"Just moved to Adelaide - my view"

I moved to Adelaide just over a year ago. I moved from California, so you can see where my review is coming from.

I LOVE ADELAIDE. I have lived in big cities (San Fran, LA, and New York) my entire life. What I love about Adelaide is that it offers me all the comforts of big city living (top restaurants, impeccable education for my 13 year-old, nature trails, amazing nature like Adelaide Hills, Barossa, and the cleanest air in the world in Kangaroo Island!

I want to keep you my little secret, but stumbling on this site in the night, I need to just let it out.

  • Beautiful, clean, safe, and friendly suburb.

Looking for a home in Adelaide (CBD)?

24th April 2022

"Adelaide"

I love Adelaide. I just moved from the East Coast, not completely by choice and I am pleasantly surprised.
Adelaide has loads of green space, loads of running/walking/cycling paths and the traffic is quite good for a state capital.
Fringe Festival is amazing, no other way to describe it.

Loads of cafes, restaurants, pubs etc with loads of choice. The large migrant population means that the choice is amazing.

"Everything you need while still feeling neighbourly"

I moved down to Adelaide from Sydney. It's such a fantastic lifestyle in comparison. All the conveniences of living in the city centre with massively more affordable property and rental prices. People are also much more friendly; neighbours introduce themselves, cars stop to let you across the street even when there aren't any zebra crossings.

Central markets is such a delight, rundle mall is very cosmopolitan, and I feel safe walking around the CBD at any time of the day.

And there's just so much greenery, the parklands are moments away, every intersection seems to have a park, and there's also the botanical gardens.

There's so much great food!

There's free public transport in the city centre and tram links out to the beach!

And on top of all that TAFE and multiple universities are all just around the corner.

I really couldn't recommend it more.

"This is the place"

This is the place with a colourful night life. I have heard a lot of negativity within the district like drug addicts and gangsters but I have not encountered those personally (thankfully). Not recommended for families especially those with young children. Overall, a fun environment to get the most out of your spare time.

"A small city, beautiful in it's own right, but has a serious drug problem"

Many people constantly came up to me asking to purchase ice (methemphetamine). Adelaide sorta feels like a 1990s sitcom. It also feels like a giant country town with a small inner city. It's like Melbourne on valium. I don't really know how I feel about it. I don't think I'd come back there again for anything other than a festival. But until the drug problem is fixed I wouldn't recommend living here haha. But the women are beautiful. Lot's of great women in Adelaide

Rentals in Adelaide (CBD)

"A dangerous city"

I visit Adelaide often. A lovely city with the city surrounded by parklands. Avoid at night, particularly the CBD and Hutt Street as gangsters and drug addicts roam the streets, enter restaurants and intimidate patrons. Always lock your car when near the city at night.

"My City, Adelaide"

Having worked in the CBD for many years now I have learnt a few things about the CBD. I know most of the parking inspectors!! and when and where to leave for home without getting caught in the so called traffic.(25 minutes at worse)
East side or West side both offer great cafes, bars and clubs, shopping and all the things you need in city life. If I were to live in the CBD I would fins an apartment or house close to the Central Markets because that place is a just a real cosmopolitan feel. Hope on to a tram to commute around or walk amonst the city crowd. With some funky little watering holes opening up due to new liquor licencing changes Leigh street and Peel street are the places to be on a warm evening.
With the redevelopement of Adelaide Oval the city is a buzz and I personally cant wait for the new CBD

Great for

  • Easy to get around for a CBD
  • It isnt too busy
  • Cafes, clubs and pubs

Not great for

  • Parking Inspectors!!!
  • More developments both residential and commercial

"A great start to life in Australia"

I'm from the UK and came to live in Australia nearly two years ago and I think Adelaide is great. I work in the city centre - which is great for commuting. I catch the tram or drive in - and at lunch its great for any different type of food as well as a quick walk to enjoy the park for stress relief.

"Best City in the World"

Adelaide is a nearly perfect city. There are many beautiful parks. The public transportation is excellent. The shopping and the restaurants are fabulous. Great sporting venues. The beach is a 30 minute tram ride. The air is clean, the sky is blue and the people are friendly. I lived in Adelaide for a year, and I wish it could have been a life-time.

Adelaide is very beautiful city in the Australia. Adelaide is popular city in whole world. The city has preserved many of its original stone houses made by the original settlers as well as the more grand historic public buildings built during the Gold Rush years.

"Much quieter than you expect for city living"

You would expect living in the heart of Adelaide it would be noisy and you would pay too much for too little. Well it depends. If you are looking at apartments around Hindley Street and Rundle Street, it will be a little noisy. Although there are some great quiet little areas in the east end close to Rundle street. But row cottages and town houses to the south of the city are much quieter so you could be forgiven for thinking you are in the suburbs.
There are all the shops you could need close by, even a big hardware store a short walk away at Kent Town
There are plenty of pubs and clubs for a night out or a quiet beer in the beer gardens.
If you need to get out of the city you can catch the tram down to Glenelg or a bus anywhere else around Adelaide.
With parklands and gyms close by there are plenty of places get fit.
Living in the centre of Adelaide is perfect for young couples and professionals that work in the city.

"NIce clean air"

Adelaide has to be one of the least polluted cities in Australia with the city being only a fifteen to twenty minutes' drive from the airport. I was warned about peak hour traffic in Adelaide and I did experience some traffic on the way to the city from the airport. However, that was nothing compared to what you experience in Sydney.

The city is very neat and tidy and everything is within walking distance. You get your usual pubs, cafes and restaurants around the city. However, what amazed me was Chinatown in Adelaide. Over there, a handful of restaurants are opened till midnight on almost a daily basis! I had dinner at almost eleven at night and was surprised to see most of the restaurants filled with people.

The pace of life is definitely slower here as compared to Sydney. I recommend visiting Adelaide and it's surrounding wineries at least once this lifetime.

"A lovely city with an emphasis on food and wine"

Business is booming in Adelaide and the CBD has taken off with apartments rapidly being built and businesses growing.

Inner city living is quite a new thing in Adelaide, but is being embraced and the after hours facilities are developing rapidly. There are some fantastic inner city apartment blocks popping up, such as the luxurious apartments above David Jones on Rundle Mall and the brand new development on the north-western corner of Hindmarsh Square.

There are huge positives for opting to move to the heart of Adelaide. Obviously the commute to work is just a quick walk. The CBD is quite a small area, so there is no doubt you will be in your office within minutes and could return home for lunch. The CBD offers some great options for nightlife – lots of cafés on Rundle Street, a fantastic selection of cheap Asian eats in China town, and many pubs, bars and restaurants nestled away in the city streets such as the Wine Underground on Pirie Street, the Belgian Beer Bar on Ebenezer Place and the Apothecary on Hindley Street.

There is no shortage of shopping options either, with Rundle Mall on your doorstep. The Adelaide Central Market offers fantastic fresh produce and gourmet delights. Also a number of 7/11s have popped up around the city, so late night grocery shopping is an option.

The streets of the CBD are generally quite safe, although do take care at night time. Parking around the area is very difficult. Apartments of course offer parking, but it can be difficult for visitors to find a nearby spot to leave their car.

The great thing about Adelaide is the closeness of the surrounding suburbs. You can be in the café strips of North Adelaide (to the north), Unley (to the south) and Norwood (to the east) within minutes by public transport. Hop on a tram and you will be by the beach at Glenelg in half an hour, or you can be in the wine regions of one of Barossa Valley, Adelaide Hills or McLaren Vale in an hour by car.
