There are planes - but if there were none, Stanmore would be much much more expensive (let's hope they sort out the airport!). It has the best of both worlds, a sleepy country town feel in the villiage, but walking distance to Newtown and Leichhardt for dinner/shopping/live entertainment/theatre. You have the excitement of urban living on your doorsteep without some of the hassles that go with it.

It is also close to some of the european hubs of Sydney (marrickville (greek), petersham (portugese), Leichhardt/Haberfield (Italian)) for good food!

It is very convenient - close to city with trains and buses servicing it.

It has choice of a public, catholic and private (boys) schools. It is walking distance to Fort Street High (selective public), Newington College, Newtown School of performing Arts and short train ride to the top inner west private schools as well as close to the city and eastern suburb schools.

It also is full of beautiful architecture (except for the odd apartment block ...). It is not all terraces either. There are plenty of freestanding Victorian and Federation houses on large (for the inner city) blocks.

Add in a park or 3 and it is a great place for families who think they would die if forced out to the suburbs.

Ive lived in Stanmore a few times over 20 years, I seem to gravitate back to the suburb.
It's full of old charming buildings, tree lined streets and some great cafes. If you want a little more action, you can walk to Newtown or short train ride to the city.
As anywhere in inner Sydney, there is a bit of traffic, but PT is great, and the planes can be noisy. Still, the community and charm more than makes up for it. Would be the best place I've ever lived!

If you’re after a suburb with great ‘walkability’, Stanmore fits the bill perfectly. My family has lived in Stanmore for a decade and we love the close-knit community. Schools here are fantastic and back lanes are buzzing with kids. We have great access to excellent dining options locally, along with fab cafes, bars and pubs. It’s a pretty suburb too, filled with beautiful Victorian architecture. All up Stanmore is a great inner-west option (and yes, even with our planes!)

Lived in Stanmore since 1986. Overall the suburb is great. I call it Adelaide of the Inner West mainly because its quite except for the plane noise. Beautiful architecture and nice wide tree lined streets that I would consider some of the best in Sydney.
I do have a concern about the impact of aircraft noise on the suburb but you have to live with that if you want all the other conveniences that the suburb has to offer. Lets face it they will never close Sydney Airport but we all know it should not be there.
Have considered moving on a number of occasions but unfortunately most suburbs now have aircraft noise as well as other issues like ugly apartment blocks, busy roads or simply bad architecture.

I've been living here in Stanmore for a few months. This suburb is right under the flight path. Flights are non-stop coming within seconds of each other almost all day - we even have to pause whatever we are watching on TV or can't even have a normal conversation with my partner when the flight is passing because it is impossible to hear! Just UNBEARABLE! I usually can sleep through any noises but this plane noise is just too much to handle and it started to affect my sleep!

There is only one IGA where offers not-so-fresh products. One time I bought a pack of minced pork and found out it was frozen when I got home! Staff are usually not friendly - I get that it is the only supermarket in the suburb and it gets busy sometimes, but they just seem annoyed by customers all the time.

Also, there are only a few shops and cafes near the train station on the main road - it is just so boring and the cafes are genuinely overpriced.

I would recommend to avoid this suburb just because of the plane noise!

I’ve been living in Stanmore on Clarendon Rd for the past five months and (thank god) only have about a month left on my lease; which my partner & I are spending staying with friends elsewhere.
I cannot believe that in a country that prides itself on maintaining a high standard of living such a busy flight path can legally operate directly over this suburb. It's unbelievably invasive despite double glazing on windows.
I’ve have had the worst sleep of my life these past five months, with the flight curfew kicking in at 11pm and typically ending with a roar at 6am. Air traffic ebbs & flows day by day, but this has generally meant extreme difficulty getting an ‘early night’, attempting a daytime nap to catch up on a previous bad night of sleep or, god forbid, sleeping–in. It’s often been torturous. I’m gobsmacked that people can live in this suburb long–term and even raise kids here. On the worst/busiest days we’ve had flights passing overhead almost every minute for hours on end.

I would advise extreme caution to anyone considering moving here, especially if you’re a sensitive sleeper. My partner typically sleeps like a log, through anything, and even he’s desperate to get out.

This suburb is relatively small compared to Newtown thus it lacks amenities. It is littered with graffiti and buildings that could do with a makeover.

Well let me start with some positives:
1. Quiet (except for the planes), green leafy and wide streets. When you compare it to its neighbour suburbs like Newtown, Leichhardt and Annandale .... Stanmore is a clear winner for its great family feel suburb.
2. It's got a train station and it's 13 minutes in train from city. 10 minute drive to city over weekends.
3. Close to airport and every happening inner west suburb.
4. Lovely family neighbourhood.
5. Great schools, child care and hospital
6. The historic look and feel is intact with minimum or no apartment blocks.
7. Once the second airport is operational, you can expect a serious capital growth in this area.

Some negatives:
1. Planes, if there were none prices would be higher by 20%......
2. A little more commercial shops would add to the glamour and feel of the suburb

It has a real sense of the past as you walk the streets and realize how much has been preserved from the developers keen sense of how to make a buck. There are great streetscapes especially around Cardigan and Stafford Streets. Check out the little gardens along the gutters of Ravenue Lane near Cardigan Street where pride in making the lanes more attractive is taking hold. The lanes are great for a wander where some old dunnies can still be seen.

shouldn't be at top 5 in NSW, too much suburbs have better conditions than Stanmore
