""Deception" Bay - don't be fooled by what you hear"

Deception Bay...the name and reputation is quite deceptive I must say.

After living in Deception Bay for over 20 years, I can say that I call this place home. I have lived in both Moreton Downs and North Ridge. Moreton Downs is quite a nice residential area with friendly neighbours that look out for one another, and North Ridge is similar to North Lakes - only BETTER...without the high price tag (I did live in North Lakes for about a year, but my neighbour was so close that I could hear them brush their teeth...)
I highly recommend the beautiful North Ridge Estate to live in as it has friendly neighbours, gorgeous homes, large yards, and plenty of space for any type of buyer to feel comfortable and at home. I can't forget to mention those beautiful neighbourhood peacocks that you can feed and interact with.

Pros:
Nestled right between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast - only around 40-50 minutes either way. 30 minutes to airport. Highly recommend Moreton Downs State School (primary) or if you don't mind a 15 minute school commute for the kids, I recommend North Lakes State College (absolutely superb school, teachers and education). Train link opening up close by in Kippa Ring. Facelift is being done to the local shopping centre. Gorgeous beachfront walk and dog beach. You come here to live and love a quiet beachside life, out of the hustle and bustle of anything further down south.

Cons:
I haven't heard the best about high schools in Deception Bay (I attended North Lakes State College year 8 onwards). Although there is some "riffraff" in the area, NEVER in my 20 years here experienced anything worse than someone leaving a McDonalds wrapper on my front lawn (maybe 3 times in 20 years). I have heard of some things happen, but there is crime everywhere (if I'm being honest). There is graffiti here and there, but I still feel as though Deception Bay is an up and coming area with masses of potential and future development that will rid these scallywags.

I am now at the age where I am looking at buying my first home. I am looking for a future family home/investment/project closer to the waterfront in Deception Bay as I believe it will BOOM in the years to come. I have experienced many, many seaside villages grow in demand, thus making house prices rise. Deception Bay is 10/15 minutes from North lakes (massively booming suburb with Costco, IKEA, K-Mart, Big W, Myer, Coles, Woolies, EVERYTHING), it is also very close to Newport (a canal residence near Scarborough/Redcliffe), I don't know if it has been completely ruled out, but I believe Deception Bay could possibly have canal developments in the future.

Who knows how long I could be here for, if it flourishes into the beautiful seaside village retreat it was always meant to be, I will gladly stay here and recommend it to anyone.

I hope I was able to share my insights, experiences and dreams for Deception Bay in hopes to also spread a positive outlook on this misunderstood village.

Great for

  • Close to redcliffe and north lakes

2nd time in Dbay in the last 20 years - I find the old description Depression Bay still relevant, Love or hate em you have no choice but to get woken up by one of the most awful sounds in nature every morning and you will have no choice put up with the crows insane crowing hours on end throughout the day then yeah sure if that's your thing then by all means come live in Dbay.

2nd February 2022

"The best place I’ve lived"

I lived there for a few years, I was living a great lifestyle, I loved it… never had an issue with crime or anything, I only wish I never left. I felt at peace living there but as a renter it was difficult, some streets were difficult to get used to with how close the houses were to each other and noise, but the better areas that are walking distance to the water seem hard to get, such a carefree relaxed lifestyle, felt like I was on holiday everyday and then there’s Redcliffe down the road which is such a bonus and Westfield around the corner, I have lived in many places since and it just can’t beat Dbay and Redcliffe. I only wish I could’ve bought a house there and lived there forever, now I’m stuck out in a place I don’t connect with, I feel like dbay is the ex I will never get over! I love you Dbay!!! Such a beautiful time in my life that will never be forgotten…

"Quaint town on the up!"

D Bay, for what its worth, is far better than its neighbour Beachmere. Deception Bay has a bad reputation, but that is definitely changing & thankfully it is changing because there is now shopping centres, restaurants, medical & a general upkeep of the lovely foreshore. Ok, so you can't really swim here, you'll go to Redcliffe or maybe Bribie, but for what is a lot cheaper than those places, Deception Bay is a beautiful compromise. There are kilometres of waterfront path & walkway, there's a couple of nice cafe's at Captain Cook Parade end,and all this only 10 mins to North Lakes westfield & 15 to Redcliffe.

