Redbank Plains

"Deal Breakers Swanbank & The Smell"

Moving our young family to Redbank Plains was our opportunity to get our foot in the door and become home owners during the housing boom. Redbank Plains is quite a large suburb and some parts are definitely nicer than others.

Being a low socio-economic area the crime rate here is higher. If you're looking to move to Redbank Plains I suggest joining a community page on Facebook. You'll begin to notice reoccurring street names/areas that pop up when people are reporting crimes and it may give you a better idea on which areas to avoid. Also check the QPS Crime Map.

On community pages there have been multiple reports of women being harassed whilst walking/exercising, teenagers being mugged for their belongings & even attempted car jackings. The crimes here compared to other areas I've lived in are definitely more brazen and a lot more common. In saying that we live near the Edans Crossing Estate, our neighbours are lovely & told us they haven't had an issue with crime in the 6 years they've lived here.

A lot of people seem to think the solution to preventing crime is to get a couple of big dogs for their yards but then they don't adequately train, exercise or socialise their dogs. When those dogs manage to escape their yards which happens quite often that itself is a danger to the rest of the community.

There are plenty of walking paths, small parks, & green spaces in our estate. The park nearest to us does seem to always be littered with rubbish, random peices of clothing, broken glass etc which is a shame. I also avoid the more secluded walk ways on my own as I feel like I do need to exercise a higher level of caution and awareness living here.

The proximity to Springfield Orion is something we really value & there are some really wonderful parklands and facilities in surrounding areas for the community to enjoy including Robelle Domain, Orion Lagoon, Kholo Gardens, Queens Park & The Ipswich Library to name a few.

Now to what would have been our deal breakers if we had known...

Swanbank & the multiple smells that grace us here in Redbank Plains. Swanbank is an industrial estate located right next door to Redbank Plains which consists of multiple waste disposal sites. There is a revolting sulphur like odour that occasionally passes through the community. The issue is so bad the council have even created an Odour Abatement Taskforce to respond to the odour and the health concerns of the residents living in close proximity to Swanbank.

There is also a proposal to build an incinerator to burn waste which is causing a lot of stress and anger amongst the community. A lot of people are concerned for their own health & the health of their families.

A smell I've already experienced multiple times since moving here is compost. Although the smell itself isn't as outrageous as the sulphur odour I avoid going outside when it's present as it has an instant effect on my asthma & allergies.

If you're concerned about the odours my advice would be to research Swanbank, the odours plaguing the community & the incoming incinerator and make your own decisions on whether or not that would be a deal breaker for you.

For us it definitely would have been. It's not the crime rate or other issues that tend to plague lower socio-economic communities that have us looking to move sooner than expected, it's the smell & concerns for our young families health.

I do not think this comment describe Redbank plains . I have been living in this area for 1 year already . it is a nice Suburb a good value money Comparing another ones .I have not seen anything that you describe here We do biking with my kid at least 3 days a week , and I have not seen people try to steal our items or see serious assaults around . I have not smell even once the odour that you are talking about . in my own opinion Does matter where you live You can have bad or good experiencies. For example one work mate who lived in north side Brisbane Classified hight class Suburb have to save woman live because his husband was trying stub her My work-mate had to called the policed the guy end up Killed by the police . Also my own experience living in Annerley Classified as a good location one day at 1 pm a guy break our neighbor door and steal his jewels. It is all depends but again my own experience have been really good . But the way I suggest to visit redbank- plains Reserve recreation park. It is really Nice it has a good areas for kids .

