Where is a great place to live for young professionals?

He is at the Caulfield Campus.

If you're not planning on not having a car and your boyfriend is studying at Monash Caulfield I would recommend renting an apartment somewhere along the Pakenham train line in the inner suburbs so you can get around easily.

The best places to be for young professionals in my opinion are:

1. Malvern- A leafy suburb with tree lined streets with a village like atmosphere. Has good parks and great cafes, restaurants and shops along Glenferrie Road. It's a 20 min train ride to the CBD and 7 mins to Caulfield station. Average 2 bedroom apartment rent is $555. http://www.homely.com.au/malvern-stonnington-melbourne-greater-victoria

2. South Yarra- a more cosmopolitan bustling area with great nightlife, cinemas, gyms, good public transport (only 10 mins train ride to the city), great shopping and restaurants on Chapel street. 3. St Kilda- This one isn't on the Pakenham train line but it has trams that run to Caulfield down Balaclava Road which takes about 20 mins and is a 15 min train ride from the city. This bayside suburb has great nightlife, St Kilda Beach, Luna Park, parks, live music, great restaurants and cafes. If you wanted to look at a couple of cheaper options Caulfield South has an average rental price of about $475 for 2 bedrooms and Carnegie is cheaper again with an average of $450.
Both are good for public transport and close to the Caulfield campus as well as being great for shops and restaurants :)
You could also have a look in the suburb reviews to see what other people have said about these areas.
As for utilities, you can compare prices and make sure you get the best deal:

Elwood/ Stkilda are "feel good" areas. You Both will be pleased living close to the water and enjoy StKilda Bottanical Gardens, Grocery Stores close by, absolutely jaw dropping tree lined streets, easy access to the beach, restaurants and huge green grass areas to sit and read your favourite books.

Prahran is really close to everything without being in the thick of it. I find there are reasonably priced rentals here and it’s good for young damilies
