Hi jemm,
First of all, fantastic choice with Melbourne. IMHO it's one of the very best cities to live in the world, and I've been to a lot of cities.
So I suppose to answer your question, we'd need a bit more information from you? Are you going to be renting? Buying? Want to live central? Near the beach? etc etc.
In the mean time, here are a few other threads which could help:

Good luck with the move! It can be daunting to change countries, but if you can it will be a great experience. I suggest make sure you have good rental references to assist you in landing a great place to live. There is a bit of a rental crisis in Melbourne, but the further out you go, the easier it gets! Great thing is There are nursing opportunities throughout Victoria and depending on how your job would depend on how close you need to be to the city, there are some fantastic areas along the "V-line" to the NSW border.

Good advice Beechworth, especially about the rental crisis. Prices in Melbourne are predicted to skyrocket.
Thanks for the help, micki has now got her nurse registration for victoria so we are now gearing up to getting things moving,we are going to be renting and would really like to be near the beach if we could.
As for being near the city we dont mind, it would be nice but it depends on how much the rentals are(if like here go up nearer u move to the city).
Main reason we are moving is we need more time as a family to do things together and get some life before our kids grow up and leave home believe me we are now both really excited Melbourne looks great I have a friend who is living out that way and he is helping me on the job front as he works for the railway as well.
Beechworth can you drop us a line as to where the good places on the V line are and point them out to us(my sense of direction is crap,I even get lost in me own house and it ain,t that big ) thanks to you both for the help and I will let you know how we get on no doubt i will be annoying you for more info anyway gotta go as we now have loads of stuff to sort out.
No worries Jemm,
You are correct, the closer to the city, the more expensive. In the city and near-by suburbs, you would be looking at around $450/week (low-end) and up for a 3bed house or apartment. In the nicer outer suburbs, maybe as low as $280/week and up. And country areas, can be as low as $150/week. I moved out of the city and into Beechworth, a delightful country town, because the we are only 30 mins to larger regional cities (Albury/Wondoga or Wangaratta) Close enough for employment and all the retail therepy you need, both major areas are on the V-line track. Indigo and Alpine shires are possibly the best lifestyles in Victoria, I think its beautiful, and close enough to everything. We have a young family and want our daughter to grow up in a nice and safe town. I like the areas of Beechworth, Bright, Myrtleford, Wangaratta, Wodonga. and surrounding areas, along the Great Alpine Rd. Some other great areas are along the Great Ocean Road, but for us, mountains near-by won us over, rather than the beaches :)
Also take a look at this map link http://www.victrip.com.au/themes/metlink/images/v_line_services.jpg That is the V-line, look in the north east, the 'Orange' section which is the "Seymour Line"
Hey jemm,
Any updates on the move? Would love to hear how it's all gone, and any pitfalls you might like to share!

Hey Jemm,
In answer to your questions about the Wii and PS3, I'm I'm no expert, but I've found this great thread on another site that seems to answer your question:

In regards to furniture and household stuff, if you are coming from the UK where the pound is pretty strong, then prices will most likely seem cheap to you (although if you will be earning Aussie dollars, then it will be relative to that). HOWEVER I have just moved into a new apartment and have had to furnish the place, and IKEA is my new best friend. You really can get amazing stuff there, and pretty cheap. Everyone (homeowners and renters) loves IKEA :)
