"Love Spotty!"

Talk about a hidden gem! 15 minutes from the city, shops of all kinds in easy reach, close to multiple beaches and not overrun by apartment buildings.

"Spotswood"

Tucked away in the shadow of one of Australia's most iconic bridges, the West Gate Bridge, and just a short trip from the CBD, Spotswood is an inner-west suburb that's home to Science Works Museum, the Donald McLean Reserve, numerous sporting and community groups and the new addition of Grazeland’s.
In my opinion it’s Melbourne’s best keep secret of the Inner West. Spotswood delivers village charm, an array of speciality shops, wine bars and the best bakery in town, Candy. The ques get so long to buy their homemade bread expect to wait 30 minutes in the que.
My adult children were bought up in Spotswood from their teenage years. Public transport was always easy to access for universities and the night life Melbourne CBD has to offer.
Spotswood has that industrial feel. Old warehouses have been converted by the artistic kind. The suburb is home to many artists, brewery makers and furniture makers. I had my dining table made from a fabulous furniture maker who learnt his trade in Denmark.

"Very close to the Westgate Bridge!"

Spotswood is a small, trendy suburb located very close to the city and unfortunately the docks too. The Westgate bridge runs pretty much over the suburb meaning easy access to the other side of the Melbourne. Only a few stops from the city via the train you're never too far from anything.

"Spotswood, A M A Z I N G !!!!!!"

The neighbourly spirit is fantastic, Spotswood is a cute and quiet little pocket, with Spotswood train station, Hudsons rd shops, 5 min drive into the Yarraville village, 5 min drive to Williamstown beach and 7 km from Melbourne’s ever growing city. Capital growth is continuously growing. Short walk to Vernon st shops in south kingsville which is fantastic for eating out. Public transport options are great, the schools are fantastic, my son attends St Margret Marys in spotswood and its a fantastic place.
Looking for a great place to live, look no further!

Rentals in Spotswood

"Expensive but very close to the city"

I lived in Spotswood for a few years until very recently; it was lovely and really close to the city although very industrial. In that time the price of real estate around me rocketed through the roof and I'm not sure that it would really represent very good value for money any longer. I lived in a small residential pocket of Spotswood close to the station and although there were very few shops around (on Hudsons road) the mini supermarket in the main street had a big variety of things and was really quite cheap (especially the liquor) and the owners were really friendly. There were lots of council parks around and the train station is very handy, only minutes to Footscray or the city and I never had a problem with car parking.

I'm sorry to say there was a lot that I didn't like in the end. My house was opposite a factory and there was noise and dust day and night; one of my neighbours once told me the factory could do whatever they liked at whatever hour they liked because of the industrial zoning. There was a large boarding house nearby situated in an old pub and unfortunately there was a lot of crime and begging associated with that - the police were often there. Hudsons road is really a fairly small residential street and yet there are huge trucks day and night going to and from the Owens Illinois glass plant. The real disappointment was the accelerating prices; both rents and house prices doubled in the few years that I was there and yet nothing really happened in that time to improve the amenity of the place - in the end I decided that I would be better off in the East where prices were (by then) almost the same.

Great for

  • Lots of parks and public transport
  • Close to the Westgate

Not great for

  • Noisy, dusty. Lots of truck traffic.

Thanks for the detailed review. I'm looking at moving off of Hudson Rd, but sort of close to the Visy Glass warehouse. Did you live directly on Hudson or off of it and was the noise unbearable? Really hoping i'm far enough away to not hear too much :)

"Charming Spotswood"

My partner and I have lived in Spotswood for 2 years and love it. We previously rented in South Yarra which we loved but the traffic was awful. Spotswood is quaint and quiet almost like a country town, but still only 10mins into the city. Spotswood is nicely positioned between Yarraville and Williamstown without the same price tag. Lots of period homes on bigger blocks than Yarraville. The shopping strip on Hudsons Rd is only small but has 3 good cafes, take away food and a post office/newsagents. There are also plans to build a Safeway and Aldi supermarkets and medical center on Melbourne rd, near the primary school. We are extremely happy living here.

Hi,

We recently bought into Spotswood and I am interested to find out more about this Safeway on Melbourne road.

Where did you read this?

StuC

It was in the local paper a while back. You can read the article here: http://hobsons-bay-leader.whereilive.com.au/news/story/spotswood-wakes/

I am not certain if it is a Safeway but it is certainly an Aldi and a large chain supermarket, also apartments and a medical center. Plans are at town planning stage as far as I am aware.

greenerliving

I live near by. We've recently received letters from council giving us opportunity to oppose if we feel the need to as it will effect our property being so close by. There will also be apartments on top of shops if they are still going ahead with it. We'd much rather a shopping centre with apartments than slumping warehouses though this will bring more traffic to our little area. However, we have no idea when this will be completed.

StuC

We live nearby also. We are the same a supermarket would be convenient and apartments much nicer to see than an empty warehouse, but realise it will bring more traffic to spotswood which is currently very quiet. The shopping center in Yarraville doesnt seem to create a lot of traffic so hoping this proposal would be the same. Also hoping the supermarket is open no later than midnight. I have no idea either when this will be complete.

"LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION"

I didnt realise how good the location is until I moved to Altona North last week. I lived on The Avenue opposite Spotswood FC. The park/bbq is so handy on the weekends with friends over kicking the footy and having a snag, the beach is 5min away great for those hot days/nights, and getting to work in the city was so quick driving over the Westgate I had so much extra time to sleep in also the people are so friendly all neighbours were so nice. Miss it sooooo much have to move back when my tenancy is up.
