Queenstown

"Queenstown - the hole of Tasmania"

Queenstown as a town is pretty to look at with a variety of shops and mostly friendly shop staff along with a few original locals, but it seems that Queenstowns cheap housing has brought the worst of Australians to the town and along with it all their problems. If you need tradesman work done you will pay the earth for a shoddy job if you can get anyone in the first place, if you need to buy building materials forget it unless you travel to Burnie or Hobart. The local cafes are doing a good job keeping Queenie going but it can be a trying and oppressive place, kids are arrogant and trail bikes can hoon past at 3am, some new locals think it is their right to help themselves to your belongings be it firewood or anything not locked away or bolted down, there is very little different class of people it all seems to be the low and lost class, tried it hated it, dont recommend it. Having said that the surrounding areas and lakes are beautiful and the place is steeped with history, great for a fly through visit but thats all.

Great for

  • Pretty surrounding areas

Not great for

  • Crime rate
  • Dirt bikes and burn outs
  • Isolation

Hi whoopsie, your comments are precisely what I'm worried about if I was to move to any of the small western towns.. Queenstown Rosebery or Zeehan.. but unfortunately they are the only places I can afford to buy a house & I really want to get out of the rental market. My question to you is, what date did u write this? It's Jan 2020. Also love feedback re Rosebery & Zeehan, crime rates, availability & cost of mechanic & tradies, and how is the internet reception in these areas on your mobile as well as on a computer please... anyone.. thanks in advance.

Hi Kym, I am in the same boat as you, as I want my own place and be mortgage free. I am willing to give it a go, and so is my daughter and her family!

Woodanilling

"woody or mosquitoville"

home to some of the baddest mosquitoes in australia, originally breed in woody they were released as a trial to torment and torture the locals, they succeeded in sending them mad and since then the madness has bred along with the mozzies, those who escaped have never been right since, take your chance if you dare.

"A small town - where everybody knows your name, your business and if they dont they will make it up!"

Manji is beautiful at first then the locals get under your skin! book your illness in advance as there is a 8wk waiting list for appointments at the drs. dont go to the pub on friday nights unless you like street brawls. do your homework on the shire first, very slack... choose your area to live carefully, if the house is cheap, there is a reason for it.

Great for

  • Beautiful big old trees
  • Easy access to other towns and sights in the SW

Not great for

  • Lots of drugs
  • Cannot get a family doctor
  • Noise from large trucks coming to and fro
  • Over 300 kms from Perth

Whoopsie, you provided a prety good balanced view with pros and cons and recommendations. There is one "Con" I discovered and could not believe it : illiteracy. I just cannot believe that in 2012, Australia has still many adults who cannot read and write very simple texts. This is absolutely a "red faced" matter for Australia as an advanced and rich country. Drugs are also pervasive in the community and I don't knnow why. This is a huge issue of concerns especially the range of people and age groups indulging and being addicted to illicit drugs.

Wilmot

""A small town - where everybody knows your name" and your business!"

Wilmot is one of the prettiest places in Tasmania, rolling hills and beautiful views all the way through. Locals are friendly enough if you want them to be or they will leave you alone its your choice. lots of native wild life on the roads especially early morning and evening so take care on the roads.
