Tighes Hill

"Inner city Suburb on the mend"

First settled in the mid 19th Century the suburb has spent the last 50 years serving as cheap inner city accommodation for working class families and has gained a reputation along with its neighbours Islington and Mayfield as being one of the rougher suburbs in Newcastle.

Tighes Hill has now become a trendy inner suburb of the Newcastle inner city area with a large influx of young professionals and families looking to live an inner city lifestyle at the affordable end of town.

The northern extents of the suburb suffer from noise and dust problems associated with the coal rail line running between Tighes Hill and Mayfield however the southern areas are largely unaffected. Traffic noise can be an issue on the outskirts of the suburb due to the proximity of Maitland Road and Industrial Drive but the rest of the suburb is unaffected.

Large parks (two of which have off leash dog areas), playing fields, walking and cycling tracks are in ready supply, Newcastle Harbour is only a short walk away and walking to the cafe, pub and restaurant hub of Hamilton will take around 15 minutes. Tighes Hill has its own pub and bottle shop and Mayfield Woolworths is only 15 minutes walk away.

A great place for young singles and families alike values in Tighes Hill are sure to increase as the gentrification of the area continues.

Black Hill

"Bland Urban Sprawl"

A quiet, leafy, outer western suburb of Newcastle perfect for young families who like large blocks and room to move.

Now the bad;

- Being 20km from the Newcastle CBD expect a 30-40 minute peak hour drive to work of a morning for those working in or around the CBD.

- Public transport in the form of buses run to the Wallsend town centre however to travel to Newcastle CBD / Westfield Kotara / Charlestown Square by bus will take in excess of an hour.

- The nearest shopping centre is located in Maryland and is a 40min round trip on foot (or 2min drive) from the nearest point of Fletcher. Plans exist to construct a shopping centre on the outskirts of the Nikinbah Ridge estate in the future. Nearest Club/Pub or Restaurant involves similar travel times.

- As of 2010 there are no schools within any of the Fletcher subdivisions, so in order to get to school kids will either have to walk/ride on major 60km/h roads or travel by car/bus.

- The Maryland exchange is not ADSL2 enabled as of 2010 meaning slow internet speeds.
