Moving to Melbourne

Hi,

Hope someone can help here. My husband has got a job working in St Kilda and we are moving to Melbourne with two kids, one is school age, but have no idea what schools are good in the area.
We are looking at renting somewhere around Templestowe, Doncaster, Donvale.
Any ideas on public schools in this area and whether we are looking in the right place.
I want somewhere with parks and room for the boys to play, yet still be easy for hubby to get to and from work.
Any advice would be appreciated :)

Hi Kez11,

Firstly welcome to Melbourne - it's a great city for young families and no doubt you will settle in very easily.

There are lots of local voices community members based in the Doncaster, Templestowe area - so I'm sure there'll be lots of advice on great parks, and areas to enjoy.

There is a forum on best schools in Melbourne here http://localvoices.realestate.com.au/victoria/forums/best-school-in-melbourne

It might not have the exact information you are after, but ask the group for advice, I'm sure they'll help you!

Hi,

That is quiet a commute to St Kilda. You might prefer to stay Bayside area, especially if you like the beach. There are excellent public and private schools around Brighton and all the way down to Sandringham.
The St Kilda Botanic park is lovely, and I know there are few townhouses going up in that area. The tram is within walking distance, and goes towards Caulfield or the city, stopping around Southbank and up the centre.
St Kilda is great, but be careful there are some streets to stay away from...backpackers lodges and red light area.
Have a look at this website, it has useful links page, that is very good.

Hi Kez11,

I lived in Templestowe or 29 years, and know the area very very well. There are lots of parks in the Templestowe\Doncaster\Donvale area if that's what you are looking for, especially if you want your boys to have room to play, ride their bikes, kick the footy etc. The new Doncaster Shoppingtown re-opened about 18 months ago and is fantastic. The people are generally really nice in the area as well. The eastern freeway connects those suburbs to the city, so getting to and fro will be pretty easy if you have a car.

In terms of getting schooling information, the thread that AliceM pointed out will be your best bet. While there are a number of great primary schools in the area, the areas with the 'best schools' are considered to be Camberwell\Hawthorn\Kew area.

Getting to and from work in St Kilda might be a bit much from Templestowe\Doncaster\Donvale area as the train system isn't that great out there, but the buses are pretty good. It all depends on what you are used to. As I grew up in Templestowe, I didn't mind the 1 hour commute to the city to get to work.

Any other questions, please feel free to ask.

AJ
