"Quaint little town in south west Victoria"

Glenthompson in February 2024 is a small town of 230+ people. Sadly many businesses and clubs are now defuct, but there is a community spirit you won't find in bigger places.
Glenthompson is situated between Hamilton and Ballarat on the Glenelg Hwy, with awesome views of the Grampians national park. It is a farming community amongst rolling hills and is the eastern entrance to the Southern Grampians shire. Travel to surrounding towns is: Dunkeld 15 mins, Hamilton 30 mins, Ararat 40 mins, Warrnambool 1 hr and Ballarat 75 mins. There is a Roadhouse which also serves as the local post office agency and general store, as well as a mechanic near by. There is a great little 25m outdoor swimming pool next to a Lions Park with playground and public toilets. There is a delightful Memorial garden in the main street with an unusual topper on the cenotaph The old train station is currently the home of the local history centre. The kindergarten building is the home of a daycare provider who services the surrounding towns as well.
People of the town are involved in football, netball, cricket, tennis, golf and lawn bowls.
There are two active churches - Anglican and Catholic, with the Anglican Church having publicly viewable murals inside.
The town is small but is slowly growing again with the first newly built house in over 20 years currently under construction.

"KEEP AWAY DONT MOVE THERE"

Don't waste your time or money, this town has nothing going for it and its residents have a very low Socioeconomic status. They are looked down on from both Hamilton and Ararat communities. Go look at Dunkeld which is the next town about 20km towards Hamilton, its safe and great if you have children, its where the normal people live.

"Unfortunately not as good as it once was. Overpriced and Overrated!"

I have lived in the area for 15 years and unfortunately over the last few years this suburb has lost some of its gloss and character.

Great for

  • Most facilities are close by and readily available
  • Strathmore is close to the CBD by road & public transport
  • Good schools and sporting facilities; mostly good size homes on big blocks

Not great for

  • Many new homes totally not in keeping with the tastefull character of the suburb have now been built in most streets
  • Speeding traffic is on the increase despite most thru roads now having speed humps installed
  • Burglaries in my street alone are now common place, as are teens and youths roaming the streets at night

Strathmore near Glenthompson is no longer acknowledged. If people google strathmore they get the Melbourne suburb of that name.

"Moonee Valleys best kept secret!"

With a strong combination of quality homes, great educational facilities and excellent transport options, Strathmore is now the most popular suburb for many of Moonee Valley’s young and growing families. Broad in size, it extends north from Woodland Street up to Mascoma Street and around the back of Essendon Airport (Strathmore Heights) virtually to the doorstep of Westfield Shopping Centre. Architectural styles also vary throughout the suburb from 1920s Californian Bungalows to post-war weatherboards in the southern end whilst towards Strathmore Heights sees a growing proportion of 1960s/70s brick veneer homes. Numerous parks are well positioned across the suburb including Napier Park, Strathnaver and Boeing Reserves. Local schools have excellent reputations – in particular Strathmore Secondary College which is one of the area’s strong family drawcards. Access in and out of Strathmore is also excellent with a range of transport options including train (Strathmore Station) and bus services (479, 501) plus the convenience of Citylink/Tullamarine Freeway enabling a trip to the CBD, Docklands or Melbourne Airport in around 10 minutes.
