Reviews of Rozelle, NSW

"A calm, beautiful place to live - with a bit of reputation of snobbery especially moving into Balmain"

I've lived here for over 2 years now - I am definitely one of the younger residents in the area. Rozelle and Balmain mostly caters to seniors and well-to-do families. There isn't much open past dinner time , except for maybe the Sackville hotel, and Red Lion further down the road that caters to the real locals. Great access to multiple beautiful parks that front along the coastline - if you're a walker/runner, this is a good spot for it. Balmain Leagues Club with apartments on top is currently being built - which should add a bit more life, but again positioned to older folk and calm, family-friendly outings.

"Unfriendly"

I love the area itself, lots of great cafes and water views, close to the city and reasonably priced real estate with views but its a really unfriendly area. If you're young you have to deal with rude middle aged boomers that pick fights and complain all day about young people in the area because they want to tell young people how they should act and always get stuck dealing with some who want to speak to you like they're your parent. Not to mention the amount of homeless people in the area - Have been street harassed and verbally abused and had some men follow me trying to intimidate me or look me up and down in really inappropriate ways and have made me feel uncomfortable. Recommend caution for younger women.

"Great place with massive Cafe scene more friendly than Balmain"

I lived here forever from when it was a run down joint, now it's totally transformed. Once the ugly sister to Balmain, now you see a total transformation and now Balmain is the ugly sister with empty shops everywhere.

"Singles/ young couples, professionals, stay away!- Not a 'cool' place to live"

I also disagree with the comments on here that this is a friendly neighbourhood. It may be only family friendly, which i am afraid only leaves a xenophobic attitude towards the rest of us. My partner and are moving after having lived here the past two years and to put it into perspective, our 'local' cafe still don't remember us, that's with tipping! Perhaps we'd have to have a child hanging off our arm or have lived in the neighbourhood for over twenty years to be taken more seriously, but the 'local' mentality is very evident here. Oh i also forgot to mention the 'local' residents are extremely nosey of new tenants, and not in the "hi! welcome to the neighbourhood way" more like "how can we get rid of you way". Singles/ young couples, professionals, stay away!
Further, there doesn't seem to be any real benefits to living in Rozelle, apart from public transport being amazing and one massive amazing dog park, everything else is put to shame. The food is overrated! Not only is the food over priced and just bad..watch out for food poisoning! Don't order anything like fish otherwise don't say you weren't warned! The nightlife is borderline (a very strange masculine atmosphere-and oddly a bit rough dare i say bogan?). The overall vibe is just weird, market day (weekend markets) seems like a good idea but never is. Not including the string of pubs on Victoria road before darling st, Local pub vibe is unfriendly (bartenders just seemed to be bored but also rude). It's still quite noisy, the roads are full of pot holes, the houses are old but you're expected to pay Surry Hills like fees, just expensive. If you've recently popped out a kid this seems like your gig..have fun with that. If you're currently enjoying the existence of not having a child, don't live here.

SallyL2 doesn't know what she's talking about and seems to have an axe to grind - have lived here as a single prof and family man, and it's a great high amenity suburb. Maybe your attitude is why the locals weren't fans Sal? (!)

jacqueline-t1

Im a young single and agree with this review. people are so unfriendly and rude and middle aged people around here hate younger people.

@bobs11 you're criticising someone saying people are rude in the area and leaving quiet a rude comment. This is a public forum where everyone is entitled to different opinions and just because someone says something you don't agree with doesn't mean they have an attitude :).

"Rozelle - Village feel with a great sense of community spirit"

Lifestyle
Rozelle is located 4 kilometres west of the CBD. Rozelle sits between the suburbs of Balmain to the north-west and Lilyfield to the south-west. Iron Cove is on the north-west border whilst Rozelle Bay, White Bay and Johnstons Bay make up the south-east border.

Like Balmain, Rozelle offers a vibrant lifestyle with superb eateries, pubs and shops. The area is extremely popular for young families and professionals with its lifestyle offerings and close proximity to the CBD.

Transport
Regular buses travel along Darling Street and Victoria Road to the CBD and neighbouring suburbs of Glebe, Lilyfield, Leichhardt and other areas. Rozelle station on the Annandale border is a terminus of the Metro Light Rail. The station opened in 2000, using a disused spur of a goods railway line from Central railway station. The Sydney Fish Markets, Star City Casino, Darling Harbour and Chinatown are all on the list of destinations easily accessible by Sydney Light Rail.

Local Amenities
- Rozelle markets every Saturday and Sunday at Rozelle Public School for an eclectic mix of food, clothing, art, crafts and more.
- Browse Darling Street for your fill of retail therapy – bicycles, books, Belgian chocolates, flowers, whitegoods and appliances, homewares, phones, sunglasses, fruit’n’veges, organic food, beauty products and aboriginal art.
- One of the city’s finest hubs of vintage clothing for the serious shopper.
- Relax at an alfresco café or restaurant and watch the street scene.
- A coffee aficionados dream – find your favourite!
- Get fit or learn self-defence in White Bay and Victoria Road.
- Commonwealth Bank, Australia Post, Bendigo Bank. Rozelle Community Centre, St Thomas Anglican Church and Day Care Centre. St Josephs Catholic Church Quirk Street.

