Hi Jennifer,
Canberra is a safe place to live though it does have some trouble spots just like most other major cities.
When it comes to the best suburds, this all comes down to what you are looking for in a home.
If you like to live in a suburb with low maintenance yards then the newer areas of Gungahlin (like Jacka, Taylor and Moncreiff) are a good place to start as they offer modern homes on smaller blocks.
Larger block size more your liking? Head to the outer areas of the Beloconnen region as they offer larger homes though these homes may need a bit of TLC.
Preffer that inner city living feel, you cant go past the Inner North suburds of Turner and Braddon as they offer a range of new and older appartments close to all the city center.
