"where every house looks the same"
Had to visit the fam in the area and decided to stick around for a few days. Now, while the beaches are nice, the vibe? Not so much. Every house looks like a copy-paste McMansion, complete with a Mercedes or a flashy Ute parked out front, alongside three jet skis for good measure. It’s like everyone got the same memo: “Let’s see who can out-McMansion the other.”
And don’t even get me started on the people. Not a single “hello” or friendly smile. It’s like I wandered into a contest of one-upmanship—who can flaunt the most? And good luck finding a decent bite to eat that doesn’t require a small loan. Every meal feels like an entry fee into the millionaire’s club, where everyone’s out to outspend each other.
Honestly, the whole place reeks of pretension and materialism, with zero community vibe. Thanks, but no thanks. If I wanted this, I’d just move to Brighton!
"Sublime"
Nestled along the picturesque coastline of New South Wales, Nambucca Heads is undoubtedly one of the most charming, quaint, and peaceful destinations you'll find. As soon as you arrive, the serenity of this hidden gem envelops you, making it feel like a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
The beauty of Nambucca Heads lies in its simplicity. The pristine beaches stretch out before you, offering lovely walks that are nothing short of sublime. The sound of the waves gently lapping against the shore creates a serene soundtrack to your day, while the stunning views are nothing short of breathtaking.
Words truly fall short when trying to capture the essence of Nambucca Heads. It’s a place where time seems to slow down, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the tranquil surroundings. The charm of this little town is simply beyond description; it must be experienced to be truly appreciated. Whether you're seeking solitude, natural beauty, or a peaceful retreat, Nambucca Heads is the perfect destination to unwind and rejuvenate.

"Good beach town with great view"
lovely buildings, and views , but real estate is just totally unaffordable, and on weekends is so over run with Sydney Tourists seems to spoil the area. Not sure about a retirement area unless you have won lotto, TWICE !
"AWFUL RUN DOWN, keep away !"
I visited here looking if it would be an ok place to retire, I never wanted to warp speed out of an area so fast, so many run down houses, looking like a war zone, so unsafe feeling with down and outs walking around the foreshore area , the whole place needs a major developer to re do 90% of the houses in the area, its just claustraphbic , over run with traffic and narrow bad roads, a poor old run down area that may have been good in 1950 but now feels like it needs to completely demolished.
"Great retirement town"
Been here a few times, now its at the top of my list of retirement places, lost of clubs medical facilities, and lovely walks by beaches and walks and places to drive to that are short drives, good shops too.
"A great sea change"
its in my top contenders for a retirement spot, I am not a boatie or into fishing, but its just quiet enough to feel safe, has a great foreshore area and great accessible beach, not too far from Hospital's, and locals are always friendly every time I come. Its a fair way from Melbourne, which is a good thing as it keeps the idiots away as its too quite for some, but has some of the best views in Victoria, some good eats, and great sea food. Good houses can be hard to find, and lots of holiday homes that are bit run down spoils it a bit , but way better than many of the coastal towns in NSW that are very run down. Best secret in Victoria
"Not my town for retirement"
I have come here many times in the past 15 years, however I have not been since 2017, I just visited in August 2024, and has it changed, so many shops closed, (thanks COVID), and the place seems to be suffering what so many towns along the coastlines are, run down, tired, and when you view areas from a retirement perspective, instead of just a holiday destination it becomes clear this is not a place I want to retire in, its too far away from medical facilities, it really has not much to do, and lots of bogans seems to have settled in, the place is dead most of the time , 60% of the accomodations are tourists places (which mind you are overpriced and run down). not my sort of place anymore, I wont be coming back again, its lost its once lovely charm
"Was Great, now spoiled by greedy council and developers"
Lived here for over 11 years, have watched what was a great little country town become another congested suburb, with no roads or infrastructure to support it. Too many people now, and too many new estates, thanks to the Greedy useless council that takes all the rates and does not do anything with it, some streets don't have gutters, the footpaths are not maintained and grass areas are left to die with no watering or maintenance. No hard waste collection, no real good walking tracks, the whole town is looking run down, tired, and needs a huge face lift and overhaul. No Jobs, so everyone works some where else. The houses are now just as expensive as everywhere else. Thank you council for allowing this town to be ruined. The locals are from the city and not friendly at all, neighbours won't talk to you, all the local tradies and mechanics are a rip off and are substandard , I tried to support them all over the past decade and each time got disappointed, now employ other from outside Bacchus Marsh. The roads are in terrible state, potholes, and cracks, not maintained at all. All the local eats are average at best and overpriced, You can get a good Pizza, but all the Chinese are terrible, not even the RSL does food, or can't even get a good cheap pub lunch meal !! unless you think $25.00 is cheap!?
