"A place to settle & raise a family"

A mix between suburbia and bushland, South Morang is the place to settle and raise a family. If you’re craving the outdoors, not too far in any direction is a walking trail or park. Shopping is no issue with Westfield Plenty Valley on your door step. You can shop and eat all day. Public transport can take you into the city if you like. The South Morang train station is located conveniently out the front of Westfield.

"Great Place to Live"

Have been living in South Morang since 2007. has come a long way and now boasts some great infrastructure with 3, yes 3 train stations - South Morang, Middle Gorge and Hawkstowe. The train line extension to Mernda and the triplication of Plenty road has alleviated all peak time traffic. Beautiful homes, good schools, wonderful trails at The Gorge, nice restaurants, its a great place to live

"Most beautiful suburb"

This suburb is the most beautiful and green with lakes. Feels like we are on holiday everyday. From quarry hill park we can see city sky line at one side and so green kangaroos running on other... it is a perfect mix of beauty and modern.Nice pubs and entertainment area in the plenty valley west field.

"Perfect mix of suburbia and countryside"

A family orientated and neighbourly community with great surrounding schools and spectacular views.
A safe area full of life's amenities available, shopping precincts, parklands and public transport.
There are also some hidden gem restaurants which are surrounded by the beautiful countryside.

"A safe and all accessible place to live.. Love it"

South Morang is a fantastic place to live. As a family person, everything that you ask for / look for is right here in south Morang. Here is the list of things /qualities of this suburb and if you are not getting what you are, then I don't know where will you get.

1) A safe and low crime statistics. In my last 5 years of life here, I haven't heard any incident happend to my near and dears.
2) Eating hangouts - West field / Stables host most top restaurants that you seek in Melbourne. You have a Village cinemas as well to party out your weekends. Good news is more malls and eateries are keep coming.
3) If you are a young family - There are so many day cares / good schools ( private and Public ) in South morang / mill park area. Yes Mill park is an adjustment suburb so those schools will come in catchment as well.
4) M80 free way is about 2 - 3 KM from south morang which will connect you to all major freeways.
5) Station parking -> Do you love to come at 10 am and still get a parking ?? yes this is probably the only place you get that. Yes there are so much of parking.
6) House prices affordable but increasing value so best place to invest as well.
7) So many aged care providers in and around south morang. So if you are somoneone, who want to live free till that moment and slowly transition to an aged care home in your locality itself then, there it is.
8) The suburb itself has 3 stations, South Morang, Marymade , Hawstowe. Yes you heard 3 and thats truly 3.
9) People - Very gently people all around. While you walk in the street, you get time of the day wishes ( good morning evening ). People care to each other, clean parks, no fights and lot of reserves

"Moved here 3 months ago and loving it!"

Used to live/work in the West side, but decided to move to North.
Though the house is expensive here, but I am glad I made the move, e.g close to friends, relatives and friendly locals.
The houses on the West side though really affordable, but wasn't the way of life I'm looking for.
Like they say cheap things aren't good, good things aren't cheap.

"Not a nice suburb..."

A lot of rough people in South Morang and I do not feel safe at all when in South Morang. The suburb lacks trees and character. It has an industrial feel to it. Plus the roads are a nightmare.

Have been here for 10 years and love it. Not sure what the other reviews are saying. But south Morang is safe clean and friendly people. I go for walks and everyone will say hello as they pass you. A bit of traffic but this is everywhere. Even if you live in the city you get traffic.

"OK suburb."

Too busy and badly planned. Hopefully the train will improve the amenities. The countryside used to lovely around here till this pimple was superimposed onto it. For a suburb planned sympathetically with the land look at Doreen and Mernda. Both are far more attractive than South Morang

Great for

"Nothing special suburb too far from the city to be this busy congested and pricy."

An outer suburb should be beautiful and picturesque and quiet and affordable to make up for being far from the city. South Morang is none of these.

Not great for

  • Needs to establish selective school

"Decent suburb that has become too busy and no longer that great value for money. Too far from the city but without the country feel."

