"Dirty, extremely dangerous even during the day."
I was a resident in this area (living private), and I can’t even begin to tell you the things I’ve witnessed during my two years in this suburb. First and for most, it’s a small suburb so it’s very basic in the sense you have a medical practitioner, a small Woolworths, a small bank, a great bakery I highly recommend), a pharmacy, and a small line of culturally acquired foods that stem from Sri Lanka.
The streets are filled with dirty trash, and there very minimal parking/squashed road side. The units and streets surrounding are normally very quiet.
Where to begin, well just a caution you do not want to enter this suburb. It’s full of drug addicts, prostitution, drug dealing, break ins (including the unit I resides in), I’ve had creepy men follow me inside their cars, (early evening), more then two occasions, I’ve been racially abused, I’ve had numerous times witnessed especially by the station young adults, even my age), approach me to target me and verbally abuse me to the point I’m scared to walk anywhere, I’ve been threatened (out of the blue), because you cannot look anyone in the eye in this suburb or maybe you will cross paths with someone who is not a good person and they do not care who you are because believe me they will pick their targets.
One time I even recall walking home with my work uniform, a stolen car full of young adults stopped on the side of the road next to me and the individual made threats towards me to even kill me with a knife only because I glanced towards them while they were screaming out the window possibly on substances. I was so lucky that early evening an older man passed by me so it lead these individuals to scatter. I ran home effortlessly stacking.
The other side of Penndle Hill is no better. A dirty pub with old people, a few run down open brothels, more drug crime, and a tiny 7/11 situated by the main road (where I’ve also encountered on a few occasions dangerous people in the car park).
Another downfall is the train lines are very slow as they are limited, so to reach the city it’s advised to catch an express from parramatta.
I don’t know much else to say, I was miserable and extremely bored in this suburb. The pub is really not suited for young people and it’s just to dangerous to catch the trains during the evening to to out. Even the restaurants are poor quality, and there is far better culturally inclusive foods in the CBD. There is no police station despite such high crime, the nearest police station is a ten minute drive situated one suburb down in Merrylands.)
Now im relocated in the City, in Chippendale my life has improved drastically. My mental health is better, my lifestyle, and my safety. You do not have to take my advice, I’m only a very young adult, but I don’t recommend this suburb to any single females. Or maybe even families to be honest.
I couldn’t be happier to never return to this place. Plus, it’s to pricy. Suburbs I recommend instead that are far better.

"It's okay"
Pendle Hill has gone through a massive demographic change in the last 20 years. There is now a large sri lankan and indian community, and that is a good thing. Before, it was not a safe area - to put bluntly , it was simply a place you wouldn't walk alone by yourself after 6pm unless you want to be mugged by the derros who lived in the HC and flats near Civic Park.
The Girraween Public school (primary) seems to also have benefited from the socio-economic changes. It used to be a place with racist white bullies (including the teachers), but how the tides have turned. White children would be the minority at the school now. The school results are also much better apparently. Needless to say, there are still problems with this area for sure. There are still housing commission bogans around, generally being annoying wastes of oxygen. Still... if I compare Pendle Hill to what it used to be, it's an improvement.
"Peaceful & Convenient without the crazy price tag"
Glad I found Pendle Hill!

My neighbours are friendly, hardworking professionals and are very peaceful people.
Fantastic mobile reception.
I’ve got my super fast Nbn connection.
Never had problems with anything I need.

"Was O.K. back in 2008-2010, would avoid now (2016)."
I can tell you in detail about this suburb with authority having lived here for so long.
When I first moved in back in 2008, the suburb was a big improvement on my previous location of Fairfield (not really a compliment, or a place that's hard to top...)
and I relished how quiet the suburb was, the lack of noise & how it had more trees.
It still had a lot missing, but I was much happier in Pendle Hill in comparison to other suburbs in Western Sydney that were a lot worse at that time. (the time is important to note as the suburb has changed after 5-7 years or so quite dramatically)
I can understand the positive reviews from a few years ago, but the place gets worse every year, and needs constant council workers to keep it clean & police regularly have to visit the rental blocks.
The people constantly leave litter on the streets, and the main streets are filthy--even after rigorous council cleaning.
The rubbish & lack of care for the environment is not even the worse part.--so if being surrounded by people who literally throw rubbish around your home isn't bad enough, please read on about safety.
A lady living in my block was attacked by four men. I have personally been followed a number of times, and other women living there report being followed in cars at night. It's not a rare thing here, and it's a place you will never feel safe or secure in as a female.
Most have moved, or planning to move. The reason for so many "for lease" signs around the suburb is because of the amount of people literally fed up with the place & leaving for greener pastures.
It's not a safe place for women, and most of the people living there are 30-something year old men.
The only nice parts of town is near a small part near the shops, where there is a playground where families play with their kids during daylight hours. That is quite sweet, but even then the part is only a few meters wide, so these decent folk have only a very limited grass space to work with.
The other compliment would be the fact there are plenty of buses & trains for you to escape in.
However literally a street away from this happy & idyllic scene, you can find people spitting on the ground, staring blatantly at women, and throwing rubbish everywhere.
It's truly not the type of place I'd recommend, even if you are broke, there are poor areas that are miles above this place.
Look elsewhere for a place with a better community of respectful & cleaner inhabitants.
Great for
- Nice staff at train station
- A bank PLUS all major ATM's
- Local PO
Not great for
- Litterbugs & rubbish everywhere
- Unsafe for women
- Lots of cockroaches
I agree completely that it is not safe for women. Having lived in Singapore and Hong Kong for 5 years I was shocked when I returned to Australia just how unsafe it is to be a women...But I digress - I lived in Pendle Hill in my teen years and I have experienced everything you have mentioned in regards to the treatment of women.
I think all the train stations need an upgrade!
I have lived here for10 years and I love it. I raised my 3 boys and they commute on trains to uni, to work and its a great. I have never seen piles of rubbish anywhere just the occasional cigarette but or so. It is close to Parramatta, Blacktown, and easy drive to the city on the new M4. It is close to Westmead Hospital a major hospital in Western Sydney. I walk to the shops post office and have had no issues. It is also has a great meat and chicken factory just amazing'
