Reviews of Howrah, TAS
"It's okay, but poor water quality like SandyBay"
I love the ocean, this side of the river is the clear winner but until you're in Rokeby or beyond the water is always a mess. Close to Rokeby and all the best schools in the area so that is a plus
"Now Overcrowded"
I’ve spent a lot of time in Howrah and nearby Tranmere, and while both suburbs used to offer a relaxed lifestyle, that’s changed dramatically in recent years. These days, Howrah is constantly busy, especially during school hours and weekends. Traffic congestion is becoming a daily frustration, and Tranmere isn’t much better with its narrow roads and never-ending wind.
For families, pet owners, or anyone who values peace and space, these suburbs are quickly losing their appeal. The rise in Airbnbs and dense housing developments has changed the vibe entirely—what once felt like a community now feels more like a revolving door of visitors and traffic.
When you compare that to Rokeby—just a few minutes down the road—it’s hard to understand why anyone would choose to live here. Rokeby has the same stunning water views without the chaos, better access to community parks, and a quieter, more family-friendly feel. The local IGA and growing infrastructure make it incredibly convenient without losing its peaceful charm.
If you're looking for real value, lifestyle, and long-term growth, Rokeby is the one to watch. It’s not just more affordable—it's better planned and offers what Howrah and Tranmere used to before being overrun.
"Nices beaches but poor water quality"
Used to live back here a while ago. Bought here as my first house but moved out after a year due to the smelly beaches and area. And another bad this is that the water quality absolutely sucks and the beaches reek of saltiness and seaweed. Not the best "Beachside Location" and the 'city life' here sucks as the shops are basic and you have to drive to go somewhere good. I'd rather move to all out to Coles bay. Never buying here again.
"Nice area but Overpriced"
Howrah is a very lovely area but i believe its overpriced for what you get its closer to hobart but some people living there are quite snobby. the streets are narrow and navigation is very diffucult to get through. And the traffic is horrible especially getting to work in the morning. I'd recommend saving up for sandy bay instead.

"Currently building my house in Howrah"
I've rented in Howrah for 3 years, have bought a block and am currently building. It is one of the nicesnt suburbs of Hobart. Close to the city but far enough away to be a quiet area with lots of space and bush. Great views from everywhere. Very clean and safe.

"Beautiful Glebe Hill Howrah"
take a drive into the glebe hill entrance and you know all the residents are very house proud of their mostly new homes they are kept in perfect condition
and this reflects an open feel to this new suburb
like all new subdivisions there are new houses going up all the time and the builders are actively getting on with the job... this causes a little of inconvenience when trucks are in and out of the estate but this will disperse when all home sites are built upon
the future looks bright for the new part of howrah ... easy access to hobart ..easy access to shopping ..open spaces for walking ..valley and mountain views
Great for
- Mountain views valley views
- Clean environment
- Friendly neighbors
- Naturally beautiful
- Relatively Affordable
- Wide open spaces
Not great for
- Needs a local shop inside glebe hill estate

The need for local shops in Glebe Hill is true but there is the Howrah fruit market right at the entrance and the Shoreline shopping centre is 2 minutes drive away.
"Great Views, wonderful people."
Close to the city, airport, shopping centres. Best views in Hobart, overlooking city, Mt Wellington, Casino. Sun out for much longer than the Western Suburbs making it warmer all year round. Moderately priced compared to other overrated suburbs. Beautiful natural beauty, two lovely beaches located IN the Suburb, and one adjacent, Bellerive Beach. A few minutes drive to the world renowned Bellerive Oval.
Great for
- Naturally beautiful
- Wide open spaces
- Relatively Affordable
Not great for
- Lack of decent play parks for children (compared with the Western Shore)

Hi, you put in the lack of parks as a con. I live in Ninabah St, there are 5 parks within 2 minutes walking distance and I live right next door to one. Along the beach, there are 4 more seperate parks (5 mins walking) and over 10 sports grounds that I know of.
Hi Mate,
I am looking at a block of land at Howrah and wanted to ask you how much does it roughly cost to build around there?
Cheers.
