"Car got broken into whilst here, it isn't what it used to be."

My friend lives here so I visit quite often but it isn't what it used to be, crime has sky rocketed as of late

Based on the latest crime stats:

In 2024 in Willagee your chances of becoming a victim of a violent crime is 1 in 44 ((It used to be 1 in 200+) and just in contrast next door in Winthrop (same as other good suburbs) it is 1 in almost 300.

Yes WA has gone up in general all over, but it has spiked in some suburbs more than others.

Coolbellup

"Hidden gem close to everything"

I've been living here for close to 7 years now and neighbours are very welcoming as is everyone I meet here.

Never had any issues walking, parking the car on the street or anything.

Love the numerous parks around, seems any distance I walk there is a park within a couple of min walk, I love how green it is here.

  • Singles

Interesting as the stats for Coolbellup crime stats are off the charts

Motor Vehicle Theft: Sitting at 2,013 per 100kabout 40% above WA average and 94% higher than the national average. Roughly 90% of suburbs are safer.

As I posted to you in your reply before alisonc32, that can literally happen anywhere and EVERY suburb is up in Perth, since WA has the worst crime of any state when you take it into account as a whole (NT doesn't report theirs neither does TAS but NT was apparently worse but for crime map stats it makes WA look worse than it is)

Police attrition in recent years have been the worst I've noticed and has been reported on the news and said on here as well by other people, so that doesn't help matters but apparently the WA gov has recruited more police (not just for the increase in crime but because there was a lack before when people left it allowed crime to go up so we will see a sharp dip in retaliation as with other years)

As I posted above, Coolbellup isn't that bad at all, I've had friends and family park outside for years outside their houses here and never had an innocent.

We also walk around at all hours of the day or night and never felt unsafe.

Sounds like you were just unlucky.

I've had friends move out of Coolbellup to South Perth (very well off area and street) and had zero issues in Coolbellup for 20 years and as soon as they've moved they've got their car broken into 5 times in 2 years.

There has been an increase in crime everywhere from the cost of living crisis, every single state and suburb.

WA has been hit the hardest so it isn't just Coolbellup, if you apply the same percentage it is pretty much even across the board.

Coolbellup isn't even in the top 10 or 15 or even 20 bad suburbs for crime in Perth. Especially for violent crime (which is what matters most for safety)

North Lakes

"Looks okay but read this review before making your decision."

I used to live in North Lakes from late 2016 - 18, just moved to Perth in Feb for university.

Positives: were we lived in one of the rare FTTP places lots of shops like Costco so has some convenience factor.

Negatives:

Most places in North Lakes have awful FTTN internet.
Lots of bogans everywhere. This is a huge downside coming from Sydney (unless you live out West or South West and are used to bogans) stay clear. All you hear is people insulting you if you don't drive a ford or holden near the pubs and teenagers doing burnouts all night.

The houses wow.... there is just no space in between them, they might as well be sold as Villa's or Townhouses (and a lot are but that's a different issue with huge traffic problems that are not or cannot be addressed) because they are joined at the wall either way. You hear EVERYTHING from not only your neighbours but people a few houses down and across the road because it is all boxed in.

Also beware, insurance DOES rate the North Lakes suburb as HIGH crime. (Check the NRMA crime map if you don't believe me)

Also traffic is a NIGHTMARE. I moved from Sydney (from Dee Why on the Northern Beaches) and thought traffic was bad there going into the city, just wow, be prepared to be shocked, I find it worse here. The problem is they have built everything to go along the highway through Chermside etc and it just comes to a standstill, four lanes of standstill traffic and the MAJOR issue is this seems to be almost all throughout the day. Even at lunch time it's just as bad, sometimes worse. It's like people cannot make up their minds when peak hour is.

The problem comes also from lack of public transport, so EVERYONE has to drive. You see the occasional bus, but that's it and they do not even have bus lanes, so almost just adds to the problem.

I feel like the place had potential and I loved it when I first moved here, but quickly found out the major flaws it had other than some convenience factor (like others have said) if you never leave the area.

suburbo

I agree. It is full of bogans. Just observe the local childcare centres and see who are dropping their offsprings. What they look like. That would be an accurate picture of the suburb.
