"My favourite suburb of all - Templestowe"

I have lived in Templestowe most of my life, and it's the one place I will always call home. I think the best part about Templestowe is the peace and tranquility (cliche i know). Some people think Templestowe is out in the sticks, but I disagree. There aren't cows and farm animals on every block...in fact there are large family style homes, very family friendly streets and a park on every corner.

Shopping is actually quite good as well. The Pines shopping center on the corner of Reynolds and Blackburn road has been renvated a lot over the past couple of years...and I'm always up there eating Nando's or getting a DVD up at VideoEzy (yay they have Blu Ray now!!). Also, Doncaster Shopping town is now almost complete, and that is only a 5 minutes drive away. It's getting a David Jones, already has a JB-HIFI and a fantastic food court with China Bar and a lot of boutique shops.

There is so much to be said about Templestowe...from the great parks, to large family style homes...but one of the best parts of Templestowe is the value for money. Many people see it as a great alternative to Toorak, Brighton or Canterbury. The reason for this is you get amazing value for money in Templestowe. You can buy a 3 million dollar mansion in Templestowe, 120 Squares, Tennis court, indoor pool etc...while 3 Million dollars in Canterbury will buy you a 45 square home, with a small backyard. Templestowe is also accessed by the eastern freeway, so being close to city becomes irrelevant when you can be in the city in 20 minutes.

This is a suburb I can't recommend enough. It's the place I call home, and I recommend you call it home too.
Pros
  • Great parks - Westerfolds, Ruffey Lake
  • Great shopping - Doncaster Shoppingtown, Pines
  • Large blocks - quarter acre, acre sizes
Cons
  • Poor nightlife options
  • Far away from the CBD
  • Public transport not as good as other suburbs

"Templestowe has seen better years."

Templestowe was a great place when it was vibrant with new houses being built in the estates of the 1970 -1980's. However, it is also very dated now and doesn't really cater to school access very well. If you want a private education you need to go OUT of the area and the transport is limited, the public schools are still scattered around but for such a high level of confidence in how brilliant the suburb should perform and the money that should create a high expectation the schools don't perform as well as one would think. Let's face it the schools are dependant on the government in the area so unless they are a priority then the performance will be low. Also there's a strong sense of entitlement among young people and as a result they don't push themselves as they think it will all land on their lap out of thin air some day. I don't think Templestowe has grown much from it's beginning's, it's still the same as it was some 40 years ago. It needs a train station, it has always needed a train station. The price to house radio is over stated IMHO, and the traffic so much worse. The houses were once the cream of the crop and everyone from suburbs elsewhere used to be a gasp at their size. But they aren't looking like that these days as they really tell a story of a time past. Is it still an exciting place? Well, was it ever an exciting place? Upon reflection, not really, it never was that exciting, the best thing about Templestowe was the friendships formed. But it was also a place where many people lost themselves too. I don't remember to many times that I could say that the place really inspired me, which is probably the reason why so many of us aspired to rise above our peers. We wanted to do so, so that we could feel as though we had moved above and beyond the restrictions of the suburb. The suburb is still a car reliant suburb with an average vibe. But it is still Melbourne's East and that says something. The problem with Melbourne's East is that it's too much about individual suburbs and should be more about the whole region thereby integrating the suburbs to unify and share resources, including more public works to link the whole East. There was also a lot of deception that went on in Templestowe and had some very dangerous elements once, including guns and shootings, Karmein Chan a poor 13 yr. old girl that was a victim of foul play and who could forget Mr Cruel? We were terrified by the events. So there has been a very high rate of crime in the area and that hasn't got much better. At one point for a couple of years the Westfield Shopping Town was traversed by up to 400 youths being the Euro Boys and the Skips (Australians). Wild parties, drugs, you name it! These days, I do wonder if the stigma of those old days and the ghost's of the past will come back to visit as these things sometimes come full circle and the darker claimed areas re-emerge. Hard to say... But for those living in Templestowe today it is the past, and that said the suburb is free of government housing which is a plus! But if it was a choice between the old days of ducking at a car backfire in Templestowe thinking it was a gunshot or a few feral bogans with uneducated insults, it would be hard to choose. Again, all areas have their morons but as a suburb Templestowe is quite nice but not as desirable as some others. Once you've been outside of an area for long enough you then realise what you liked and what you didn't, perspective I guess. I don't miss Templestowe as much as I would like. I really should be quite grateful and feel privileged, but as the saying goes. 'Cash doesn't buy class'. So would I want to live in Templestowe today, probably not, but I do have my eye's on other suburbs nearby. If you are a car lover and like the 1970's retro look that Templestowe provides then it is a great fit, it also has a number of very good facilities here and there, close to the Yarra River in some parts also, some isolated shops and 'Shoppingtown'. But you must travel and you must have a car to utilise the area conveniently. I like the place but I don't like it enough. But that's just my opinion and not a reflection on the current residents and owners in the area. Now more than ever I really have narrowed down what suburbs are the gold trophies. Templestowe isn't in my top 10, but may come in at say 16th or 19th place. High, but not high enough. Still one of the better ones if you are outside of the organised crime circles, ignorance is bliss. The suburb holds it's price very well, but not in the same league as some other areas. The main thing is, price aside, being happy is the number one goal. Templestowe has reasonably clean air and good shopping. So all in all not too bad. I'm thinking I should pay another visit to the old areas around Templestowe and see if I have a renewed sense of ownership. Will write a follow-up if I have a WOW factor. Probably start around King St and work my way down to the Yarra River. Admire the high voltage power lines that I used to ride my motorbike under and some of the skateboard challenges down 'The Grange and the point of no return 'Chippendale Court' starting around 'Castlewood place' it was a real speed thrill and a choice between victory, terror and the speed wobbles. I wonder if the Milk Bar is still at Mossdale Crt and the Public Telephone Box? Not likely?

