I'm guessing it was a brief visit & the nightlife wasn't there for you..... yes, the town could do with a little spruce up in a few areas, and there's not a lot of work for young people..... but there's a lot going for it.... the fabulous old character homes, the people are GENUINE & friendly, it's cheaper to live & relatively central to a whole lot of places worth visiting in this area......
Never been to Townsville then, mate?
I kid, I kid! Just poking some fun. Love you Townsville!
"Great place for family and retirement"
For what this place has to offer I believe it is undervalued in comparision to other towns. I moved here recently from Brisbane and have lived in gold coast and northen nsw prior and am now glad to call this place home... Sure it not like living in the city but the town offers alot for it's buck, it seems to be going through a transition from old to new and is trying to break out of old habits.
Maryborough has enough shopping and choice to get by comfortably however you may need to goto hervey bay from time to time to get certain things.. Fantastic primary schools our kids have been in city schools and hated it but since been here they have enjoyed going to school, the smaller schools seem to offer more 1 on 1.
I live in alice st which is a main street of Maryborough as it's suppose to be a busy street I hardly notice it maybe because I'm a city person but its quiet to us and peaceful in comparison to the rat race we are used to. If u haven't been here before have a drive around and have a look at some of the old qlders here, they ooze with character and a little of tlc can make them look amazing.
It has a large number of pubs hence why they have the largest pub crawl here once a year (it's like the regions big day out type event) there are currently 3 night clubs open on weekends biggest being the Cri which sometimes has known dj's and events, so there is a nightlife here just not massive like the city. Heaps of markets happen in the region, Maryborough every thursday closes a few streets in the heart of town to put on markets, events and live acts..
Parks are fantastic for the young kids heaps of things to keep them busy there whist mum and dad feed the ducks and swans. Not a lot for teenagers except maybe movie cinemas, skate park and sports. Just remember this isn't a city with glossy coatings it's a town with a great history, a big heart and friendly atmosphere. It really depends on what you want in a town but this really is a hidden treasure that ticked all the boxes for us..

thoroughly agree..... no, it's not a place for teenagers or young people looking for work...... but for families, business owners, retirees.....it's got a lot going for it.
We moved here from the Gold coast 5 months ago, bought a very old colonial Queenslander that we're renovating, & have settled into the local life with great ease!! We travel back down to the coast every few weeks to see family, which is an easy drive & is great for a few days getaway... but we really look forward to coming home!! The fresh produce at the markets each week is both very affordable & great value, which means we're eating healthy but cheaper than on the coast!! Yes, there's not a lot of shopping....but a trip to the bay is only 30 mins away....so thats like going a few klms in peak hour on the coast!!! ...... and there's no such thing here as traffic jams, road rage, huge busy roundabouts, parking problems etc!!! We love it......

"Could this be the ultimate retirement town???"
"Maryhole", as the young people affectionately call Maryborough, is a largish town 2.5 hours north of Brisbane. It is a mostly quiet, pub filled, sleepy place, with a mix of old and new. All the facilities are there and its a bit of a sleeper in terms of prices. Maryborough seems like a perfect place t retire...filled with lots of little shops, a large regional hospital, easy access to Hervey Bay and Fraser Island, the cheap entry costs are almost worth having a bit more of a next egg. Hervey Bay is ridiculously over prices, and in reality, is only about a 30min drive. The Tilt Train also stops at Maryborough, so visiting relatives anywhere up or down the coast is a quick trip.

"Clean, great accommodation, lovely deck, nice level block close to the city"
Maryborough is a historic town where a lot of its residence try to maintain the features of their houses and take pride in their city. It is well appointed with parks, schools and emergency services, Id recommend Maryborough to those who want to get away from the stress of a big cuty and yet want the amenities and good quality housing at a far more affordable price.

"Maryborough - Close to Hervey bay and Fraser Island"
Maryborough is situated north of Gympie and just three hours from Brisbane on the Fraser Coast. Situated on the Mary River, there is good boating and fishing. There are many historical buildings to see in the town and some great scenery inland. Maryborough is close to Hervey bay where there are great family beaches, whale watching and one of the closest boat and charter service area to Fraser Island. Maryborough offers excellent facilities including shopping centres, schools and medical care. There is plenty of accommodation available with home prices still very affordable for the average person with rental prices steady. Tourist accommodation is also plentiful with an abundance of caravan parks, motels and hotels.

"A town that reeks with history. It is an absolutely fascinating town."
There were two things that struck me quite strongly when I drove into Maryborough and they were the fact that it is an old style Australian city with the raised wooden houses and that it is so flat.
The reason being of course, is that it is up river from the river mouth of the Mary River which is prone to flooding.
Being in Maryborough is like stepping back in time. There are so many historic buildings and exceptionally wide streets that you almost expect to see the horse and cart coming towards you.
First settled in 1842 the town grew because it became a safe port and exported wool. In the following years Walkers turned it into a strong industrial town building large ships and a variety of other equipment used for industry up and down the coast of Australia.
Because of its background Maryborough is steeped in family history. It is a very close knit town.
Maryborough supports a large farming area and the services it offers are vital to the survival of the area.
From the mouth of the Mary River you can go out into the protected waters behind Fraser Island - great for fishing.

Its reeks of something, thats for sure....
Lived here for a while now, no jobs, druggies EVERYWHERE, a friend of mine got mugged a few days ago in broad daylight at Bunnings, i was abused a few weeks ago for not giving a guy with tatts allover his face a smoke, i dont smoke...bussiness are closing, empty shop everywhere, houses get broken in to daily, i dont feel safe here with my kids, i definitely wouldnt recommend an elderly person to retire here. Sure the old buildings and musiums are great ( but once you've seen them once there's nothing else). Stay for the day but recommend moving on.
Druggies are every where why are they so bad here just asking thinking of moving over from wa and it looks beautiful
well that was real helpful....not
