"Cafe's everywhere"

Sandgate has some amazing cafe's in the area with some great coffee. You can take lovely walks along the beach, and just take in the incredible scenery.

Thanks!

"Character homes in beautiful bayside location"

People are literally on a waiting list to live in this beautiful suburb , full of character homes and a friendly community, picturesque waterfront and easy access to city and major shopping centres. Feels like a country town by the water. Please don’t let planners spoil the uniqueness of this suburb , leave it be and build your high rises elsewhere.

Rentals in Sandgate

"It’s not even that far"

Many people that have spent their entire lives in Brisbane would consider 15km from the CBD to be a major distance, but anybody who has lived in a big city before would know that this is a modest and comfortable commute, just enough to get through a couple of chapters of your book. The Shorncliffe Line is one of the most reliable on the SEQ network and will get you into work in the CBD in a little over 30 mins (and being the start of the line - you always get a seat). Sandgate station is modern, has abundant parking and also has good bus connections. For private vehicles, both major arterials of the the Gateway Motorway and Sandgate Road run directly through the area and are easily accessible and will get you to the city in 25 mins and the beach in 45 mins.

Finally, the social scene of Sandgate has very recently lifted its game and is no longer just a few fish and chip shops and a shady pub. The Post Office Hotel has recently had a face-lift and become very family friendly (and with great food). The Full Moon Hotel overlooking the bay has also been renovated and is a great spot for dinner and drinks with a view. A number of trendy bars with live music and craft beers have also popped up recently, including a wine and tapas bar.

Overall, Sandgate has some issues that Council needs to look at addressing such as the shopping strips that it allows to stay vacant and the tired looking town centre and a very vocal NIMBY population that doesn’t allow the area to flourish to its full potential. But with its existing infrastructure and natural beauty is bursting with potential.

Alternatively, if you want the bayside lifestyle with a short hop to the city without the price tags of Sandgate and Shorncliffe, the eastern sections of Deagon and Brighton are all walking distance to the bay and just as peaceful and safe (if not more).

What do you mean 'by a very vocal NIMBY population that doesnt allow the area to flourish to its full potential'? Does your idea of 'full potential' mean high rises in a historic village? If so, I'm glad to live in a 'vocal' community. It would be nuts for Sandgate to go down the high rise path when its historic character is the very reason it appeals to so many people, including newcomers. If by 'potential' you don't mean high rises, then I'd be interested to know what in fact you do mean.

"Gorgeous by the water but a grueling commute"

I’ve lived in Sandgste for two years now. A gorgeous suburb full of character homes and being by the water is hard to beat. A great place to take kids and dogs for a sunset walk along the water, especially at dusk. The food scene isn’t great. There are a handful of good restaurants and cafes but very suburban fare generally and not at all comparable to the kind of foodie fare available closer to the city. The commute to the city is absolutely grueling. Often it takes me an hour in peak hour traffic along sadgate road to the city and it’s an ugly commute generally. I think this is a great suburb to raise a family in but don’t be fooled by the other reviews. This is very much outer suburbs and the commute to the city reflects that. This also apples to getting in to the city to participate in the cultural scene the suburb is lacking.

30 mins on the train to the city is a short commute compared to most major cities.

"Incredible village life with sea side living"

We moved from Canberra and have loved our sea change. The community have welcomed us, the local shops and cafes are awesome. We have a young family - our children love our sea side adventures everyday.

My husband commutes to the city via train each day and he finds this commute very easy. We have not experienced any problems with the train line since he has been commuting.

The houses are mostly historic Queenslanders, it representes value for dollar.
The biggest plus is that it is a healthy, active, young and vibrant family oriemtated community!!!

We love it here!

"No need to get in your car, it's all here"

Funnily enough, like the reviewers below we moved here from the Northern Beaches of Sydney where I have lived most of my life. Why did we move here? To get all the best bits without a $2,000,000 mortgage for a 3 bedroom house (seriously). The one thing we are missing from where we lived though are the Sandy white beaches but with Redcliffe only a 10 minute drive away, we think that it's a fair exchange to save a million dollars (literally).

Good bits: Woolies, Aldi, cafes, restaurants, beach (black sand), parks, beautiful views. 15 minute drive to two massive shopping centres (Chermside and North Lakes) for the BIG things...and yes, there is even an Ikea there. Kite surfing, water sports right on your doorstep, and the train into town takes about 30-45 minutes depending on which end you are going.

Bad bits: Not white sand on the beach, too many empty shops because most of the buildings are owned by a few very greedy apathetic people who charge very high rents and don't' care when businesses go under (please excuse the rant). If you are buying near the lagoons, check how your property is for mosquitos. We have none, but we leave on the water side of Brighton Rd.

Should you live here? Yes, it has a great community feel and people seem to be nicer here overall. We are very happy we moved here and are encouraging our friends from Sydney to do so. One bit of advice, check the flood history of your property though and buy on the water side of Brighton Rd if you can afford to.... and most importantly, fantastic for people with friendly doggys

Hi Mummam, this community has been going through a bit of a transition lately with many more families moving in as the elderly move out. My neighbours were all welcoming and with new blood moving into the area, there really aren't any 'clicks' that I've experienced in the community.

mummam

Thanks so much. I did check out one of the facebook pages and the responses to house prices rising was so different to where I am living now. We moved from Mosman to Wollongong (my parents don't live too far from here) and they have a big issue with people moving into the area.
I homeschool my two children and am disabled and chronically ill so having a welcoming community within walking distance is really important for me.

"Pretty family friendly, lifestyle plus! Great village atmosphere"

We relocated here from the northern beaches of Sydney. We love the Queenslanders, beautiful bayside and village life. Food and cafes are increasing in quality. We have no reason to get in our car during the week with the train an easy 30min to the city the kids schools and shops all at our doorstep. This suburb suits people who want to balance lifestyle with proximity to city. It is ideal for young families. Having lived all over Australia for work, sandgate is the surburb we decided to make our "forever home". We are happy, relaxed and live a healthy outdoors life here.

City is fun sometimes, but unfortunately during the summer months, I know where I would rather live! Yep, beside the sea, where I can catch all day breezes and not be stuck inside under an air conditioner.

Hello Sandgate people. We are looking to move to Sandgate. Wondering how is trade work around the town. Ie. plumber be welcomed? And are the shops reasonable to rent for business? Thanks in anticipation.

"Wonderful place to live!"

Sandgate is a lovely place to live. The waterfront is a fantastic place to enjoy for pleasure or exercise or just to stroll with your pets! Sandgate village has everything you need and there are now some fantastic restaurants and cafes. The BEST pizza is at Il Forno! The train is only 30 mins to the city and when you return in the afternoon you feel a million miles away from work. Recommend Sandgate to All!

And it's only a 1/2 hour train ride from the city. Far enough away to not be in the midst of the hustle and bustle but close enough to get to work and back.

"Proud Queenlander Owners"

The Sandgate train station is a lovely landmark and the train line goes directly to the city of Brisbane witin 30 mins. The shopping and local presence of the Character achitecture is always a pleasure to see, the local new shopping centre has also been built with the character local buildings in mind so as not to look out of place. Sandgate offers the very best in Village living. And the prettiest Queenslander Properties this side of Clayfield. Signed Anya Coory