I'm glad you're having a positive experience living here and I hope that the majority do. Crime happens everywhere that's obvious but it does happen more often in high crime areas such as Redbank Plains. One look at the QPS Crime Map will show you that. Just because you haven't experienced something personally doesn't mean that others haven't. Take one look at your community pages for the recent crimes mentioned. In regards to the smell there's a reason why the government has created an Odour Abatement Taskforce receiving over 4000 community complaints in 2020 alone. Others moving to the area may like to know this as I would have. One quick google search key words Redbank Plains Odour will show you that many have experienced the smell I'm referring to. I'm glad you haven't and hope it stays that way!

for the crime rates data depend how you analyzed it , because if you type Redbank plains and mount Gravatt and compare it, the result is that it is way more crime in mount Gravatt , the reason for that is population. The population in Redbank plains is higher than other suburbs in Ipswich . also depend which programs or polices activities are crossing . in my opinion police is working a lot in this area to clean that kind of bad reputation that this location has in the past even when I moved here a lot aussie friend suggested to do not move south Brisbane (Ipswich )or north Brisbane ( Redcliffe) . also is important to check when type in google crime rate check the date of the publication because on google there is a lot raw data that is not related to the current time .

Mate you're kidding yourself if you don' think there's an issue with the crime rate in Redbank Plains more so than other areas. Tell that to the woman who posted on the Redbank Plains Community Notice Board on the 04/10/2021 warning other women to be cautious after she was harassed by a male in his car as she was walking around the Recreational Reserve you recommend before. Or to the mother on the 03/10/2021 who posted about her daughter being mugged by a man who stole her phone as she was walking, CCTV image attached to her post... The list goes on, it's a real group feel free to join. The type of crimes and frequency in which they are reported is something I just don't see in other community pages I have been a part of. I'm not here to educate or enlighten you as an individual on what other members of your community are experiencing that you as a male who occasionally rides his bike a few times a week haven't experienced. This is a place for everyone to share their personal experiences/opinions regarding their suburb, not just for those who share the same opinion as you. If you don't agree with my review move on?

Mate I did not say That is not a crime issue in this suburb like any other Medium class suburb , I am just trying to show other people who read This kind of comments That this not a fabella like in Brazil this is normal medium class suburb where you may experience interactions with People that you do not want it .Of course if you do not want those interactions there is a better location , maybe Brookwater , chape hill , hope island , Kenmore . I do not want to spent my all salary just paying a mortgage or spent all my life to pay a house . easy equation better locations means more money to spent , anyways my all point here is someone read the comments, have another point view and if someone is looking to move here it is not that bad .

chris_h

Redbank Plains is not a medium class suburb it's a lower socio-economic suburb dealing with lower socio-economic issues as I mentioned above. You clearly have never lived in a medium class suburb if you think Redbank Plains is medium class.

Mate the more you comment on my review the more attention you're going to give it for the next viewer. If you're so against my opinion and people seeing it, go talk to yourself in the comments section of your own review, maybe that will bump yours up. Go enjoy the rest of your day, like I'm about to. Don't waste it on trying to be right on a website based on opinions.

No I don't think that... Like I said crime happens everywhere but it happens more frequently in high crime areas like Redbank Plains that's a given. You've lived in Australia for 10 years, I lived here for 30 years spending a decent amount of time in each area I've lived in... Whilst I'm grateful Redbank Plains allowed me to get my foot in the door and become a home owner I would have picked a different entry level suburb based purely on the issues surrounding Swanbank as mentioned in my review. It would have been a deal breaker for me & I wish someone would have mentioned it on this very page. The higher crime rate is a given in any affordable/entry level suburb that doesn't mean it's not worth mentioning. BYEEEEE...

I have lived in redbank plains since 1986. The area was beautifull with minimum size blocks at 1/2 an acre Plenty of bush only 800 meters from shanahan parade. Some roads were still dirt, there was plenty of wild life, kangaroos, dingoes, koalas.lizzards etc. try and find some now. Redbank plains is just a dumping ground for immigrants, blocks of land where there used to be one house now has 3 homes or more, Crime rate is unbelievable. not only is redbank plains effected, take a step further and have a look at bellbird park. Koalas used to live in our back yard. now your lucky to have a backyard. Bloody units everywhere which once were not allowed to be build. Think twice and ask people who have lived here to see the changes that are happening.

Hi just wanting to buy in the area of Edens in redbank plains and want to know if the smell issue is gone? I visited one of the houses and there was some smell coming in the bedrooms only but no where else. Is it the same smell you are taking about or the smell you are talking about is everywhere? Your prompt reply will be appreciated.
