Reviews of South Yarra, VIC

"Gone down the victim of it's own success path"

South Yarra was a fun place to go out in back in the 90s and 2000s. That all changed when it became popular and expensive. The boring pretentious crowd moved in and the fun crowd moved away and no longer wanted to visit. This followed with fun places being shut down and taken over by developers who built large volumes of apartments where the life of the party used to be. It's not so much fun, or a destination any more. The shopping and foot traffic have disappeared and as a result it is rundown.

great area to socialise and make friends, many young families and older retired rich people. not the best place if you don’t like crowds and loud sounds. lots of places to eat and drink.

"For young professionals who like restaurants and bars nearby. However alot of vacant shops these days and not enough foot traffic."

Lots of apartments for those who are young and wanting to live in a neighbourhood with other young working professionals. Everything is convenient with easy access into the CBD. Not peaceful unless you live high up tower apartments. Abit cramped if you have a family as not alot of green space. Public primary schools here are full to the max, children full in a classes of 25 x 7 classes. Congested area for families. Lots of car congestion. Heaps of beauty places for women, lots of going out places and fitness businesses.

"Only for the young who want live entertainment"

Very crowded trendy place. So many apartments has increased the amount of obvious foot traffic in the area. Great for local businesses however can feel noisy and hectic as not much green spaces. Easy access to the city, great for under 30yr, Singles, professionals. Library, parks, schools are however overcrowded.

"Busy"

I lived in South Yarra for a period when I first relocated to Melbourne from Perth. It really is a great location to stay if you have just settled into Melbourne and are looking for a convenient location that's in the thick of things. South Yarra, off course has a few famous shopping streets, is close to the botanical gardens, yarra river and the beach. It is also only 4km from the city.

The only things I would say are negative about South Yarra are:
- at times I felt a bit claustrophobic - i guess being in the thick of things has its drawbacks, however this is probably just a personal preference plus I was living off Toorak Rd at the time.
- There's no real sense of community and people can be quite pretentious
- Pollution along Toorak Rd from all the cars can be quite bad at times - we had to continuously clean soot off our window sills.
- Theres a ton of apartments popping up that feel more like hotels than they do places you can call home.

"Good if you like plenty of activity and buzz"

I lived in SY for a few years in my thirties. It was exciting, convenient and great if you like to be in the thick of the action. Close access to the city, beach, shops and Prahran Market are some of the many advantages. There are great places to walk around too.

There are a few downsides - many people race their cars everywhere; there are drunks often lurking around; parking is crazy, and it doesn't feel homely.

Having lived in the suburbs for a while, I don't regret moving on.

Great for

  • All kind of retail shops Big W, woolwoth , coles, safeway etc
  • Cafe & Restaurant, shops, public transport
  • Walking distance to major Melbourne attractions

Not great for

  • Quite busy
  • Expensive to rent
  • Traffic and parking
  • No community

"Good for go getters and professionals- wouldn't want to raise a family here."

Having moved to Melbourne from Hobart, South Yarra was our choice of suburb because of safety and the wealthy pleasant atmosphere.
It has been a very convenient suburb to live in for the past year, as we have not had to travel out of the suburb to buy anything (Chapel street is great for clothes shopping too!).
There isn't much of a community vibe, as everyone is busy doing their own thing. Mostly wealthy middle aged and young adults, well-groomed professionals. Many apartment blocks and new development happening constantly. It's a common site to see Lamborghini and Ferraris doing chap laps around the main road. Good restaurants and a lot of cafes around the place (Verve Spice is great little brunch spot!) Lots of funky bars and fast paced takeaways.
Good for people wanting an inner-city apartment style life.
HOWEVER,
Very very expensive. Expect to be paying $450minimum per week for anything with two bedrooms.
Additionally, the fast pace and self-absorbed atmosphere can get tiring after a while especially if you aren't one to be particularly focused on materialistic things or are raising a young family.

Great for

  • Caulfield and Clayton train station line - frequent trains
  • Modern suburb with celebrity appearances
  • All kind of retail shops Big W, woolwoth , coles, safeway etc
  • Cafe & Restaurant, shops, public transport
  • Movies, Spa, Gym, Medical, schools
  • Nice Apartments.
  • Walking distance to major Melbourne attractions

Not great for

  • Expensive to rent
  • No community
  • Quite busy
  • Traffic and parking

"South Yarra- A great centralised suburb with everything to offer"

South Yarra is a great suburb that is perfectly situated just out of the CBD. In a way it offers the neighbourhood environment that outer suburbs do, but it also allows you to be in a great proximity to things going on and central to whatever you need. With public transport in abundance with train stations and trams servicing all areas it is easy to get to. Driving around here can be a challenge though so it is to be avoided. There are great parks, including the botanical gardens and suits young and older couples with dogs- I would strongly recommend it.