"Fantastic for families, clean air, multi-cultural and friendly"

Templestowe is one of Melbourne's hidden gems in terms of providing lots of space at realistic prices within reasonable reach of the Melbourne CBD.

Blocks range from the standard quarter acre up to the large acre blocks providing a great lifestyle for families with kids. Yes there are the million dollar mansions but you will also find reasonably priced quarter acre properties in close proximity.

The people - a mix of Italian, Greek, Asian and Australian cultures provide a friendly tolerant environment (great mix of restaurants and take away) which highlights all the benefits that multiculturalism can bring.

Schools - there are some great primary schools, no private schools within the area with many kids commuting to Kew by bus.

Parks - spoilt with some of the largest and best facilities in Melbourne from the huge Ruffey Lake Park with it's great walking trails and playgrounds and Westerfolds Park which runs alongside the Yarra River.

Shopping - the Westfield Doncaster Shoppingtown is arguably Australia's best shopping centre with it's recent expansion, this is only a 5 minute drive. You also have the Pines Shopping Centre nearby. Numerous supermarkets also.

Downsides - only a few, lack of trains to the area mean you need to catch a bus to Shoppingtown then connect to Box Hill. Also lack of footpaths in some areas.
Pros
  • Large blocks - quarter acre, acre sizes

"Large land only a 25 minutes drive from the city"

Looking for a suburb that is located close to the city although feels like it is miles away from the hustle and bustle, Templestowe is the best choice. With gorgeous large park lands and space to build, you have the freedom of the countryside views and the option to drive 25 minutes to get to the city. This is a perfect suburb to bring your family up in with private schools and large grounds.
Doncaster shopping town is only a short drive away where you can access all your favourite shops and boutiques.

"Good for the right people"

Once described to me as 'cashed up bogans', which after 5 years I now tend to agree with. It is a good place for families, but it is expensive - and it's also quite hilly. Good luck finding a 'flat' yard.
It also has chronic over-estimating of property for auctions, probably the worst in the state.
So - if you have a property, congrats because you are probably going to make more.
If you plan to buy here, make sure there are people of the same 'culture' as you otherwise, it's not friendly or hospitable.
Yet i've lived here for 5 years because of the reasons stated by other people.
When i buy - it won't be here.

hope this helps frame Templestowe in a more balanced perspective.

"The Toorak of the South Eastern Suburbs"

I have grown up in Templestowe for most of my life! Sometimes known as the Toorak of the South Eastern Suburbs it is a very quiet and family friendly neighbourhood to live in. Close proximity to local shopping centre at Stockland The Pines and townhouses and apartments being built up the road. Short drive to the freeway which will get you in the CBD.
Very large family homes in Templestowe and some very prestigious streets with high end million dollar properties. Can be affordable in some streets.
Not much goes wrong in Templestowe, some very very nice coffee places at Templestowe Village shopping precinct, most notably, Melissa Cakes & Restaurant where I tend to spend most my evenings after work.

On a real estate point of view, there is always a demand for people wanting to live in this area! Majority of older homes in Templestowe surpass there current value. Many people want to their children to grow up in this area!

"Great Suburb"

Hi there, I agree with all the other positive comments on Templestowe.
It is a lovely suburb with beautiful green surroundings and hilly streets.
Starting to get rather pricey though.
I have a roof restoration company and often work in and pass through Templestowe.
Definately in my top 20 suburbs.

Cheers,
Phil

"Home to pictureques view."

Home to some very expensive houses, Templestowe is a very leafy suburb. Most of the people living here are professionals and managers . Templestowe holds some of the most pictureques streets with amazingly huge houses and grand mansions.
The only problem with Templestowe is transportation as there is only buses, no trains and trams. But with houses increasing every year inTemplestowe and nearing the million dollar mark( it has already hit more than a million dollar mark for the past 2 consecutive months in March and April), it is still one of the best suburbsin Melbourne. I have always been proud of Templestowe and Templestowe has always been my home!

"Leafy and serene yet established and prestige!"

How else could someone described Templestowe? It is a serene, leafy, prestigious and established area with eyecatching grand mansions in some part of Templestowe, other parts are with rare achitectual built houses on hilly pictuques streets and some modest high quality homes.I have always love Templestowe. I have started investing more than 4 houses in Templestowe and all with good return of money!!I Cool!!
Resale value is good and I predict it will reach the 1 million mark by 2011.

"Well established and Grandeur"

Templestowe is home to some of Melbourne's large and grand mansions. Driving down most of the roads in Templestowe, you will see great street presence-A mixure of prestigious and grand mansions, great modern townhouses and well-maintained manicure graden of older properties.
Though prices are a bit steep , but Templestowe is really a good investment. I have bought a house last year and sold it this year, and I got such great money! Indeed a prestige and quiet area yet near to all busy central neighbourhood such as Doncaster and Boxhill. No doubt it is still Maningham top suburb!!!

Templestowe is great. I have purchased a number of houses in Templestowe and have doubled my investment, each time in less than 5 years. CBD access via the Eastern freeway, bus transport is everywhere (smart bus). Neighbours are friendly and at our local shops and cafes we are greeted by name.
