For someone who has lived in the area for 20 years I can say that there is no other suburb you would want to live in. 2 Train lines and multiple tram routes means you can leave your car at home. Walking distance to trendy cafes built into old garages and factories. Vibrant high street with restaurants for every type of taste as well as parks for the kiddies and your dogs. With a 30 minute cycle into the city you may even decide to ditch your car for good.

Located just north-east of the city, this vibrant, multicultural inner-city neighbourhood provides you with the optimal laid-back lifestyle.
Northcote centres around High Street, which is home to a plethora of fantastic and diverse cafés, restaurants, supermarkets, shops, and venues. Northcote has a strong feeling of community, with neighbourhood festivals and artistic activities held all year round.

The suburb is known for its bike culture, but it also has great public transportation options, including trams, buses, and railway stations all within close proximity. There are many reputable schools and nice parklands and reserves also within the area.
Northcote is ideal for those who wish to live in a laid-back, artistic suburb with a vibrant café scene.

Something for everyone. Though becoming more gentrified by the minute.

Northcote is relaxed and laid back suburb, that has the energy of High street at its heart. High street is lined with international cuisine ranging from Japenese (Ramen/Sushi take your pick), Greek to the ever popular Welcome to Thornbury which features a different line up of food trucks daily.
Locals of Northcote are spoilt for choice when it comes to cafes, with great cafes both all along high street as well as the local hangouts that serve up a premium cup of Joe. Housing is a mix of Californian bungalows, terrace homes and as is the trend of most inner city suburbs townhomes and apartments. You can get an amazing view of the city from the top of Ruckers Hill, especially on a night when there are fireworks on in the city.
Public transport is fantastic with the suburb serviced by two tram line along with 2 train lines (5 stations in total).
Great parklands and Merri Creek and Darebin Creek are so close for nature lovers.

Northcote has been an up & coming suburb for many years now. With new cafes & businesses opening up daily. Constantly provides great results. Easy access into the city, close to public transport & shops.

Northcote is one of my favourite suburbs. The suburb is serviced amazingly by two train lines (Hurtsbridge and Mernda lines) and two tram lines (High Street and St Georges Road). Bordered by beautiful parklands (Merri Creek Linear Reserve and Northcote golf course) as well as offering ample cafes, restaurants and eateries along the popular High Street. Many of the houses still showcase their heritage era and the majority of the residential streets are stunning tree lined. There's not much to love about Northcote.

I find that there is a touch of yesteryear about Northcote. For this reason, it's not my kind of area as I prefer modern and fresh. I can appreciate that people would like the area given it's proximity to city and interesting shops and cafes. Unfortunately, driving is not a pleasant experience if you take any of the main roads.

I'm also put off by areas where drinking is a top priority. Too old for that!

Northcote feels like an up and coming suburb. A lot of change in the last couple of years; new cafes, new bars and development (most of these are positive). At the same time, let's hope the change is kept at a reasonable pace so that the older aspects of the suburb are retained. Westgarth shops have improved, and the "old world" cinemas remain a highlight. It's not hard to get out of the hustle and bustle; merri creek provides refreshing respite from the streetscapes and traffic as it curls its way towards the yarra. Great for a run or bike ride. Amenities are good, plenty of gyms, shopping, etc nearby. When including the surrounding suburbs, dining is excellent.

Once the outer limits of the city Northcote is now almost considered the inner city. Overblown housing driven up by investors and rental houses in desperate need of repair despite their high costs. I currently live off High Street and we have a minimum of 4 garbage/delivery trucks each morning. They start from 3am. Great place to come and have a coffee if you can even get a park.

Forget dashing out to get something from the supermarket before dinner, as the traffic gridlock and lack of close supermarkets will see you back by 8pm.

Great access to public transport, cafes and parks, but if you are looking for a place for families and kids, look somewhere else.

Having lived in Northcote for 4 years and then moving to the inner bayside suburbs, I really miss the laid back and relaxed atmosphere that Northcote has. I lived right on High Street down in the Westgarth area and was within 5 minutes walking distance from 2 train stations and the tram stop. The cafe's along High Street are mostly of high quality without being being pretentious and there is quite a range of other specialty shops. And the view of the city from the top of Ruckers Hill is amazing, especially on a night when there are fireworks on in the city.

I never found parking in the area an issue however being right on High Street was quite noisy with the traffic and the trams. You do tend to get used to the noise though.

In terms of safety, I never felt unsafe in Northcote as there are always people around. In saying that though, our house was broken into once (after someone left the door unlocked) in the 4 years we were there. I guess that can happen in any suburb.

I would definitely move back to Northcote in a heartbeat.