Great for

  • Great parks and gardens
  • Public transport is available
  • Close proximity to city with great neighbourhood living
  • All kind of retail shops Big W, woolwoth , coles, safeway etc
  • Cafe & Restaurant, shops, public transport
  • Movies, Spa, Gym, Medical, schools
  • Nice Apartments.

"I Love South Yarra"

And who wouldn't love living in the center of Melbourne's best shopping, best restaurants, best night life and entertainment.
From here you can walk to some of Melbourne's finest spots, the Yarra River, the Botanical Gardens, fed Square, the city, Southbank and more. Dine on street, people watch, enjoy fashion, glamour and style all day, every day, all year round.
I have lived in South Yarra for most of my life, and although have moved away, have always returned.
Best Melbourne city ever :-)

"Stylish lifestyle location"

Shopping’s the name of the game in South Yarra, where Chapel Street reigns supreme. The fashion strip contains all manner of high-end designer boutiques, chain-stores, hipster hang-outs, cinemas and gift shops. There’s also a seemingly unlimited array of cafes and restaurants to help revive weary shoppers by day, and bars and clubs to keep the buzz going at night.
Naturally then, South Yarra attracts the young, hip and fashion conscious, at least on its main strip and the streets immediately surrounding. The residents are a mix of young professionals, families and empty nesters – all attracted to this salubrious suburb’s easy proximity to the city by road, rail and tramline.
The architecture is dotted with terraces and houses which reflect their Victorian heritage, and chic new apartment blocks like those which clutter Chapel Street beyond Toorak Road. But South Yarra generally wears its affluence on its sleeve, and a great majority of homes have been well maintained or renovated.
Fast Fact: South Yarra’s not all about material pleasures. The fabulously restful Fawkner Park and Royal Botanic Gardens, provide residents with exquisite locales to stretch their legs or take some time out with a lake-side picnic.

"An awesome place to live!"

I have lived in South Yarra for around 7 years now, its been perfect. Its best suited for ages 18-55, with plenty of bars and clubs for Gen Y's, and excellent restaurants, cafe's and cinemas for all. Its very vibrant and lots of activity and buzz all the time.

Really good access to public transport, with trains, trams and busses at a short distance from any location in the suburb. Also plenty of taxi's on Chapel St and Toorak Rd. About 5 mins to the City.

Probably not suited for retirees and introverts, but anyone else, its a must!

"Exciting Affluent Lifestyle"

As an Investor:
As a property buyers agent at Capital Property Advisory specialising in property investing for large portfolio holders, we have seen immense growth and recommend certain style properties in carefully selected streets to astute investors. South Yarra is a well known affluent suburb which always outperforms the averages.

As an Owner Occupier:
South Yarra is located 4km south-east from Melbourne's central business district and is home to some of Melbourne’s most prestigious residential addresses.

South Yarra has many attractions such as the trendy up market Chapel Street shopping strip where you will find an array of cafes, restaurants, high quality fashion stores, highly regarded hairdressers, beauty parlors and much more.

A major South Yarra landmark is The Jam Factory which was old factories converted to a shopping centre and cinemas.

This leafy location appeals to families, couples, singles and students and has fantastic transport facilities byway of train and trams.

The area is also surrounded by high regard schools such as Melbourne High School, Melbourne Girls Grammar, Christ Church Grammar School, South Yarra Primary School and Swinburne University.

I would rate South Yarra in the top 10 places to live in Melbourne of all people looking for an affluent exciting lifestyle.

"Great place with one exception"

Really convenient place with great transport, food shopping and close to city and gardens..only negatve to living around Sth Yarra /Prahran /Windsor is that with the ever growing Night Clubs etc opening in the area that it can and is unsafe at night and some very strange people wandering around in the early morning...they are usually not residents of these areas !! If you can cope with that its otherwise a good area ..

"Exclusive cosmopolitan living next door to Melbourne's CBD"

South Yarra is one of THE suburbs to live in. It is a prestigious address with a number of top dollar properties. However there are also quite a few well-priced rental options in neatly maintained townhouses and apartment blocks, so living here at an affordable price just might be possible.

The best thing about South Yarra for the young and trendy is the super-stylish Chapel Street. Lined with shops, cafes and bars, it is perfect for cosmpolitan living. Meet your girlfriends here for a long lunch and spot of shopping - you will love it!

South Yarra is in a very convenient locations, just minutes to the CBD by tram or a comfortable 30 minute walk.

Prahran market is the place for new and exotic foods. No matter who you are, you will find some new fruit, vege, deli or even a tea.... I have been to this new tea shop in the market called "Tea Culture", wow!!! they have the largest loose leaf tea collection ever. ( sorry I love tea..).

Seriously, food lovers should check Prahran Market out, one trader sells only Mushrooms and another one sells only potetos..