South Morang is a pleasant suburb that is not as green and picturesque as suburbs like Doreen and even Mernda but has become too expensive and extremely busy. The problem is the developers who do not create a consistent look in the area. In Mernda and Doreen they have planted shrubs and trees and laid out the roads beautifully but in South Morang it has been very helter skelter. There are also very many power lines running through that are a real eyesore.

Great for

  • Train service, possible tram extension

"Love this place"

Lived in South Morang for a year and I love the area. Me and my wife rent currently and wanted to build our new home close by because we love it so much. Lots of parks to visit and go for long walks. I would say the food is a good standard. I have to be honest and say the people around here don't talk much. Everyone seems to keep to themselves.

"South Morang Melbourne-A great affordable and safe place to live"

I own a house here, built about 8 years ago in Glory Street. I like it here because it is 400 metres to the shops-supermarket and specialty shops, a few minutes walk to a day care centre and buses. You can't hear traffic or people when you are going to bed. Its even too quiet at night! People are friendly and also respect their neighbours privacy. Drive the streets and you see how safe the suburb is -with lots of open space, schools ,shops -its great for families. No high rise is a bonus, compared to the inner city. The rents are reasonable for 3-4 br houses. Its worth buying here as house prices can only increase when more discover this gem of a suburb. In Sydney suburbs in new outer suburbs are twice the rent and price. South Morang may be 22 km from the CBD but who cares-the S. Morang train station is convenient and who would drive in Plenty Rd traffic to the CBD anyway?

I would think that hipsters and gay&lesbians are the ones with the most disposable income and would not fit in your "low socioeconomic demographic" or is a case where they would fit better with the "unsightly" high power voltage, like in a closet?

nataliei

We wish gay lesbians hipsters! My son in law is hipster. He lived in Clyde St StKilda, now bought a house in Seaford, near the beach. Outer suburbs have mostly tradies and low income retirees like me.

I agree -it is a pleasant area without ugly power poles and noise with good people and amenities at affordable rent and prices. Many houses were built in the last 10 years which means they are in good condition. Harmony Rd and Glory St. for example a few minutes walk to day care centre and Coles, take away food, cafe ,liquor store and buses.

"Great place to start a family and affordable"

SM is a great place, We are living there for the last 2 years, this has everything we want. One of few places where 24 hours GP is available. A real boon for working parents with young kids. Close to Westfield, Northland. This locality does lack in night life though, but will improve in the future I guess. very peaceful with lot of greens everywhere. Love the Yan yean reserve and the parks around the area.

Add a comment... You must have been lost somewhere else and thought you were in S.Morang. There is not crime in this area other than kids nicking lollies at the shops. Try the inner suburbs for crime and drugs not here.

"Facilities at your fingertips & Extremley Affordable"

Ideal & very secure location with schools, transport, Homemaker centre, parklands, restaurants, Westfield Shopping Centre & Gorge National Park all within 1 minute drive from central South Morang. The "Riverside Estate" especially is rated very high as the estate itself offers Community Centre, kindergarten, parklands, nature walks surrounding the whole estate, Riverside Primary School & easy access to the Diamond Valley & Ring Road. As soon as the train station is up & operating late 2013 the area will lift again, not only in value but in the demand for young families wanting to secure a highly sought after bit of Real Estate under $450,000. With talk of Sofia's being up for sale, it would be fantastic if the local Pub was bought out & turned into apartments or something else substantial for the area. This would be in my opinion the only low side to this fantastic family suburbs as since the pub re-opened a few years ago Sofia's attract alot of young ibsoiles from out of the area that lack respect for the area after the pub is closed of a Friday & Saturday night. Overall a great place to live, bring children up & enjoy the areas facilities that are on offer.

Great Access to freeway, quiet and Freindly neighbourhood with a mixture of medium priced homes, right up to Million dollar mansions!! Prestigious pockets to keep an eye on, Waterstone Hill and now Hawkestowe. The valley, lakes in the Waterstone Hill estate, and the effort into the building of quality homes there make this place a dream to live in. Streets to keep an eye on are Vista Way with homes right on the lakes, and Meridian Drive, the Million Dollar Mile. Great Schools, and safe to raise a family, without the huge mortgage.....for now:)
