What is it like commuting to the city from Upwey on public transport?

e.g. are the trains reliable, frequent, are the express trains good or just get stuck behind stop-all-stations trains?
The train timetables show it's about an hour on the train, but past experience on other lines is that's the best case :-)

Yarra Ranges council scum have just made most of the parking at Upwey 4hrs max in a bid to raise revenue (over and above the $2500 rates we pay every year!) so there's hardly any all day parking left if you wish to catch the train from Upwey.

There is still all day parking on Burwood Highway both sides. Past the bus stop and before the lights on the Upwey side and outside the Sherbrooke Community Centre on the other side. Don't think there are restrictions there.

I'd agree - the commute to the city loop is generally around 45-50min from Upwey. I find the trains pretty reliable on the whole. The reliability on the line is generally around 98% or so but we do remember the bad experiences more.
As above, there are more trains from Upper ferntree gully and much more parking there also. Upwey wax on the previous govts list of stations to be upgraded to a premium station but this was shelved. But it is becoming a very popular suburb so wouldn't be surprised to see it upgraded in the next few years.

Hi there,
I moved to the area around 12 months ago. After some horrendous experiences at Upwey, I now drive to Upper Ferntree Gully and commute into the city from there. Reasons being:

1. UFG is a manned station, so when there are train cancellations / delays / suspensions - you actually know what's going on.
2. Quite a few trains depart UFG in the morning (the 7:55am is a personal fave)
3. Often if the train is late outbound it terminates at UFG - commuters aren't advised until the train is at the station - its really annoying

The morning commute isn't too bad at all - when things are running, it really is about 45min commute. If you commute directly to the city, I would recommend the express trains that don't stop at Surrey Hills.

The afternoon commute outbound is much worse … the congestion via the loop and the fact that the express trains stop at Camberwell / Surrey Hills stations adds most days at least 10min to the journey.

Usually, when there are delays it ends up being a suspension.. always check Metro trains website..

if you work long hours, brace yourself - its not easy.

Hope that helps
