Thomastown

"It's a ghetto."

Thomastown is a ghetto. A dangerous place to live. Noisy. High crime. Unresponsive police and public officials. Hoon drivers and drug dealing teenagers are all over the place at all hours of the day. You'll face frequent abuse from teenagers and your property is likely to be damaged or stolen when you get home.
Shopkeepers and local traders are rude, unhelpful and will rip you off in a second. Terrible racism towards new 'asian/african' immigrants, predominantly from older 'european' immigrants and thier children. Public transport is unsafe and filthy. Local library has more foreign language books than english. Local sporting facilities are always vandalised and damaged, as a result of local teens. Children's playgrounds and parks have more broken bear bottles and syringes than play equipment.
The Kebab shop used to be the only good thing in Thomastown, but the new owners ruined that too.

What a load of boloney! Thomastown is NOT a ghetto and it is certainly NOT a a dangerous place to live. I should now, I've lived there for over 30 years. Based on 2008/09 Victoria Police Crime Statistics and ABS Census data for number of occupied households, Thomastown doesn't event make the Top 40 list of high crime suburbs in Melbourne. In fact, it has a relatively low burglary rate. As for public transport and public libraries, they are run by Local Council and State Government and not by local residents. The same service applies to all the surrounding regions. Whittlesea Council is recognised as one of the best in the country. Look it up!

Reservoir is a very safe suburb. I have lived there for 10 years and love it. I feel safer there then anywhere else.
For whoever said that it is a ghetto. I say get your facts straight

haha... crime statistics. The are several reasons why the "statistics" don't show the reals problems of Thomastown. Firstly, very few of the residents speak english enough to report the crimes that occur. I know this first hand from when I lived in Thomastown, at least three families on my street, asked me to speak on their behalf when dealing with the police, because they were unable to do so.
Secondly, there are so many thugs, generations of them, that the residents are too intimidated to contact police about issues. Thirdly, the Epping police have ONE squad car that patrols the entire areas of South Morang, Mill Park, Epping, Lalor and Thomastown. Very difficult to catch the criminals, not to mention record the statistics for the crimes that go unreported or undetected by the police. I'll also add, that this ONE car was frequently called away to deal with domestic violence calls, and even when myself or neighbours called '000' (frequently I might add) police were often unable to attend due to a backlog of calls.

I worked closely with the Epping police with the many issues that took place in Thomastown, those higher up were very helpful, but the cops on the street were useless. Many were racist towards my neighbours, instead harrassing them for making the call in the first place, and they were powerless against the teenage hoons in the area who would taunt them as they drove past.

An interesting note from the many discussions I had with the Epping Police, when talking about the troubles in our Thomastown street. They would frequently reply with, "It's Thomastown, what did you expect?" I think that says it all really.

CutiePie... Unlike yourself, I have my facts straight. I've written about Thomastown, not Reservoir. But I've lived in Reservoir too. I lived there for 3 years, and I never had an issue there. But there are good and bad spots in Reservoir. Unlike Thomastown though, at least I DID feel safe in Reservoir.

Well done Blaze, an accurate review

Dont believe crime statistics, often in poorer suburbs people are too scared to report crimes to the police, so the reports are not accurate

What a load of rubbish. I don't think there's more crime here than anywhere else and I've lived in 6 suburbs across the south east, east and now north. I've lived here 6 years and the area is generally quiet and getting better. There is the occasional hoon, the break ins and druggies like everywhere else. My biggest peeve is with the rentals where people don't look after their house and garden. I suspect this will change as more families buy here. It has excellent access to the city, the ring road as well as the airport and will get better with north east link access to the east. People are quiet and friendly., no dramas. House prices are very affordable. Don't really need much more than that!

"Absolute Hell!"

Couldn't get out of this Hoon Haven quick enough. Inconsiderate, noisy and abusive teens litter the street day and night. Dangerous hoon drivers frequent the street at all hours, drug dealing teenagers terrorise residents, their parents as inconsiderate and rude as their children. Noisy music is played at all hours, shaking walls. Graffitti and reckless vandalism is an often occurance, letterboxes smashed, fences kicked over, established trees destroyed, cars damaged, and litter left everywhere. Racism and public urination are a daily event. A scary, unpleasant place to live, avoid at all costs.
