Beeliar

"Beeliar- be lovely, be-quiet, be-mine"

I was disappointed to see a couple of scathing reviews, of what can only be described as sour grapes from recent posts of past sellers from Beeliar, who clearly wanted more for their home than it was actually worth.
I would like to clear up some facts about Beeliar. We have lived extremely happily in the estate for over three years and have watched the estate grow and prosper. It is probably one of the best kept secrets in the Southern Suburbs. It's close to the Freeway, Freo, the city and the sea. Yet far enough away to have the peace of the countryside. Firstly, it is a fantastic area to live in, quiet, tranquil, with gorgeous bush walks just seconds from your home. There is a vibrant community centre, with an active community group dedicated to promoting the area and developing a sense of belonging. The football pitches always have some great events or activities going on, as well as children's play areas. Having a toddler myself, I am happy to say we have near experienced wild roaming dogs or unruly behaviour!
With regards to the cement factory, let's put this issue to bed...Firstly, it was there before the estate, so why buy near it if you dont want to be next to it. Secondly studies in Beeliar have proven that the 'dust' actually came from the market farms opposite the estate, not the cement factory. The estates actually affected by the steam from the cement fatcory are South Yangebup, South Coogee, Coogee and predominantly Munster. Staying near the top of the estate, closest to the factory, you have a slight smell for about an hour sometimes on a Sunday, if the wind blows vaguely in your direction.
The area is a great investment as with the proposals for Port Coogee entertainment area and also Cockburn central being finalised, the property prices will start to significantly rise in the area.
People are friendly, and generally very pleasant, the shops 'which were boarded up' occurred once to my knowledge, which happens everywhere, Coogee, Freo, Subiaco, Perth, Vic Park, Claremont.
I suggest to any potential buyers out there interested in this area, that they come and see for themselves, what Beeliar is really like and don't be persuaded off by some bitter rants of disgruntled sellers who want to ruin the area for everyone else. Saturdays and Sundays are lovely here, the coffee shop is usually busy, the parks are full and many people are seen walking the streets with their children, without any fear of being bowled over by rabid dogs or mowed down by reckless hoons!
So, grumpy sellers, good riddance, to residents, congrats on keeping our little community here thriving and one of the best kept communities in the south! To potential new residents..welcome and enjoy!

For the record, we weren't grumpy sellers. We were renters, one of about six (or more) houses on our street. So, no sour grapes here. It didn't cost us anything to move out of the area.

First of all, everyone's experience is different. I would have liked to have known about the house break-ins, car vandalism, etc. before we moved in. We only found out after the fact when discussing it with our neighbors. Then it became, "Wow, you too?" One reported their house burgled. Another had his work vehicle broken into a week after he received it and had been parking it in front of his house. He eventually started parking it in our garage until he could sell one of his cars and make space in his own garage.

As for the other stuff...yes, dogs did knock over my kid on more than one occasion. No one's ever seen a bad owner, I take it? My husband had the same altercation with the people involved. There were witnesses to the motorbike incident.

Perspective residents can ask the owner of the IGA how many times it and the liquor store have been broken into. It is more than once. The playground near our house (we were just there last week) is still terrible. And I stand by the aluminum foiled windows and punching bags.

Honestly, prospective residents to an area can read all of the comments about a place and use them to make an informed decision about whether they want to buy or rent in that area. I would have liked for someone to tell us about the potential issues before our car was broken into and our property stolen. I would have liked to hear that a neighborhood is not all sunshine and rainbows.

The people who moved into our rental after us seem to be having a good time there. Neighbors say there's always five or six cars there a day, coming and going, When my husband went to pick up our mail, he noted the place has no furniture whatsoever and some strange characters answering the door. But hey, I bet they love it there.