Rentals in Deception Bay

"From an uber driver perspective..."

I am writing this review from an uber driver perspective. I have done more than 200 pick ups from this suburb and I should say, unfortunately I have many bad experiences with at least 20 percent of my pick ups. I really prefer to avoid some areas which are worse, most people want to bring their drinks in the car and some young people wants loud intolerable music. Most people are heavily drunk at night. I am sorry but this is my experience.

"Deception bay is brilliant."

Moved here 4 years ago to an area around Waroo Drive. I know all my immediate neighbours, their names, their dogs and their phone numbers. We have regular get together with movie nights and State of Origin games. During Covid, we lined our streets while one home played the Anzac service so we could all hear.
As with all suburbs, some parts are less lovely and have higher crime than other parts. Slowly this is turning around and becoming more well-rounded and I think this area will soon become a prime real estate opportunity.

"Don't believe the vocal few"

Moved here to renovate a house in Nov 2018. Lots of people bashed this suburb. It probably wasn't great a few years ago but we haven't had any problems. Ride bike to water, take dogs for a swim. Plenty of work, affordable housing (but not for long) and lovely quiet neighbors. All our neighbors are long term owners and love the area. As soon as this gem is exposed the less than desirables that are left won't be here any longer.

"Stunning bay views at Deception Bay"

We have lived at Deception Bay for over five years and it was the best move we’ve ever made. We have gotten to know the lovely waterfront community.. and their dogs and spend our days watching the sunrises, sunsets and the wildlife. No, we are not retirees we still work and the best part of the day is coming home to our piece of paradise. Yes it has pockets around of not so pleasant people but we’ve had that in most areas we’ve lived.. but as the price of housing and rent goes up.. and having just bought a waterfront property I can tell you it has, those less pleasant folk move on.. so I give our bay 5 stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟

"Great value with huge potential for growth"

Deception Bay is one of Brisbane’s best kept secrets. If you are looking for quiet bayside living with close proximity to all amenities then this is the place for you. All within a short drive you have the shopping of North Lakes 10 minutes, Brisbane CBD 40 minutes, Airport 30 minutes & the Sunshine Coast 45 minutes. Having just moved here recently I could not be happier with the region. We have great friendly neighbours who look out for each other. The waterfront is a quiet & relaxing place to walk along. While house prices here are still very affordable I see nothing but great potential for growth in Deception Bay so these prices won’t last forever.

"Best of both worlds - Bay and City Living"

Deception Bay is beautiful, a hidden gem. We wanted to live near the water and still be close to the city. We bought a beautiful house 12 months ago and fell in love with the area. Don’t believe the rumours and check it out for yourself. You will love it and it is still affordable with huge potential. Be quick as it won’t last forever.

"Great area -hidden gems"

I started looking at Redcliff 2 - 3 years ago then I discovered Deception Bay - nice area, affordable and decent houses with great mix of public and Catholic schools. Northlakes is only 5-10 mins drive with Westfield Shopping Centre. The Bruce Hwy ( free way) you can go to Brisbane city only take around 20 - 25 mins drive and 30 mins to airport.

"A Lot of House for Your $"

You get a lot of house for your $ here, and the water is close and the amenities of North Lakes are great.

You will get mixed reviews of the suburb because there is a mix of people living here, there are a lot of tradies, professionals are less than 9%.

Around 15 years ago, many couples left Brisbane suburbia to build in the new estate because land was very cheap, and they raised their families and formed a tight community, and are very proud of what they have achieved. Some living here have never lived in more affluent suburbs so don't know the very real difference. Some of the older area is run down and poor, and there is a lot of public housing.

Many of the houses facing the Bay and the tourist strip have been expensively renovated, this is a nice area, but a few streets away there is in extreme contrast of abject poverty.

People serving you at the shops, petrol station etc, are polite and everyone is nice enough, and there are a lot of proud bogans living here. If you have a university degree and/or have a professional or executive position, and are used to living in a more affluent suburb, then you will feel the odd one out at Deception Bay, unless you're thinking of breaking bad.

"Awesome location with everything needed close by!"

