"A great place to live in the heart of Brisbane"

Close to beautiful parks, major sporting facilities, great schools, universities, major hospitals, leash-free areas, weekend street markets within walking distance and a fabulous sense of community if you want to get out and socialise with the neighbours. Have lived in the area as a professional couple and now as a family for 15 years. A lovely little leafy pocket surrounded by major roads that can lead you to anywhere you want to go, usually without traffic delays.

Great for

  • Location to city centre and all important facilities
  • Low house turnover - people move in and stay forever
  • Within the catchment area for one of Brisbane's leading public schools and within walking distance of top private schools

Not great for

  • High rental area for international students which equates to little investment in streetscape by BBC
  • Wide straight streets used to rat-run during peak-hour
  • Queenslanders being replaced by high-density unit developments

Looking for a home in Herston?

"The greenspace, healthcare, academia & public transit oriented inner city suburb"

Pros:
Proximity to work for many health and academia employees, also fairly convenient to CBD for inner city workers on public transport, scooter, cycle
Proximity to Northern Busway, and future high frequency Brisbane Metro with Herston, and RBWH stops
Proximity to Brisbane airport, about 10-15mins, with 2 sets of lights if go via the Airport Link tunnel
Proximity to large hospital facilities, emergency department, also private medicine clinics on Butterfield st
Large areas of greenspaces, including Victoria Park and the connected very large greenspace corridor along Breakfast Creek including Ballymore, Rasey, Downey Parks, with lots of sports activities for adults and children
Close proximity to Northey St markets, city farm
Several decently priced cafes, eateries within/adjacent to RBWH, also at Victoria Park
Fairly walkable foot paths with generally adequate shading by trees, also majority of streets are well paved, much easier to walk on vs some inner city suburbs that roads are either too narrow or have to walk on grass, or suburbs that are somewhat too hilly to walk easily
2 hour street parking and dedicated 30min parking, also ability to get visitor parking permits do make it relatively easy for our visitors to get parking, quite decent for inner city suburb. Also streets are much wider than many inner city suburbs
Walkable, scooterable or public transportable to Fortitude Valley, new Bowen Hills eatery precinct, RNA showground precinct
Future public transport options of Brisbane Metro, and Cross River Rail
Future infrastructure projects, Herston Quarter, RNA showground further development, Bowen Hills
Predominantly still has traditional character overlay to maintain character homes
Close to many highly ranked private schools, also catchment public school is highly rated.

Cons:
Lack of as many eateries and cafes on the weekends, due to them catering mostly for health precinct staff.
Several streets in flood zones
Some streets, eg Butterfield St, Herston Rd can get busy with rat running traffic
RBWH helicopters can be very loud for some that are closeby, can occur at any time of the day and night

"Perfect combination of access to all and quietness in a green neighbourhood"

After decades of living in Indooroopilly and Taringa, we have moved to Herston and I wish we had done this years ago. I can't believe how accessible the city, airport, medical services, shops, schools etc are. The roads are wide, the trees mature, and the houses have style. We live in a quiet spot near to the creek, parks, dog parks, great coffee place (Gia) and easy access to the hospital which has interesting shops, post office and a food court. Our house is on one of the many hills of the suburb so we have a great outlook, day and night. We are very happy here and will probably not move from this suburb. It is a well kept secret which adds to its charm. As there seems to be a low turnover of houses, the neighbours are friendly, inclusive and interesting.

Great for

  • Wide roads with mature trees
  • Little traffic
  • Location to city centre and all important facilities
  • Low house turnover - people move in and stay forever
  • Within the catchment area for one of Brisbane's leading public schools and within walking distance of top private schools

"A nice Suburb in Brisbane"

A great suburb not far from central CBD but still with an outer city feel. Close to the Royal Children's Brisbane Hospital for students or patients.

"Inner city secret"

I have lived and worked in Herston for over ten years and think it is a great suburb. Within 2.5 km from the city, easy transport in and out it is ideal for those that work at Herston or the CIty.

What I love most about Herston though is that although you are still close to the city and all the amenities that you need it still have a quiet suburban feel with plenty of green space.

I love living here and will continue to do so for a long period

"I grew out of Herston"

I lived in the area for 18 yeras and thought I loved it because of the parks and how close it was to the city. But now I have moved on and don't miss the traffic and constant construction work. Sorry to say but for me the suburb is being crushed by progress and is nothing it was like years ago. I think their are similar suburbs that are better and of a similar price.
I now live the sea change in a bay side suburb where I have a beach out front and can still catch a train to the city. I have changed my thinking of what lifestyle is, now that I have move away from progress. If you are new to the area you will not worry about what write
