Buying around Warrawong

Hello lovely people,
My family and I are looking to relocate to the Illawarra and have been looking around Warrawong. I have been to the Plaza and had a drive around and it seems just like your average suburb. Would love to hear what thoughts you all have as we are from Sydney and so only know what we see during our visits.
Also wondering if there is any smell or extra grime from being close to the Steelworks?