We have lived in Deception Bay for over 13 years now and find it a great place to live! We are in a great location with quick access to all of the infrastructure of Northlakes (including Costco & Bunnings) and easy access to the Bruce Highway! We have views of Moreton Bay, Bribie Island and Scarborough and get a beautiful breeze all year round! We have the friendliest neighbours that all look out for each other and have never had an issue with break in's or graffiti. I think that the location and proximity to Redcliffe & Northlakes alone makes it a great place to raise a family! Plenty of private and public schools are close by as well as the train station for transport to the CBD, which is used by my family members everyday. No complaints about living in Deception Bay here and I am proud to call myself a Deebayen!!!

Quite and relaxed over the weekends and never seems to be any trouble if anything a bit too quiet occasionally.

We bought near captain cook Parade so got great views of the bay and very affordable.

"Time"

Land is and was cheap and thus Deception Bay and surrounds caters for a demographic. With population rise and spread those on the lower socio-demographic [unemployed/unemployable/mental health/the unfortunate uneducated/drugs etc] get pushed out. The bottom line is they are not making any more land and they are not making any more land close to the water. Most older homes at Deception Bay are simply knock downs; so, time will change the nature of the beat; possibly sooner rather than later. It is still a very cheap suburb to buy into and just 26 minutes from the airport.

I have no idea what the above is talking about! Lived here for 1 year and a lovely place, think the mental health comment more related to the writer.

daveg6

I must agree with Jimm 18 on that one . I have lived in Deception Bay now for 13 years, it's a gem in the making.
It is most certanlly not perfect but tell me where is? The suburb has been over looked by council for years in favour of the Red Cliff Peninsula but the natural beauty of the water front is hard to overlook when its positioned so well.

My lil family of 4 moved from west Chermside (10 years living in that area and surrounding suburbs) and bought a house near zammit oval just over two years ago and never looked back. Had no problems what so ever. Have had our car stolen, burnt and house almost broken into @ Chermside and Boondall, havent experienced anything like that since moving to dbay. We also live at the end of a cul de sac and have about 5 neighbours around our fence line, have no issues with any of them. Deception bay is geographically larger than most suburbs, experiences might differ in each part. Only thing is our commute to work as both my husband and I work in toombul and Taigum. Thats the only complaint here.

big gorilla - the name gives a clue to the thinking behind this post, and would give a zero on the analogy. South East Queensland is a great part of the world; with Deception Bay a great location to access all the amenities such as beaches, schools, shops, parks etc with a lovely climate. Hoping that big gorilla takes his own advice and finds a home far far away from Deception Bay. I bough here 12 years ago, love the friendly neighborhood, walks along the bay have no doubt this hidden location will come to light and people will see beyond the rhetoric and negative percieved description of this great hidden location.

Ok wayne tell my why 99.9 per cent of the brisbane population shun deception bay and avoid the suburb like the plague. If deception bay is in such hot demand then why are there still properties for sale under $300k? Tell me why property values are stagnant in Deception Bay and tell me why people lose money when they sell their units in Deception Bay? where is the million dollar houses, show me the million dollar houses where are they? Be honest with yourself if deception bay is such a great place then why are there so many criminals living there stealing cars around brisbane and then dumping them in Deception Bay (seen it happen) and doing a runner. Why is there always a polair helicopter flying over the suburb every 2nd night? Hardly a comparison to Ashgrove is it? I make no apologies for pointing out the facts.

wayne-batistew

big gorilla; reading between the lines it seems you've had a loss in the property market and looking to shift the blame. As for stagnant prices; many areas across Australia have stalled and rating an area on price; really - are you saying Sydney or Melbourne is a better area to live than Brisbane? As for facts; 99.9% of Brisbane shun Deception Bay, try reading other reviews on this site.

big gorilla
big gorilla

I lost money in the property Market? When did that happen? That's news to me. The only reason why people say they like living in Deception Bay is because they didn't make the effort, chose they easy way out, the better than nothing option and just pretend they like the place because they can't admit they made a bad decision buying cheap garbage real estate among-st criminals and drug addicts now they have to grin and bear it. They easily get offended when someone tells them the truth about the suburb. They wouldn't spend the time saving the extra cash to buy somewhere better. it's all got to be "i want that right now" with only half the effort given. If you buy property in garbage suburbs then you have no one else to blame but yourself. Why anyone would think deception bay is a wonderful place seems ludicrous to me.

