"I LOVE living in Dee Why"

❤️ I love that I don’t need to use my car on the weekend; there are 4 supermarkets, 3 kids playgrounds, beach, 2 parks, 3 bush walks, a bike track all within 5 minutes walk of the front door...oh and a bus stop across the road!
❤️ I love that I can hear the waves crashing as I lay in bed at night.
❤️ I love that I can walk home after dinner; there are about 30 restaurants about 100 meters away!

"Gem of Northern Beaches"

Dee why is beautiful, you will fall in love with the beach at first sight. It is an affordable gem of Northern Beaches while still having high property values and being in constant demand due to the beach lifestyle it offers. It is also only 30-50 mins from the heart of the CBD, yet it feels like a holiday getaway. Highly recommend to all that want affordable, close to city, safe, family friendly areas with a beach slice of paradise right at their dorstep!

"Affordable beach life"

I lived here in previous years and moved back a year & a half ago.
It has affordable beach location apartments which is predominantly popular with young families & professionals & everyone in between.
It’s a beautiful area on the beach side when you get to the front there are restaurants & bars, now the area has been redeveloped towards Pittwater Road side I can see that the area will continue to improve.
It’s only half hour on the express bus to the city before 7am and circa 45-50 min after this time.

The down sides are: too many apartments have recently just been built which is crowding this once quite area increasing the traffic along with bus queues.
The place is looking more modern, however, starting to look ugly like most high rise areas. It’s annoying how builders are allowed to build so high and so many concrete blocks - as if anyone who has the option would want to live in a giant complex with thousands of others 😡 #greedybuilders

Crime: certainly safer than for example the West as no shootings etc, but I did get my meal delivery stolen the other night 5 min after it was dropped off. Also a lot of theft of motorcycles including in secure apartment buildings & there are photos of female post thieves in most apartment post rooms.

Overall: nice area with higher theft rates but low other typical crimes.
Close to the beach, shops, restaurants, bars & gyms.
Good for families if you don’t mind apartment living and having thousands of others sometimes in the same complex.
More affordable than most northern beaches suburbs and on a fast bus lane.

"Very happy"

Very happy with my business being on location in the area. I find that it's rather quiet, and it's nice to be near the sea. There are just the right amount of shops nearby and I reckon that the residential options here are sufficient if you're a single or if you're a family or if you're a pensioner. You should be able to find something that suits your taste here and in your budget too.

"The Beaches Booming Suburb"

I have been living in Dee Why for over a year now and have lived on the beaches my whole life. Once considered a "poorer" suburb on Sydney's Northern Beaches, a mix of government / council development and private property development has slowly turned Dee Why into a beautiful and sort after suburb with prices quickly rising over the past 5 years in particular.

Dee Why is predominantly made up of unit blocks, parks, great restaurants and scattered shopping centers. Dee Why beach is nothing short of beautiful and the restaurants lining the main strip are some of the best Sydney has to offer.

My partner and I live to the rear of Dee Why just off Fisher Rd and are extremely happy with the location. There is a real community feel in our street and we are central to everything the Beaches have to offer.

The New B-Line in Dee Why main has made traveling to the city or anywhere along the beaches easier than ever, and there are many busses servicing other areas such as Chatswood and Frenchs Forest.

"Get in Now!"

Just bought a great 2 bedroom unit here after carefully watching the Northern Beaches market and I couldn't be happier. This place is going to boom! Dee Why has in my opinion one of the better beaches and foreshore of the Northern Beaches, it has really good shopping, cafe's and public spaces. Dee Why has traditionally been seen as the lower class area of the beaches due to formally having housing commission and some undesirables. The new influx of young professionals and young families has transformed this area completely. Gentrification. These are not the main reasons I have invested here. The main reasons I bought here is for the potential. Check out the Dee Why Masterplan and the Northern Beaches transport upgrades as well as the new Northern Beaches hospital. Dee Why Centre is going to be transformed by Waringah council and the approved designs have already won some major awards. Dee Why is going to become a wonderful place to live with new public spaces and retail precinct. The roads to the city are scheduled to be widened and upgraded to ease congestion to the city and to Chatswood and the new Northern Beaches hospital is going to be of world class standard. Dee Why is going to become the heart of the Northern Beaches and the prices are unbelievably affordable but they won't be for long! I highly recommend the older style unit blocks on the 'beach' side of Pittwater Rd. Get in before its too late!

  • The beach!

