Reviews of Avondale Heights, VIC

"An okay suburb."

I grew up here and definitely have some good memories. And in terms of a suburb to live, it is definitely safe, and all the basic things - basic shops, a river which keeps it green, very basic public transport (a couple of buses), and a primary school, library etc.

But my experience is that it is a classic outer city suburb in that there is nothing much to do, no community, and so it is rather isolated. The lack of connected public transport exacerbates this as well. It used to take me 1.5 hours to get into the city as I preferred to catch PT so I could read. So that's 3 hours commuting per day. I now live at the end of a train line and it's actually faster for me to get into the city. Also, there has recently been more nursing homes put into the area. This is fine, but nursing homes tend to be made as isolated estates for some reason, which segregates the communities around them, as well as the people inside them.

Hopefully the disconnect will get better with time, I know some cafes have opened up recently as they realise the demand for good quality food and coffee is just as strong in the suburbs as it is in the CBD, and I know a community garden was created a few years ago, which is a great cheap communal space for people to meet each other. There are also a few free events at the library. It would also be great if the government did some long term planning and extended the 57 tram so that it entered Avondale Heights (and beyond).

The nature around the river needs to be protected a bit better as well. We used to swim in the Maribyrnong river but it is so polluted now from all the factories upstream that sat along the waters edge putting their run-off into the river. There are wallabies, turtles, and other animals that are disappearing.

"Best Suburb In Melbourne!"

Moving here was the best decision we made. Beautiful Canning Reserve, close to Highpoint, tram line into City just around the corner. Leafy green suburb, full of friendly people minus the pretention that other suburbs of this calibre seem to have!

"An underated and affordable haven so close to everything!"

As Sales Manager at Moonee Valley Real Estate on Military Road, Avondale Heights for the last 10 years, I have grown up in this fantastic area, attended St Martins primary school through to St Bernards College.

Being a proud Avondale Heights resident, I believe that the area is very much underated and has the potential to exercise plenty of growth whilst still being in a central location close to all amenities and not too far from the city.

With so many features to enjoy such as the Maribyrnong River and walking tracks, plenty of local parks and the arrival of new and exciting centres such as child care, fitness centres and the expansion of the Milleara Shopping Centre, this is a safe, family friendly suburb that everyone can enjoy!

"Best kept secret in the north/west!"

Occupying the south-western tip of Moonee Valley, Avondale Heights shares many similarities with its northern neighbour – East Keilor. Its diversity of architecture and landscape closely mirrors that of East Keilor with a predominance of 1960s brick-veneer homes on sizeable flat blocks, plus more recently developed pockets such as the popular St Bernards Estate which comprises some of the largest residences in the entire area. Two significant factors make this suburb unique – its proximity to the Maribyrnong River along with some of the best city views in Melbourne, and its closeness to Maribyrnong itself (via Canning Street) including trams and Highpoint Shopping Centre. Also popular with young families, Avondale Heights offers quality accommodation at a number of price-points – from unrenovated 1960s homes to grand residences with pools, tennis courts and million-dollar views. Given the large number of older homes on good-sized blocks, the area has long been of interest to developers creating multi-unit projects which appeal to first-home buyers and downsizers alike. Local amenities include three primary schools, bus services and local shopping centre on Milleara Road. With its East, South and Western borders along the Maribyrnong River, there’s also an abundance of parks, reserves, walking/cycling tracks and other recreational facilities local residence are able to utilize.

"Great area only 11 kms from city !!"

Look out for the booming property prices here as the older generation moves on (in a nice way)... especially near the Maribynong River. Predominately retired European community. Lots of scope to get it at groundish level for subdividers. Mostly huge blocks (around 650-750sq m). Needs a retail /cafe strip away from Military Rd...maybe Canning st