Big Gorilla, i am glad you don't live in dbay. I have lived in dbay for 7 years and the property prices have nearly doubled in that time, it is the safest suburb i have ever lived in, i have lived all over Australia. Millions and millions of dollars have been spent on infrastructure in the past few years, more and more businesses are moving into dbay, and there are many many properties over the million dollar mark in dbay.

"Hidden gem right on the water"

Love Deception Bay. Have just bought here (early 2017) and been living here for the last 4months while we do a renovation and have found the people to be friendly and helpful. The area where we are along the northern waterfront is quiet and quite frankly breathtaking. Love waking up in the morning to the gorgeous sunrise across Moreton Bay, enjoy watching the neighbour dogs being walked along the foreshore by their owners of an evening, there is wildlife galore and plenty of boating action to distract you over the weekend and during the week when the Newport yacht club conduct their sailing races. I have made the mistake of setting my office up in the upstairs sunroom in front of the big glass windows and find myself constantly pausing to take in the view. So hard to concentrate when you live in paradise. I am sure there are some areas of "The Bay" that are still questionable but they are becoming less and less as time goes on. My advice would be to come visit the area first and you will see what I mean. Then get in and buy soon, because the prices are starting to move up and will only continue to do so. Where else can you buy for so little so close to so many great amenities and so close to the city and airport (only 25mins I find). I shudder to think what the prices will be in 10years time along the foreshore.

"Family with 3 boys under 7"

DBay is a great place to raise small boys. We have numerous walk ways by the waterfront, plenty of spots to teach the kids how to fish, PCYC, a great library, kindergarten, schools (we like CTK), awesome parks and beaches + sand/mud flats at low tide which the kids love.
It is a real wonderland for kids to explore.
We love it. Property values are depressed because DBay does not have a major shopping centre development and in peak hour it's approx 90min to Brisbane CBD. However, it is only 10mins from Westfield's North Lakes, Bunnings, Cost Co etc and the local MKT Shop has a Woollies etc so all good really.
If you move for the life style you really can't go wrong.

"The best kept secret in south east Queensland"

It's interesting to read others perceptions of the bay and compare them to my own. What's apparent to me is its all about your personal situation and what you choose to do with your life.

Unemployment? Move where you can get a job - don't blame the suburb you live in.

We have lived in Deception Bay for 9 years and love it here. As professionals with three school aged children we find it perfect for our needs. Prior to moving to the Bay we had always lived within 10kms of the cbd in higher socioeconomic areas, we sold our home and relocated out here for lifestyle, and it's been great! We use the foreshore daily and can't believe how lucky we are to have it at our doorstep.

My advice to anyone looking at the area would be to do your research and come visit the waterfront on a nice day - people are friendly, and the degenerates are moving on because they can't afford the rents here anymore.

Five years from now Deception Bay will be the place people say they want to live.

Hi, looking to buy in the area but want to know the streets to avoid. Is there an area where most of the council houses are?

Happymidwife3

I can't recommend areas I really don't know well - The Bay is a big place! However, the waterfront area north of the library is lovely, and the acreage back blocks are great! I would suggest checking out the amount of rental properties in the area you are looking at, as well as the draft master plan the council has released. Some major rezoning in the plan will see definite changes over the coming years! Most of all - don't let the doom and gloom people away you , most of the reputation is from people that have never lived here and go on here say - best of luck with your search 😀