Are you able to please advise where I can find the plans for the new retail hub you mentioned is going up across from Kingswood station? I've googled it but can't find anything at all. Many thanks

BenA

Sure there is a development already sold out on the corner of Great Western Highway and The Northern Road linking onto the hospital precinct. This is due for completion in 2017. The development directly across from Kingswood station has just been released to the public now. PRD are looking after it, here is a link http://www.realestate.com.au/property-apartment-nsw-kingswood-119785627 . You might need to paste the link in your search box. Read all the way down and it details a lot of the development work for Kingswood in the not too distant future. Good Luck!

"On the rise....."

My 4 head family moved to the Northern Beaches (after spending 2 years in the Eastern Suburbs....big mistake!) and have never looked back. Our first stop was North Curl Curl and although the area was nice, we lived on Abbott Road which is a traffic nightmare, particularly during weekends with the netballers (nothing against them....there's just millions of them there). Suffice to say, it was not a peaceful experience, but NCC is in general very nice. We moved to DY after buying a place up on the hill (Victor Rd) and it's so peaceful and beautiful here, we cannot believe more people haven't discovered it, but are grateful for that fact, otherwise, we couldn't have afforded it. I have not witnessed any of the violence that has been mentioned here, and if we're honest, it can happen anywhere. I have witnessed and heard even more acts of violence in the Eastern Suburbs (think Bra Boys), and would never go back there, even for a coffee in the middle of the day. North Balgowlah even can be rough, if you're unlucky enough to have your place crashed by a bunch of drunk teenagers! And don't even ask about Manly.
Shopping in and around DY is great.....I always say: If you can't find it in DY, you'll find it in Brookvale. If you can't find it there, it's not worth having! DY is not perfect though. The trip into the city isn't fun....but the further north you go, it get's even worse. All the express buses in the world won't help the fact there is only one bus lane.....and if there is a slow coach, every bus suffers. It really is time for a sensible, and not politically driven update to the bus schedule. I will however note that due to Warringah and Pittwater Road meeting at DY, it's easy to take alternate routes to the city, Chatswood, St Ives etc. That's handy!
If you want an expensive and pretentious area, try Freshwater.....but you'll need to have a lot of money and car to get to any amenities. If you want expensive tourist traps, try Manly. If you want cheap, try Warriewood (but not saying that's bad). IF you want value for money in a growing area, try DY.

"Great for the beach but needs improvment"

In my short experience of living in Dee Why I have been very happy being so close to the beach for the reason that I love surfing. There are heaps of shops nearby and plenty of restaurants and eateries within walking distance. I guess what disappoints me the most is the amount of 'ferals/bogans' still living in the area causing the occasional problems. I am unfortunately situated right next door to a government housing building which has resulted in loss of possessions due to crime generated from the occupants. Safety is a bit of a concern as the weekend nights see a lot of these people roaming the streets looking for trouble. With a bit of luck in a few more years the government will have re-positioned many of these people and will allow dee why to flourish into a wonderful place to live. Having said this Dee Why in general is already a good place to live but for such a good location I feel it has a bit of a way to go before I'd call it one of the best places to live.

Cheers

"Pacific Parade"

I lived in Dee Why for a year in 2011 and I honestly couldn't wait to move out of there when my lease was up. It's really sad but there's a lot of families living in those one and two bedroom flats. I lived in a one bedroom block and the majority of units had a couple with their child living in them. Below me there was a guy that was living with his parents and a small child. Next door was a block of two bedders and many had couples with two or three children living in them. I heard some awful domestic fights like I've never heard anywhere else and I hope I never hear again. Most of the people living there seemed pretty stressed and were always quick to point out that they were only living here until they could afford something better. Dee Why beach is beautiful but sadly it disappeared from April until September as even at the lowest tide you'd be lucky to have a strip of beach one metre deep along most of the beach. I'm not sure if this happens every year though? There is also a notable amount of violent crime there involving young guys. In the last week that I was living there, I went to grab something from Woolworths at 6pm on a weeknight and out the front of the store there was a young guy, attended to by paramedics, lying in a massive pool of his own blood. Anyway, I didn't live on the Northern Beaches long enough to understand why this has happened to Dee Why, but it surely has happened and I hope they figure out how to fix it.

Not great for

  • Ghetto for people who can't afford decent housing on the Northern Beaches

Im sorry you had this experience.
Its like a little village where you know your butcher, florist, Baker.
The beach is beautiful.
Maybe you just lived in the wrong apartment block as from your comments you couldnt possibly know how the whole area is & your information isnt supported by statistics.

