"Probably the best kept secret in Melbourne"

We lived in east Melbourne for 4 years and hands down is the best suburb you could be in Melbs. You’re surrounded by beautiful old heritage houses, wide tree lines streets and parks galore. Plenty of places to get coffee and a bite to eat, but the best part of East Melbourne is what is doesn’t have. Fancy a good eat? Richmond and Collingwood are just next door. Big night on the piss? Fitzroy is a $10 Uber ride away. You’re in the quietest part of the inner city but surrounded by everything else.

"The Most Expensive Suburb in Melbourne & for good reason"

On a $s per sqm basis no other Melbourne suburb is as expensive. However it’s arguably good value. Very Melbournesque - charming historic architecture, leafy, parks, wide streets but only a short stroll thru the beautiful Treasury Gardens or a quick tram ride to all that the CBD has to offer. Peaceful & quiet while walkable to the cool stuff - cafes, restaurants, bars, retail, galleries etc in Collingwood, Fitzroy, Richmond, Abbotsford. Oddly - for a city with such a great café culture – East Melbourne in my opinion lacks a compelling cafe. Football crowds can be a relatively minor issue in the southern section of the suburb. I recommend it to my clients based on both lifestyle & capital growth opportunity. Scott Hall Buyers Advocate

"Plentiful"

Plentiful of amenities within reach and walking leads you to almost everywhere. A great place for families and football fans. Property prices are a little on the steep side so plan your finances wisely if you wish to stay for good.

"East Melbourne"

A suburb favorite of mine.... We have a great property for lease in George St, East Melbourne at present. As a new tenant you would be able to enjoy being walking distance to Melbourne's major galleries, performance venues, city shopping and best foodie streets. It feels almost unfair to have all the fun-runs start nearby, the Moomba festival within sight, and Night Noodle Market sniffing distance away.

"Community Feel"

Having lived in East Melbourne for close to ten years now, I couldn't imagine for a moment moving back out to the suburbs, everything is here within walking distance, restaurants, theatres, supermarkets and more. The only downside is if you don't follow the football, then you will not enjoy the constant invasion of fans during football season and the public events when all access roads are closed (in and out of your driveway)

Great for

  • Beautiful old houses and charming quality feel
  • Walking distance to the city and other great localities
  • Wide leafy green streets and parklands

"What a great area and superb location"

I really love East Melbourne as it still has an old world charm, wide leafy green streets and large old houses full of character. My friends purchased a 3 storey townhouse here some years ago for $450K and now it's worth a million .. I only wish I followed in their footsteps because this area is just so lovely. It's full of parks and greenery and is a short walk to the city. I timed myself walking from my friends house in Albert St to Flinders St railway station and it takes 20 minutes. So there's no need to use any other transport other than walking if you so choose. If I had a spare million I too would move into East Melbourne, also you're close to some nice cafe's including Laurent, walking distance to Richmond, Collingwood and Fitzroy. It's expensive now to rent or own .. but if you can manage the costs then I would say East Melbourne is really it.

Great for

  • Walking distance to the city and other great localities
  • Wide leafy green streets and parklands
  • Beautiful old houses and charming quality feel

Not great for

  • It's expensive to buy and rent

"Great suburb ... not much going on ... very expensive ... but close to CBD."

Amazing ... a suburb so close to the CBD and there are freestanding houses and nearly no high rise buildings. No wonder we have a housing shortage when such suburbs exist so close to the CBD. Also no wonder when they get really expensive (buying is impossible ... renting is expensive).

It is not much going on in East Melbourne. It is very quiet. And good public transport gets you quick to the CBD. Walking could be faster as it is so close. No bike paths at all ... as nearly everywhere in Melbourne.

A lot of Parks and the MCG are nearby (a lot of traffic also in the side streets when the footy is on ... ).

No shops and no big supermarkets ... (except small IGA or 7eleven and local milk bars).

Houses are all very well maintained and the suburb has a lot of character.

"A brilliant location just on the edge of Melbourne's CBD"

East Melbourne is the suburb tucked in behind Melbourne's parklands and sporting arenas, including the MCB and Rod Laver Tennis Arena. It is just a casual stroll the CBD, or there are frequent trams if you need.

The streets of this suburb are lined with charming, heritage townhouses and larger homes, along with the occasional modern house. Some of the houses have sweeping views back across the parklands towards the CBD.

There are a number of hidden treasures in this area - some good wine shops, pastry stores and restaurants that are well off the tourist trail. Great for a quiet meal out, or to pick up an interesting bottle of red.

This area is very exclusive, so beware of the price tag!

"Tiny suburb with some big pluses"

The tiny little suburb of Jolimont is so close to the city making it very appealing for many. It is close to Richmond and often considered to be part of east Melbourne. As a result it has a lot of what Richmond and East Melbourne have to offer including access to some great nightspots and restaurants and cafes.
You can walk into the city from here without trouble, although if you're not a walker there are plenty of options with public transport.
If you like greenery it is just south of Fitzroy Gardens making it a great spot to get out for a walk in the park.
There are plenty of little shops close by but there are more, larger shops further afield and you always have the option of going into the city.
The MCG is right there so it can get busy and noisy at different times of the year. Watch out for grand final day and Boxing Day.
Probably best for young professionals and singles that want that proximity to the city.