If you hate it so much why don't you make yourself happy and move somewhere else? I LOVE DECEPTION BAY. Myself, hubby, 4 yr old and 2 year old moved here last week. We couldn't be happier. Lived in Sydney for 9 years. Soooo expensive to buy so we moved to Perth. All we could afford in Perth (I don't want to go back to work until my kids start school) was a small 3 bed ground floor apartment with a tiny 91 Sqm fake grass garden (classed as huge in Perth) with heaps of neighbours able to look down into it and we were a 20 min drive to the beach. After 2 years in Perth I still could not fall in love with it and found it very far from anything, spread out and although we made great friends there, we just wanted a better lifestyle for our kids. For the same price tag as our apartment cost in Perth we now have 5 bedrooms on a 600 sqm block with a POOL and lovely kitchen, decking, garden with real grass, lovely bathroom, LUG for 2 cars and 3-4 more uncovered, a huge man shed, 2nd toilet, separate laundry, solar panels, water tank etc etc. Our kids Love the freedom and their new bikes. All our neighbours seem nice and quiet so far. Neighbours older Kids play on the safe street on bikes/skateboards/scooters. WE CAN WALK TO THE BEACH IN 6 mins!!! Play Park at the end of the road. 5 mins to shops, freeway etc. You would be crazy not to Live here with the low price tags in my opinion. Everything is so green and fresh. I love it. So glad we bought before everyone realises there are no other places so inexpensive for such a lovely place close to the Ocean. Everyone we have met so far have been so friendly and helpful and A huge thanks to Lydia at RayWhite for all your help and advice. :-) LIFE IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT!

Hi Geri. We're thinking of buying a house in DBay soon, north I think? Not from the the deception bay rd exit off the Bruce highway. Don't know much bout the area other than negative hearsay from a lot of people who don't live in the area. Just wondering what area of deception bay you live in?

loreng

Just moved to Deception Bay from Stafford (approx. 11km from Brisbane CBD) in March 2017. I absolutely love it here, very quiet, super friendly neighbours and so much close by (North Lakes, Motorway, Woolies etc.).
We moved in just behind Deception Bay Rd and even though we're right next to a main Rd, it's surprisingly quiet as the Rd is probably about 10m from our back fence. We're just down the Rd from the entrance to the motorway so it's very convenient. I guess we'd be on the edge of D-bay which is probably which it's so quiet. Also just down the road from a vet and Police Station.

After living in Stafford my whole life, it's a very welcome break from the busyness of being so close to the city. Also we had A LOT of crime in Stafford, more notably across the street from our old place so nothing will shock me here! Although I'm yet to see anything untoward. Overall I freaking love D-Bay!

I've owned houses on the Redcliffe Peninsula and Kippa-Ring and can honestly say since buying here 6 years ago I've never looked back!
For those whom like to rant on about the crime in "The Bay" yes, it has it's share like most areas but do your research, as in some areas of Redcliffe it is actually worse!
I bought close to the water and boat ramps about 100m , 1 km to the shopping centre (which is having a $20, 000.000 upgrade now! Café around the corner and now lots of younger working couples realizing a fantastic lifestyle for young families without the hefty price tag!.... no yet anyway!

"Beautiful Place, Getting better every year."

We bought a house here 4 years ago. Since we bought prices have bottomed out in Deception Bay leaving us about 40K out of pocket. For a place that is quiet, has friendly neighbours and is so close to the sea I cannot understand why the prices are down?? Anyway, its a great place to live, our neighbours have become our friends and we all look out for each other, when we first moved here there was some bad people living in our street but they have all moved out and the area has improved allot. We live 300m from the esplanade.

Great for

  • Close to redcliffe and north lakes
  • Close to water

  • Has rural and residenntial areas

Not great for

  • Average shopping in the bay

"NIce beachy town close to city :)"

Nice beachy town very close to city. Don't believe everything you hear about it, Come and stay for a while :) People are very friendly here and I feel safe walking around here at night. Great gym and basket ball and skateboard park next to the pcyc. Nice fields. Great library and nice little op shop next to the iga. Public transport is excellent. We live by the water and have excellent neighbours, Haven't had an issue with hooning or partying / loud noise. The local shopping centre is nice and has everything you need but yes could use a facelift. It could use a cinema I think. The surrounding cinemas are Kippa-Ring and Morayfield. I haven't had the need you use the schools as my kids are grown up but see a lot of kids going to deception bay high and primary. There is a flexible learning centre close and a couple of private schools in Rothwell and Burpengary. I personaly don't think it deserves the bad name it has, it is a nice place to live :)

Great for

  • Excellent public transport to city and sunshine coast
  • Heaps of varity of shops close by

Written by the local real estate agent no doubt.A young tasmanian couple are going back home and so am I,NSW>This place sucks if you are under 60.Retirees and single mums-make way for them.

