Hunters Hill

"Nice place to live the quiet life."

I lived here a few years back only for four months or so. Very nice place, mostly flat and easy to walk around ,so compared to Neutral Bay, where I have also lived it is super quiet and easy to get around. And that includes driving. The downside is it is not all that visually exciting, yes there are some very nice houses, but nothing that blows you away like many other suburbs in Sydney. In a lot of ways it reminds me of some nice quiet suburbs in Brisbane. There is a definite lack of cafes and local stores, but it basically has what you need, and the stores and eateries it has are perfectly fine. I found Hunters Hill people to be mostly pleasant, well dressed, and reasonably friendly. There are a lot of thirty and forty something professionals. There is not a lot to do at night, but then again you would not move here for that. This suburb suits people who want a more quiet life, and a family / suburb feel. It is close enough to the city to be handy, and you can usually easily park your car on the street if you need to. Lots of nice tree lined streets.

Macgregor

"A wonderful little gem...lovely."

Having lived and rented around Brisbane for several years, Macgregor finally felt like home. Tucked away just 11 klms from the CBD, and with the recently renovated, massive, and now world class Garden City shopping center on your doorstep, (though you wouldn't know it) You have everything you could ever need. There are lovely parks, friendly people, and it is very safe, with super low crime. Neighboring suburbs are Mount Gravatt East, Sunnybank, and Holland Park. All lovely places. Like most suburbs it has some main roads close by, and Kessels and Mains road certainly do get busy, but its a small price to pay for living in these leafy quiet streets. great bus service to the city gets you there in ten minutes, and I can leave our driveway and be in the CBD with good traffic in 8 minutes. Nice spacious houses, big yards, and loads of nearby cafes and restaurants keep us very happy here. We simply do not plan on moving.

Great for

  • Quiet
  • Friendly
  • Lots of street parking

Not great for

  • The main roads can get quite busy

Neutral Bay

"Neutral Bay from an outsider..."

A visually gorgeous place, with all the convenience of every shop you could ever need on Military Road, and a great cafe by the wharf with quick access to Circular Quay, but there are quite a few negatives, house prices and rent prices are insane and simply not worth it. Most are dissected old mansions turned into apartments, and most of the buildings here despite being built so long ago are very close together, giving a very cramped and squeezed in effect. A lot of ' rat runner' - drivers...go zooming through this suburb to avoid busy traffic, making it super hard to cross any roads, and to rent or buy a truly free standing house in this area, (which there seem to be few of) well, you best be a multi millionaire. Going for a walk is super tough as this place is VERY steep and hilly. Credit where credit due though, it is a very pretty place. Coming from Hunters Hill originally, I was just used to much less noise, less hustle n bustle, and nice flat ground to stroll on. You best be sure to wrangle your own car park into the deal, as the streets totally fill up with parked cars by sundown, I usually had to park ten houses away from my place. This suburb has awesome views of the harbor from many places. Not bad but you can do better in Sydney for the dollars they want here.

Great for

  • Central, harbour side, transport , food

Not great for

  • Super steep hills mostly.
  • Bad traffic.
  • Built up, expensive, parking, crime, transient
  • Bad parking
  • Expensive