"My favourite place in the world"

My family settled in the area after the end of World War 1. There have been many changes, some not so good. The many ugly home units have spoiled a once beautiful place. The new units are more attractive but I am sad to see so many of the old homes being knocked down. I would still rather live in Dee Why than anywhere else. I have lived in the Southern Highlands for 16 years and can't wait to get away from there and back to the Northern Beaches! There is no comparison.

"great metropolitan living on northern beaches"

Dee Why is a great place to live. It has arguably some of the best resteraunts and cafes on the whole of the northern beaches. Dee Why also has arguably one of the nicest beachfronts on the northern beaches aswell. It is great for surfing the beach breaks regulary have good banks and Dee Why point is a world class wave on its day (not for beginners!).

It has many parks, sporting fields and a lagoon so there is plenty of recreational options available. Heaps of local and nearby sport clubs including surf club, rugby union, cricket, soccer, rugby league, netball and baseball.

Dee Why has been let down by previous warringah councillors preceeding over the area and as a result low rise blocks of apartments dominate the suburb. This development has provided affordable property (when compared to other suburbs on the northern beaches) and is a popular suburb for first home buyers and young singles and couples entering the expensive area.

There is a new town centre proposed for Dee Why which has had planning approval. This also includes an upgrade of the main bus terminal and improved traffic flow through the main retail precinct. I think Dee Why will only become more desirable in the future.

"Dee Why – high density dormitory"

Dee Why is a suburb of Sydney 18 kilometres north of the CBD in the local government area of the Warringah Council but still considered to be in the Northern beaches district of Sydney. Bounded on the north by Collaroy, the east by the Pacific Ocean, the south by Curl Curl and Brookvale and to the west by Cromer, Narraweena and Beacon Hill. The population in 2006 was 17,272 with 17.2% under 18 and 15.2% over 60. With over 60% of dwellings being high density and over 40% of the accommodation rented Dee Why would easily qualify as a dormitory suburb.

The Dee Why Lagoon Reserve is 77 ha of low lying land that is very significant to migratory birds and is part of an agreement between Aust, Japan and China. The lagoon covers 30 Ha and is tidal with the outlet sometimes open and at other times closed by a sand bar. It also is host to a multitude of mosquitoes who are very friendly and not afraid of an intimate relationship with any stray human.

It has been reported in 2008 that Brush turkeys are returning to the area. Apparently one was seen making his nest of grass and sticks on somebody's front lawn. This is a far call from the forest.

"Nice suburb on the Northern Beaches"

Dee Why is a suburb located in the Northern Beaches region of Sydney. It is famous for Dee Why Beach and it's close proximity to Curl Curl and Collaroy. During peak hours, the commute to the city can sometimes take up to an hour because of the congestion of Pittwater Road. The only form of public transport around the Northern Beaches area are public buses and during peak hours, these buses run on T-ways.

Urbanisation has resulted in more residential apartments being built in Dee Why. Along the beach strip of Dee Why, there are many of these apartments. Under the apartments are shops, cafes and restaurants that serve the many tourists and locals around the area. Another really nice place in Dee Why will have to be the RSL. It is not like your usual old looking RSL that is in need of a renovation. Dee Why RSL is brand new looking with many flat screen televisions offering many different channels of sports. Within the RSL, you can find an Asian restaurant, a bistro, a couple of cafes and a bar. Dee Why is recommended for anyone who likes being close to the beach but does not mind the commute to the city and the high cost of living around this part of Sydney.

Over 5 years I'd say the demographic seems to have noticeably changed for the better . Great opportunities for all beach / sea related sports and some good pockets of nature . Although some bemoan the proliferation of apartments , the suburb still has a mostly leafy feel . It's possible to walk to all amenities , and the beach and is on a main bus route to city . Dee Why has a great array of cafes , restaurants etc and essential services . Basically most of Dee Why is a fantastic place to live . Even parts of the Pittwater throughfare are aesthetically much improved over the last few years .
However , it's extraordinary that with a police station a stone's throw away the main bus stop and Council Chambers , this part has been allowed to degenerate (even further) into a urine stinking , graffitti plastered mess that is also fairly dangerous . It will continue to be all of the above unless the vacant buildings are replaced and made useful . Council is floundering with lack of vision or they are simply inept - but with so much room for improvement , the only way for the suburb as a whole , is up .