MarkF

Seems Kataina has a "Tunnel Vision" approach with her comments and of those who actually live and invested in "The Bay". I am NOT an agent just a person that has bought here to live and myself and many others LOVE IT! You are entitled to your opinion and others to theirs!
If it's night life, being close to the city and transport at your door your after then YES the bay is not up there. But if you want a place to relax, stroll by the beach, and still close to shopping and bus and soon RAIL it has it all!.....suggest you spend MUCH MUCH more and go buy Chermside or Annerley !

Happymidwife3

I'd have to agree with Mark. ....If y Po u want the advantages of inner city living; then that's where you should live. The Bay doesn't deserve to be bagged because it doesn't meet the lifestyle options available to those seeking nightlife options. There are a lot of people living here that do the fit into the over 60 or single mum category who are very happy as well. I'm sorry your experience hasn't been happy for you, however I tend to think it may be your own unfortunate situation rather than the suburb. Best of luck with your move.

Moved from Far North Queensland to the bay. Purchased a rural block of old bay road. Quiet no traffic problems. Close to Burpengary shops, North lakes shops, Rothwell shops, Kippa-Ring shops etc. 30 min drive to Brisbane City. Close to Sunshine Coast, and Glass House mountans. Easy access to Bruce Highway North and South. Train station at Narangba and Burpengary 10-15 minutes drive. Quiet water front, nice cafe, and parklands for kids. Great for kids to explore, and even catch a flathead or whiteing for dinner. Top spot, hurry before the price of property heads North.

"Maybe"

We bought a house in Deception Bay because basically it was the closest to the city that we could actually afford a house that was not a dump. If I had it to do over again I might still pick Deception Bay but probably a different neighbourhood. My recommendation would be to visit the neighbourhood you are interested in buying/renting between Thurs-Sunday nights and probably on the weekend mornings.
Our neighbourhood gets gangs (sometimes it seems to be about 15+) teenagers on drugs/booze (they're on something) going past especially summer time late at night. They sit in our yard yelling at each other. I have called the police on numerous occasions and they usually don't show up until hours later when the problem is gone.
We have neighbours that have parties about once a month on a weekend. My husband works shift work and not the standard Monday to Friday so when they are playing music so loud I think I am at a concert at 3am it does not go down well. Police again do not show up.
There is graffiti almost on every block. This morning I drove by a house that actually had been graffiti'd on the actually building all across the side of it. Something to watch for. Every morning I am worried I will wake up and my garage door will be painted with some tag.
I recommend getting a guard dog if you live in this suburb.
The nearest shopping centre has the essentials but could do with a pick me up. Luckily there is North Lakes which is nearby.
Down by the waterfront it is quite nice and is one of the only redeeming factors.
We need more working families to move into the area and push out the scum!

I could not agree with you more - especially your last comment with regards to pushing out the scum! It is about time that people who have invested in D'Bay stand together and work on getting rid of the YOBS! Affordable property, close to the water, does not need this bad element!

Lipscombe Road,my mum and I have lived here at Aston villa for over 5 years,so close to everything, shops, swimming pool, waterfronts, walkways,Bunnings just up the road,Kippering Village only 10 minutes,5 minutes to the highway and you are on the way to sunshine coast,5 min from forest lakes shopping centre,2 minutes to Mcdonalds, Red Rooster,Subway,KFC,chinese takeaways, bowls club,Dan Murpheys, and, close to schools ,library, centrelink and heaps more, buy here now before the big boom,as Deception Bay has been listed as one of the most popular suburbs to exculate in value very soon.

SusieLockhart
SusieLockhart

Sorry Jennifer and Kbay, you can't judge a whole suburb because of a few streets in a small corner of Deception Bay.It is only a matter of a few years and those streets will more than likely sold off to developers for a very trendy new living area.just as it happened in Redcliffe over the past few years,so as you describe the people as scum at the moment, the Deception Bay suburb will soon become more up market in those minimal areas,as it is already happening in the most parts of Deception Bay now! Like any suburb if you do nothing about people you say are out of control and using drugs, then it also falls back on you and your responsibility as a good citizen to report such problems to the police so that all streets are kept safer for everyone.Any suburb can become out of hand if everyone turns a blind eye to such issues.

