I think Cold Spring is like Carmel Hamlet, only better because there's more choice with shops and there's also the river. However, I think I prefer the restaurant choices in Carmel- the Carmel Diner is a favorite with my family, especially for breakfast.

One of my favorite features about the hamlet of Carmel is its sidewalks- unlike a lot of parts of Putnam County you need to have a car to get most places (especially since it doesn't have the best public transportation.) Other spots like Carmel include the Village of Brewster and 6D near Lake Mahopac. All of have shops and eateries and you don't need a car to get around.
