Reviews of Towradgi, NSW

"Coastal living with access to Sydney and Wollongong"

Towradgi is a great little pocket of paradise on the northern coast of Wollongong. Comparable to Bulli or Thirroul, with easy access to a beach lifestyle, but in a quieter suburb that is still on the early part of the growth cycle. The Rock pool has just been upgraded, along with the beach Park and easy access to Wollongong's coastal bike track. Flat terrain, so it is easy to walk around and minimal car traffic as its less of a tourist destination than some of the other well-known beaches.

[ Housing ]
More and more new or renovated homes, which is modernising the look of the suburb. Average block size is about 600sqm? Its hard to gauge proper market pricing as many places have not changed hands in a long time. But, you can use similarly spec’d and sold properties up the coast for some level of reference.

[ Access/Transport ]
20min by bus or train into Wollongong central, and about the same to Uni of Wollongong. Feeling active? Just ride a bicycle into town and try the coastal cycle track.

Compared to Thirroul, you need to add another 30min to your train trip into Sydney which is not ideal. There are studies conducted on improving the train line to reduce travel time to 30 to 60 min into Sydney. Would be great if that comes to fruition, but could see demand for these coastal suburbs exploding if that happens. Might be a blessing in disguise not to have a fast train line yet…

I have to commute once a week into the Hills district of Sydney. From when we were living in South Sydney, Towradgi has extended my travel by about 30min to 45min along toll roads. Not as bad as I thought it would be…having moved 1hr20min further South of Sydney.

[ Schooling ]
Easy access to schools that are not that large, so the class sizes on average seem to be smaller than Sydney. Kids just walk or ride bikes to school. And a good selection of day care centres.

[ Amenities ]
Not a lot, but that keeps the place quiet and safe. Fairy Meadow or Corrimal are the closest with a quick 5 min drive (if that) away for grocery shopping, restaurants and cafes. Hello Darling cafe, with views of the ocean. Towradgi beach hotel, which has had annual events (prior to COVID). Towradgi Park Bowls and Recreation club next to park.

The Beach Park has been upgraded, with great outdoor equipment for kids. And the Rock Pool has also been upgraded in 2020.

I have lived here for 45 years and I love the beach the parks, the creek with its track down to the beach. The train is but 400 metres away and a bus runs past my door. The cycleway is terrific and the suburb is a stone's throw away from the CBD, as is a major hospital. The neighbours are civilised and friendly and the area is flat. Newly renovated homes and new homes are giving the suburb a facelift for the 21st century.