"Don't listen to the pessimists!"

You will find a few negative review of D'Bay as you will about most suburbs. We have lived there for 3.5 years.

Pro's - Beautiful bayside location with a refurbished foreshore that makes it a great recreational space - A good cultural mix with Islander, Asian, Indigenous and Anglo populations (sorry if I missed any!) - We have a house next to a Samoan family of 7 and they are wonderful people. We have become firm friends. There are great educational and medical facilities with Redcliffe Hospital only 10-15mins away. North Lakes shopping precinct is only 10-15 mins drive also - and it has everything - The local shopping centre could do with a facelift but it has all the essentials.

Con's - It's a lengthy commute if you work near Brisbane city - Public transport linking D'Bay with Brisbane needs imporvement by either regular direct bus services, or a train line that runs closer to the Bay - Socially the Bay is generally a friendly place. Like anywhere that lacks alot of activities and entertainment for young people the kids do wander around a bit and probably get up to a bit of trouble. But I'd say looks are decieving in that respect. I found the kids and young people to be mostly like kids anywhere and not particularly unruly - The odd hoon doing a donut or fishtail was a pet dislike of mine but that really depends where in the Bay you live. Look for the tire marks on the street to know it happens much where you want to buty or rent!

All in all Deception Bay has all the things going for it that any pretty bayside area does. Over time the social problems will become less and the ongoign development in the region will see house prices increase.

Enjoy! Mat

"Depression Bay."

I have lived in Deception Bay for seven years and have found it a terrible place to live.Every one is so unfriendly. The public schools are really good for education if only the schoosl could control the children and the parents. The private school is friendly but the education is very poor. And we have had to do alot of catch up work at home with the school work. The people are rude .We live near a retirement villiage and the ederly are rude. And have often had a go at me and my children,Because they say they have moved here to retire not to listen to kids play football and balls bouncing.
Quiet a few times i have looked out my back door late at night and seen the local scum trashing fences, bus shelters and sighns.Deception Bay does have a beautiful beach front and i walk my dog down there and we go fishing and it is just lovely down there. But thats all thats beautiful about Deception Bay. To sum it up its an aweful place to live the people are rude from the youg to old.So if your thinking about moving to Deception Bay I would seriously reconsider it.

Seems odd that if Deception Bay is such a horrible place to live why you would stay there for 7 years. Why don't you do us a favour and move!

midmat

I couldn't agree more. I think your review says as much about you as it does about the Bay.
Maybe the reason people were so rude it because you weren't very friendly in the first place?
And lets face it we all know D-Bay has some social problems but it's not as though there are wild gangs roaming the streets or thugs wandering around 24/7. Occasionally you get the odd hoon doing a donut or fishtail and of course there are some marginalised folk. Not everywhere is like Ascot or Kenmore you know!
Take a chill pill (prescription only of course) and please don't come back to the Bay if that's going to be your attitude. Good luck finding utopia. :-)

Yes i agree it is a scummy place and now there is a centerlink here it is worse. We have had our car stolen from the front of our house, our neigbour has had a weelie bin thrown through his windscreen of his car and same with the guy down the road. Another neighbour has had people jump his fence trying to steal his pets, the guy accross the road has had kids scooters and stuff stolen, and people walk past blind, smashing bottles, yelling and carrying on. You cant tell me that this place is great when that happens. Cant people have stuff in their yard without scum trying to steel it. some people work hard for what they got and bums deciede to walk it our property and steel stuff. Glad im moving out.

Hi, I would recommend Deception Bay North State School and Moreton Downs State School. My kids have been to both because of moves and both schools were both very good. I have also heard good reports about Deception Bay High School since a new principal has taken over in the last couple of years. Hope this helps.

hello, thanx happy40 for the feedback, however i recently made the mistake of moving to burps, i felt like i was doing the right thing in regards to getting a government scheme townhouse which was affordable, whereas i was looking everywhere for an affordable townhouse in dbay and everything seems to be getting more expensive. i miss dbay and i want to move back, everything that meant something to me is there, so i want to break my lease and move back but i have to find a room to rent or something in the meantime, if anyone knows of anything, please let me know, its just me and my 5yr old. Or if anyone wants to do a swap or something :) for those of u who dont like dbay, i have a great place here but i love dbay more.