I cant wait to move away, TOTALLY had enough of the area, need to find a real country town!
"A boaring little town full of stoners or retired people interesting in doing nothing"
Its like an old sea side town, untouched by developers, with no real views to speak of, and no vibe or soul. Some ok places to eat, and so ok walks on the beach , unless you like fishing or boating this is not a place to enjoy surf, night life, or views, it all feels a bit run down, old and boganny. Better places in Queensland to live.
So tell me; where would be the better places to live in Queensland?
Yeppoon, sunshine coast, gold coast, Mackay, just to name a few
No, you must have misheard me; I said 'better'..
I've lived near Yeppoon, have lived on the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast and worked in Mackay. You said HB was full of stoners and bogans - you think the places you mention aren't?
this is not a forum for back and forth, you like green I like blue, IMHO.. if you think different great, I am not going to have a discussion about it. Its simply my view. End of story.
I love Hervey Bay, but like most places it depends on the people who are around you that influence our opinions
I love Hervey Bay and at the moment it seems like so many other people do. The bay is booming. House prices have jumped, there are so many restaurants opening up, all kinds of keep fit, schools are doing well, hospital is expanding, esplanade looks great and in my experience when I am out most people say hello.
what a wonder full place to die, they are building the hervey bay hospice next to a crematorium hope fully the planning people will spend their last days looking at the smoke stack, my parents survived the 2nd world war have we learnt nothing this is how an incompentent local council treats the elderley
Being an outsider I am laughing at the negativity of some of you. Lets get things really clear - Hervey Bay is lovely and a growing regional town, it will NEVER be a thriving metropolis, so you either like or you dont. Helenm30- what has parents got to do with crematorium next to hospice and council??? I think it fantastic idea to develop a area for over 50s living, to independent, nursing, hospice and crematorium all in one - powered by natural gas. End to end from 50s to death.
Low cost housing and low priced rents = lower socioeconomic demographic people - no surprises here. Wake up and smell the roses otherwise stop complaining and enjoy or move back to where you came from. A lot of whinging Nancys on this page.
Wow seeing all these comments really is scary im thinking of moving to Harvey bay to point vernon but now not to sure can anyone thats living there right now give me some advice please
I'm looking forward to retiring in Hervey Bay in a few years. Got my land sorted in what I think will be an awesome place. I'm from down south and looking forward to the relaxed lifestyle you all portray as well as lots of vitamin D. After what we are experiencing down south at the moment, you guys are very lucky and fortunate to live in the paradise you live in. Want to swap?
Stuff happens everywhere, just have to embrace everything and let the crap flow by.
Looking forward to saying hi and if I'm ignored? Who cares.
Cheers from a future Queenslander ;) x
We are looking to move to Hervey Bay in the next 9 months after buying a house there. IMO, this is a place that is up and coming, you can already see nice houses being rebuilt replacing the old run down houses. The Council has a development plan for the growing population. The Sunshine Coast is now so expensive no doubt people will start looking farther north for affordable oceanside living. Hervey Bay is only going to get better and will become a bustling little town as the new restaurants/business start to open along the Esplanade. Every town has druggies, oldies and issues..........Hervey Bay is lovely in my opinion and can only get better and property will go up even more over the next few years. You can already see what's happening with property prices now.
What are the best suburbs to live in ?? We are considering moving up.
Absolutely agree!
