Reviews of James Street, Northcote

"A street with a few faults, but it's so convenient"

James Street is right on the crest of Northcote hill, so has some brilliant views all the way to the Dandenongs, some of the older houses, populated with residents who've been there since the 50's are wonderful, with that lovely old world charm and care, unfortunately at the high street end are a couple of blocks of flats that seem to be full of loud and fairly impolite younger people (and I'm 27, hardly an OAP), which does give the street a bit of a tarnished reputation. It's a street I would never cross without looking and listening, the hoons patrol it a little. However as far as convenience goes it's hard to beat. Trams, trains, buses all within walking distance, and the city is 20 minutes away by any form of Public Transport. The Town Hall with free entertainment at the new outdoor arena is less than a minutes walk away, local bars and restaurants serving just about every cuisine you can think of from French to Nepalese, and it's a 5 minute walk down the hill to Westgarth and the Old Valhalla cinema, which is a marvellous place for anyone who likes Arthouse films, and a 10 minute walk the other way to the local shopping centre. Perfectly placed, you don't actually need a car.