"Around Warroo Drive"

We moved here from Redcliffe. Yes there are Bogans/Hoons, just like in Redcliffe, yes there are robberies just like Redcliffe. The nightlife to be honest is poor but then it's not all that in Redcliffe either. Public transport could be better to the city, you still need to get to Narangba or somewhere for the train. The Bruce Highway is only a few minutes away which makes it great for trips up the Coast or driving into Brisbane (except in the morning when it can be very busy from about Bribie Island turnoff through to the Gympie Road turnoff). Schools are not that great in the immediate area but just outside of D'Bay there are some excellent choices. Police and Ambulance are right there on Deception Bay Road which is very handy. Northlakes is only up the road and this has great shopping and there is a new Aldi's coming soon. There is a Domino's, Subway, video shops, Woolworths, Wow sight and sound, McDonald's, KFC, IGA, Eagle Boy's, BWS x2, loads of wholesale shops the list goes on. There are also a couple of really good gyms in the area and a local pool. Our neighbours are great, very helpful. Beach is not amazing compared to Redcliffe or the coast but it's great for afternoon strolls or fishing. The area is really improving as more owner occupiers are moving in. The place not to be now is Morayfield. I will buy my next property here, not in Redcliffe which is a bit overpriced and made out to be something it's really not (I grew up there). If you have not had a look at Deception Bay then you should come and see it while it's still affordable.

Hi oddjob69,
We're looking to move to Deception Bay in the near future. You stated above that you have to travel to good schools... would you mind saying which schools you'd recommend, I would really appreciate the heads up. Thanks in advance:)

oddjob69

HI 2Happy, sorry I didn't reply sooner don't look here very often really as I already live here. You said your children went to Deception Bay North State School and Moreton Downs State School. I have not heard bad stories from those schools. When I say travel I mean they are not within walking distance for most parts of Deception Bay. Scarborough state school I have heard is one of the best primary schools about the area, but of course this is well out of the area, I have a niece going there and she loves it. A couple of private ones are good and affordable once you sit down and do some 'maths' to see what the cost is eg. Southern Cross. I would suggest if your children are happy where they are then keep them there, more often it's the teachers that make the schools.
I'm so sorry this was so late, and probably no use. I really enjoy living in Deception Bay and I have lived in many places around the world, this one works for me. I hope you still enjoy it too.

"Deception Bay is not that great"

We have lived in Deception Bay for 6 years and when we first moved here yes it was great but now we are getting out thank goodness. It not so quiet, you have sirens racing up and down Deception Bay road at all hours of the day or night, you also have to get a big dog to look after your house as people think they can come in a take what they want without asking. Most people are loud, rude and discussing. There is a centrelink in the shopping centre which is just what you need. We are moving out and if you had any sense you wont move into Deception Bay it sinks.

I have only just started utilising sites such as this to gain an understanding of different areas in which I am considering purchasing a home, and must say I am taken aback by how rude people are when someone states a different experience or feeling about a place. People should feel free to state their experience without being criticised and told to get out. (1) Sometimes situations occur that it takes a while for an indvidual or family to be able to move and; (2) how are those accessing the site able to get a balanced view if others criticise that which their experience of an area? Just saying. Perhaps this is just one example of the type of rudeness that people are referring to when being critical regarding their experience of an area?

"Seaside Peace and Quiet"

Walking along the waterfront with dogs is a true treasure. The dogs have a ball as the beach and part of the kilometers long, waterfront tracks is off-lead and the owners have a chance to interact with the friendly people that live in Deception Bay. It is a non pretentious area with natural beauty and good old fashioned seaside village charm. The highway is easy accessible and traffic within the immediate area flows well. There is a shopping centre with major supermarkets and specialty stores. Primary schools and High Schools are plentiful within a fifteen km range.

Brisbane is about 35 km away and the Sunshine Coast approximately 45 km. Industrial areas are being further developed and real estate is still very affordable.

If you're into partying, nightlife or wild entertaining, Deception Bay can better be skipped. Look up real estate in the Fortitude Valley instead! We enjoy the friendly atmosphere and peace and quiet.
Deception Bay truly is one of Queensland's best kept secrets.