  • Weekend markets
  • Independent shops and cafes
  • Waterside walks

"Rozelle a nice place to live? Depends who you are..."

I've lived in Rozelle for a year now and I'm leaving as soon as my tenancy contract is complete. The area itself is fine: shops, cafes, resturuants, pubs, etc. It also good in terms of access to the city and for local walks (bay run). However, I disagree with all other reviewers that the place is good for singles, couples, professionals... in fact, I'd say the place is only good for families as you probably won't be troubled by the number of other families. I'm not against kids, but I do struggle with families who think everyone else should put up with the noise their child makes and see them as perfectly as they do, which is something I've noticed a lot in Rozelle. So, if you're a family, you'll probably fit in; if you don't have kids, you may find it noisy and annoying!

"Convenient, safe and fun"

Such a fun place to live! On the doorstep of the best part of Darling St (About Life, cafes, restaurants, IGA), easy walk to buses on Victoria Rd, easy access to the city by car, beautiful walks to Bay Run and Elkington Park (great for New Year's Eve fireworks). There's a real buzz here; great for all ages. My kids love the parks. My tween loves that it is safe enough for her to walk to the shops on Darling St on her own.

"Lived in 11 suburbs in Sydney - Rozelle is the best place to live"

There is such an amazing sense of community here and it is still quite electic and definitely not boring. I am a single woman living on my own and feel extremely safe (when I moved here from Balmain East, my car insurance premium reduced quite a bit!) It is both dog and cat friendly with plenty of parks, and there are loads of different types of people living here - both family, young professionals and older people - because they can just walk to the shops and schools. Rozelle does seem to attract more affluent people due to the close proximity to the CBD. Growth in property prices is assured because home owners consistently add value to their properties, even during the GFC Rozelle experienced growth. Rozelle is the home of Adriano Zumbo, Herbies Spices, Vittoir, Belle Fleur chocolates, so it has become the true home of foodies. After living in so many different suburbs in Sydney, Rozelle is the best place to live by far.

"At Home on the Peninsular and loving it!"

Dont know what the previous reviewer has against Rozelle but if you buy/rent in an area where people are bound to renovate then that is your problem.
Rozelle is a great suburb for transport to/from city - 10 mins door to door.
Great options for food/restaurants (over 60) on the peninsula/pubs (over 20) /shopping all within 10 mins walk up the road - you don't need a car! Schools are also very, very good. Top 100 in the state. Then our beautiful parks - take a walk in one and you will know what I mean!
I have lived in an apartment for over five years that is an established area and don't have any problems with noisy neighbours - in fact ours is very quiet. I have more issue with council trying to put in a football field in bridgewater park.................. Say no to this!
All in all a good suburb, taking in the harbour and very, very close to the city!

"neighbours constantly renovating and underneath the flight path."

Been here for 5 years now. Trying to get out but its difficult to find anything to buy that we can afford in other areas. Neighbours have no respect for each others peace and quiet. means nothing to them to have music blasting at 3 am. Corner shop keeps getting robbed so that's nice. Cook St residents constantly fight and drive like maniacs. Council has allowed continuous renovations around us. One lot of finishes and just when you get a big of piece from the cut off wheels/drilling/hammering/jack hammering/angle grinders another lot starts!!! neighbour down the road has been doing his for an eternity and looks like never finishing. Flight path is awful and at 5pm you may as well be living in Tempe. There's that nice smell of kerosene in the air. yeah the bay run is nice if you avoid the iron cove bridge bit/city west link.... who wants to exercise in all that pollution??? Council never sweep the roads and they are full of pot holes. The same bunch of plastic bottles has been by Lilyfield tram stop since last years marathon... the park is full of dog shit and fag butts so that is really lovely too.... Balmain is just as bad but at least the flight path isn't an issue there.

To truely understand the noise issue in Sydney it is important to look at the following document, http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/aviation/environmental/transparent_noise/expanding/2.aspx#5. If, like me you live in the UK you can sompare it to Heathrow at http://webtrak.bksv.com/lhr in combination with the BAA web site
http://www.heathrowairport.com/portal/page/Heathrow+noise%5EGeneral%5ENoise+in+your+area%5ETrack+flights+near+you/ff28255eefa53210VgnVCM10000036821c0a____/448c6a4c7f1b0010VgnVCM200000357e120a____/

If you know the UK you will see that Windsor (where the Queen has a residence) and Richmond (where Mick Jagger amoung others has a house) are affected by noise in takeoffs and landings. There appears to be 3 times more flyovers in the UK than Australia so I am guessing the problem is only that the noise doesnt affect other areas as much and not the number of flyovers.

Wow--you sound bitter! If you can afford Rozelle you can afford plenty of other suburbs--whereas how could students afford it? The Bay Run starts and finishes at bridge in Rozelle--the other 10.9 ks are not near bridge...Cook St mostly houso--shouldnt be to much reno going on. My street is so quiet--near bridge--can't smell any kero...