I think perhaps you may have stayed next to some choice characters. Thankfully we have been here 3 years and have experienced none of the above. If you were so nhappy about renting here, I am surprised you still take the time to spoil other residents experiences or negate other positive experiences. We live at the top of the estate and the area is beautiful, quiet and has some spectacular views to the city and coast.
I note that you have failed at any time to comment on the positive aspects i discussed of the area, the reserve, the community and community centre, the fact that the local businesses in the estate are thriving. I have certainly not to let my children play near unattended dogs or witnessed wild dogs roaming free around the estate. As a dog owner myself, with a dog which remains on a leash on all occassions, your easiest solution would have been to contact the local dog warden or police, as opposed to causing an altercation.
I am not sure which playground you are referring to either, as the playground next to the pond and also at the top of the estate are both well maintained, and usually busy. I am sure parents would not be happy for their children to play on unsafe play areas. I can only question whether perhaps you were in a different area from us, as our experience of the meve estate is positive. I completely agree with you, prospective residents should chat to locals, and businesses and do their homework , as everyone should, before moving to a new area and hopefully not be swayed by anyone elses experience positive or negative. You are quite right, there is no area completely safe and smelling of flowers, however,i have to burst the bubble and say Beeliar is no different from anywhere else.
As for your unwelcome sarcasm towards the end of your comment, your obvious distaste for the area has left a bitter taste, but why ruin it for everyone else, move on , life is far too short.

Yes, I agree, it is far too short. And people should live in a place where they feel at home, safe, and at peace with. Unfortunately, for us, that was not Beeliar. It may be for other people, yourself included. However, I guess other points of view are not welcome. And other's experiences cannot be shared unless they are positive. What is the point of an open review forum then?

If you read my original review, you'll note that I did mention the community association, the events held in the oval, the proximity to Coogee Beach and to Freo. All positives to me. Not enough to counterbalance our negative experiences of the place for us, but they were welcome distractions during our time there.

As for the dog, I did not cause any altercation. I was protecting my child from a dog roaming off lead. I will not just stand by and allow a dog to run full speed at my toddler just to make sure the owner has no hard feelings about it. My responsibility is to my child first. For the record, it was not packs of dogs, but pets owned by the same couple. I could have called rangers, police, laid a formal complaint, but given the size of the man in question and that I was alone with a child, feeling intimidated, I did not feel safe telling him that I was calling the cops on him and he'd better hang around.

As for bitterness, I don't have any. My friends still live there. We visit regularly for dinners, BBQs, lovely evenings. They're the ones asking us to park our car in their garage when we're out in the evenings so that our vehicle is still safe after dark. Their work car was also broken into yet they still love Beeliar and are thinking of buying there. You are correct that no area is safe and smelling of flowers, and would also have its home invasions (like the Catspaw one in August) and P-plate hoons drag racing (like on Beeliar Drive in June) but I take it as a good sign that we haven't been burgled yet in our new neighborhood. That may change, no doubt. There is no utopia anywhere in Australia. Everyone needs to research, visit the area, and make the decision that is best for them. Everyone is different, thank goodness, or the world would be a pretty dull place.

I assume also that you are referring to my comments also regarding hoons etc let me put the record straight right away I still live here and I just think maybe you are wearing blinkers or really dark sunnies. Your name Feelgood gives me the impression that you have a very positive outcome on life, well done but some of us cannot pretend.
I can give you many instances to back my statements up with but it obviously would not of any use to someone who cannot take critisism. I will ask the question again are you an estate agent/Land seller? I belive as said earlier Meve may improve with time, hope it is in my time.

People that are defending this suburb are just in denial and don't want to accept that its a mistake living there. Either that, or they are the same people that is ruining this suburb. For me these people were, Cockburn cement, Hooligan drivers, truckers who polluted the streets with their unsafe loads of construction materials.
so Which one are you?

None of the above @19212169, happy resident that understands that every suburb has rough citizens and minor problems, but if you spend your life with a cup half empty instead of half full, it will be impossible to make you see different. We love the proximity to the bush, the parks, close streets, lovely neighbors and the shops that are perfect for a coffee, physio appointment, chemist appointment, grocery pickup or GP appointment. Wishing you all the best in your future search for housing, but I won't stand by and let you rubbish my suburb which I put effort and care into improving the community where I can.
