the world.
I'd drop sydney off that list. I don't think I've been to Santa Barbara (CA) so i can't comment on dat.
The rest .. yep, I'd agree (i've not been to Las Vegas, but I can guess it would be a fun place to party).
I also want to see
*) Shanghai, China
*) Prague, Czech Republic
and not city related...
*) Some snow resorts in Canada and Switzerland
*) Scuba Diving in the Maldives and Galapogas
*) Internation Space Station
I totally agree about NY. Glad you put Spain in there though, it is easily one of the best countries in the world to visit.
How can you say that about Sydney. It has the most beautiful harbour in the world and just the best places to go. Las Vegas is just another world. We stayed at the Wynn Hotel for a night then moved down the other end to the Golden Nuggett. What a difference it was a great change. Outside the hotel there was a sort of mall with a curved roof all the way over it. All night there were music videos being played on the roof which was awesome. But when they played Queen's "We Will Rock You" everyone came out of the casinos and all started clapping to the beat. The mall was packed. I don't think I will ever forget it - just amazing. Fabulous shows on too. Amazing shopping. Take time out to go up to the Charlestown Mountains - really lovely.
Yeah, Spain is fun. The locals have a bad temper though. We were heading back to our hotel in Barcelona one evening and just in front of us, a guy came running out of a restaurant followed by some chefs who proceeded to throw meat cleavers at him! I don't know what he had done. The chefs did not get him but they gave a dear old lady a bit of a nasty cut on her leg! Could not believe it!!!
Shanghai is magic. The people are really friendly although the language is a problem. The gardens are superb and so peaceful. It is so clean - every morning a council worker came out and wiped over all the children's play equipment in the park across the road from where we were staying and swept up every fallen leaf etc. Accommodation was really nice. Only thing a bit dodgy was the food - it was difficult to order food because what it looked like, was not necessarily correct. Great shopping and good idea to get on the ex pats internet network to find out good restaurants and shopping haunts. China is well worth seeing.
Hey siderny99,
I think aussies just get a little bit blasé about Sydney in general. I'm from Melbourne, and I'm always in Sydney (and I travel a lot around the world) and I wouldn't put it in my top 10 cities. But I'm sure if I lived overseas, it might make it.
Las Vegas, hell yeah. I stayed in Wynn hotel, and will be again back there in Jan, so can't wait. Totally agree with you on that one regarding the city, but did you not like the Wynn? Is that the reason you moved?
Spain - I found the people very friendly when I was there a few years back, but I have heard they can be quite rude. Meat cleaver story sounds very disturbing, I'm glad that did not happen to me...only in europe.
I've never been to China, but it's def on my list of cities to visit.
Have you been to the Greek Islands. Some of them would have to be in my favourite places, I absolutely loved them when I was there a few years back.
AJ
Hi AJ.!
Oh I love Melbourne. The coffee and the food is just sooooo good. It has a much more friendly feel than Sydney. However, being from Sydney initially, and having lived in Perth for ten years and Brisbane for 15 years, I still think Sydney is very special. To this day, when I fly back and we fly over the Bridge, I get a bit sad that I have to go back to Qld sooner or later.
With regard to the Wynn, there was definitely no problem with it at all but we just thought there would be more happening at the other end of the strip and there was. I did have a laugh about the rules for eating the snacks in the rooms and also the charge to put anything in their fridge! The Golden Nugget was not quite so posh but very nice just the same and quite a lot more to do outside the hotel precinct. Went to see The Lion King which was absolutely brilliant. Hope you have a great time when you get back there. I have no doubt you will!!
Have not been to the Greek Islands. I have never heard a bad word about them so I can understand how you love it. Maybe we will go one day. I would really love to - the Greek people are so much fun!
Yeah, the meat cleaver. In hindsight it was funny but at the time it was a bit scary. We could only get accommodation in this horrible, revolting backpacker place. I sat up all night as I'm sure the beds had bugs. This place was in a backstreet as was the restaurant - it may not have been so physical if it had been the main street.
China is definitely one of the best places. We went to Mission Hills Golf Club and as we drove through the boom gates, where we had to show ID, the guards were all dressed in military uniform with white gloves . After the ID thing, they salute you through which was something new for me! The gardens were just amazing and the clubhouse had trophies and memorabilia all through it.
As I said, Shanghai is really good and very interesting. The Bund, along the river is all French. Marvellous old buildings and just awesome new ones. The Pramac raceway is just something else. So space age. The guys from Phillip Island or the old Oran Park would have just loved the facilities there. If I can find the web address for the expats, I will give it to you. They have all the info on everything!!
