"Australian dream"

It feels like home and it is very walkable. It feels like an island but with public transport and Indooroopilly shopping close by.
It is a quiet place and you still get your 1$ coffee.
It feels expensive and it is! Morley Street, Longman terrace, Sutton and Laurel Ave reaching easy 5+mio$ for river front.

"Idyllic Family Lifestyle"

Encased by the Brisbane river on three sides, Chelmer is a suburb known for its grand homes and picturesque, Laurel tree lined streets. Presenting an idyllic family lifestyle whilst being only 7km from the Brisbane CBD, Chelmer is the pinnacle of easy suburban living.

With its own train station, Chelmer is afforded easy and direct access to the city and the rest of Brisbane. It is connected to Indooroopilly by the Heritage listed Walter Taylor Bridge.

Chelmer is home to a number of parks, The Western Magpies Football Club, and is within close proximity to beautiful riverside walkways, local shops, cafes and restaurants, and popular public and private schools.

"Leafy suburb with plenty of parklands"

A lovely leafy suburb with residents who take pride in maintaining their properties. It is perfect if you want to be close to town, with great transport, but not in the city itself. A mix of old Queenslanders and new builds. Lots of green park spaces, sporting facilities including netball courts, and close to Graceville shops and shopping centre of Indooroopilly. Great walking and biking too. We are new to Brisbane and were instantly attracted to the area, and purchased here. Loving it.

"Great part of Brisbane"

Chelmer is a quiet, leafy suburb and is one of Brisbane’s most established and appealing riverside addresses. The ‘Blue Ribbon’ suburb known for its fine old Queenslanders and riverside breezes, was previously known as Oxley Point and Riverton and is now named after the Chelmer River in England.

Settlement of the area dates from the 1850s, with land used mainly for farming. Population was minimal until the 1870s, when the extension of the railway line from Ipswich saw growth start to take place. Whilst the majority of growth in the area happened in the 1930s as substantial developments were completed and access was improved.

Today, Chelmer is considered one of Brisbane’s premier suburbs. There is a real sense of community spirit throughout Chelmer, whether you live in a $300,000 house on Oxley Rd or a $6,000,000 riverside home on the famous Laurel Ave, the residents of Chelmer share a real sense of pride and passion rarely seen in other neighbourhoods.

Major features of the area include Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE (Chelmer Campus) - Milpera State School, Oxley Sailing Club and ample parks including Gordon Thomson Park, Taylor Bridge Reserve, Western Districts Sporting Club, Sherwood AFL Club and Faulkner Park.

Like all the suburbs in the Walter Taylor District, Chelmer’s public transport is first class with frequent bus services and railway station.

My Tip:

- Follow the Brisbane River and go for a ride/run/walk down the beautiful Laurel Ave and adjoining streets. Capturing the cool river breezes and viewing the large Camphour Laurels (some over 100 years old) that the street is named after, are a perfect way to start or wind down a day.
- Take the kids down to Oxley Sailing Club on Leybourne St for a fun day of sailing on the river. There are junior classes for the kids and races for the more experienced skippers

Great for

  • Beautiful leafy streets
  • Close to everything - rail, restaurants at Graceville, shopping at Indooroopilly
  • Friendly neighbourhood
