Hawthorn East

"Convenient. Space is a commodity"

The upside to living here is you only need to travel about 5km maximum for any product or service you need. Even niche things. Getting onto the freeway is pretty easy. Outbound or over to the south east is straight forward, haven't tried driving inbound so can't comment. There's about three train stations in easy reach and trams. It feels pretty safe.

I'm knocking off a star because driving here is terrifying and it seems to be grid lock about 90% of the time. I suggest anyone planning to move here takes a defensive driving course first. The problem being a huge amount of cars and pedestrians at almost all hours. You constantly need to head check in about 6 directions twice before making a decision. You also can't always turn onto a main road in the direction you need and need to turn into the wrong direction turn into a side street and do a uturn (well I do this because it's a lot safer) Also be prepared for the majority of lights to not have a turn signal and to be "give way". Do whatever you can to NOT drive on Glenferrie road.

Good for people who prioritize convenience. I recommend for working proffessionals, families, fashion conscious, students.

Not good for people who like a slower pace or lots of space.

Errrhm just have to correct...the first paragraph is accurate but the last sentence is an over exaggeration. Driving is difficult sometimes due to rude drivers and at peak hours roads leading out of Melbourne, and around Camberwell experience quite long lines of traffic. Grid lock no...the traffic flows after 5-10 mins of waiting at the worst times. 90% of the time the traffic is fine. Watch out for busy Camberwell The Well shopping mall.

Disagree with hawkresident agree with TA about driving and congestion in Hawthorn East. Bad little drivers who most likely didn't learn to drive here. Lots of them!

"Convenience"

This place is ideal for shopping, restaurants, services, public transport.
Absolutely perfect for young proffessionals. It's inexpensive for the location.

I only work here but if I could secure an apartment a few blocks from the main area with secure parking I would absolutely live here.

It can be noisy and crowded. There is always people. I personally am not comfortable using public transport at night because of the some of the unsavory people.

"Good for young families and country lovers"

Ideal safe neighborhood. Suitable for retirees and young families.

Parking is fine if you know where to look.

Facilities are decent.
There is a library, an Aldi, a woolies a Coles a Kmart a hospital and a Bunnings. A number of schools. Usually almost no traffic, parks are nice.
Most restaurant staff are nice.

I do highly not recommend for young proffessionals (except young tradesmen or people who have secured local jobs) because commuting to major industrial hubs like dandenong is ridiculously time consuming and expensive. You will spend several thousand a year on Petrol. Warragul is also about a 100 minute drive from Melbourne unless you are speeding the whole way.
But if you want to raise a young family highly recommend.

"Good location, some people can be odd"

Its super easy to get to the city and Fremantle from South lake. It was quiet where I stayed (towards the east side of the suburb).

The only thing that massively put me off was whenever I walked to the shop I would see so many discarded needles on the foot paths.
