Reviews of Port Kembla, NSW

"You're missing out!"

Highly underrated costal suburb with great beaches and close proximity to local shops and eateries. Even the local primary school has uninterrupted views! Prices are cheaper than the northern suburbs and it has so much more to offer without the congestion that you get trying to get a costal property anywhere north.

Looking for a home in Port Kembla?

"The Illawarra's Hidden Gem!"

Port Kembla is Wollongong's hidden gem. Amazing beaches, scenic local pool, a school with ocean views, up and coming business district on Wentworth St with lots of quirky eateries and cafes. Warrawong Plaza shopping centre nearby including two cinemas. Port Kembla has everything you need for a fraction of the price of the Northern Suburbs... but not for long. Port Kembla is one to watch!

"Great place to live"

Port kembla is an awesome place to live. If you're not from here be aware that there is a large industrial section to the north and the Main Street is undergoing the process of gentrification.

The Main Street has a club, 3 pubs, fish and chips, waxing, newsagent, speak fishing shop, music store, bulk nutrients, Serbian Burek, butcher, tobacconist, bakery, pie shop, realestate agent, tile shop, chemist, dentist, doctor, day spa, function venue (the vault), multiple wedding shops for dresses, flowers decorations, 3 hair dressers, photographer, printing place, art galleries and workshops, event caterer, sustainable vegan friendly cafe, furniture restoration, upholstery, recreational retailer (hunting), bottle shop, plus multiple cafes, five petrol stations (hence cheapest fuel in the illawarra) 4xsmash repairs/mechanics. A Spanish restaurant down near the beach and several other fish and chip shops and cafes spread around the town. Don't know what people mean when they say the Main Street is dead?!

It's a port - so ofcourse there are boarding houses and a few street workers, never caused a problem to anyone I know in town!!!

The beach is fantastic, the native bush regeneration on the oval and through the alleys is beautiful. So many native birds flourishing around now as well. The pool is fantastic.

We absolutely love it here!

"Small suburb"

Not the ideal place you would want to live in, has an industrial feel to the main street, rough looking, not much around at all! I wouldnt live in Port Kembla at all! some prostitutes roam around, not good for families except if you live closer to the beach end, has the best beach far better than Wollongong beach in my opinion! close to Westfield shops, domayne, harvey norman etc..has medical facilities, bulk billing, dental in Warrawong, between Wollongong and Shellharbour, if renting or buying do it closer to the beach other part ugly!

Great for

  • Between Wollongong & Shellharbour
  • Quiet
  • 3 beaches

Not great for

  • Rough looking
  • Industrial feel
  • Drugs
  • Main Street
  • Prostitution

Moved here with my family and haven't looked back. The locals are fantastic and there is a real sense of community. Best value for $$!Where else can you find property for the price so close to the beach? And the swimming pool is fantastic, the kids love it. There is everything you need from parks, a train station and local shops. It really is a hidden gem, and we feel very blessed that we got in when we did!

Rentals in Port Kembla

"Best kept secret"

We bought in Port Kembla four years ago and we are so happy we made that decision. It really is a best kept secret. Where else for the price can you get a free standing home, on such a big block SO CLOSE TO THE BEACH . It has a real community spirit, where people stop you in the streets and say hello. There is a park opposite the beach for kids to play and is close to the shops and the train station. Port Kembla mainstreet is picking up, with new shops popping up all the time - fruit& veges and cafes! It is a fantastic place with a relaxed atmosphere and we LOVE IT!

"My Opinion Port Kembla"

Port Kembla is a Nice place but also has a lot of downs to it. Eg Public Transport is very poor including the rail line and also the Local Train Station is in need of some upgrade. Other things that are bad about Port Kembla is the main Street Wentworth Street which is a Ghost town plagued with Prostitution and Drugs at Night. Shops in Port Kembla are poor you have one 2x Petrol Stations, 2x Ethnic Macedonian Mixed Business, Barber, Bottle Shop, Resturant, Post Office and the rest is all empty shops. The good things about Port Kembla is the beach and pools thats about it and aslo the Primary School looks nice and clean whilt the Secendory High School looks like it will need a major renovation.

Not great for

  • Prostitution
  • Drugs
  • Main Street

"Great Place for Families and Couples"

We have been living here for 3 years now. We love it. It's a real gem of a small seaside community. It's like a country town with a great community spirit. We have great neighbours. We know people by their first name in our local shops. Love the beach and public pool. The beach is absolutely beautiful and clean. Local restaurants are also on the main street. You can do your meat, fruit and veges shopping locally on the main street, and has post office, newsagents and lots more. For large weekly grocery shops it's only a few minutes to Westfield mall. The kids can play in the parks - there are several sports fields.

There are cinemas just down the road too.

Port Kembla real estate is starting to boom. The housing here is outstanding value for money. Where else can you walk to beach, train, schools, shops for such bargain prices?
