Advice on living in Melbourne

Hello, my husband and I are thinking of moving to Melbourne. We have two young children and would like some advice on what areas are ok to live in with a young family. We need a 3 bedroom plus study or a 4 bedroom house and would only have around 400,000 to spend possibly slightly more.

Thank you for your help in advance, we are just trying to get all the information together before we make a final decision.

Hi Kewarra
It depends how far from the CBD you wish to live. If you wish to live close to the CBD, in my opinion, the Western suburbs of Melbourne are the best value. A family member bought a four bedroom house in Sunshine last year for $400,000. It needs a bit of work to pretty it up, but is quite liveable. Importantly, if you are commuting, it is a short walk to the train station, where it is a 17-20 minute train journey into the CBD. If living further out from the CBD is not a concern, then I would look at (a) public transport - you might not use it now, but your kids will as they grow and not all areas of Melbourne are well serviced by public transport (b) schools and their reputations (c) location of facilities such as shopping centres, hospitals and parks (d) community - whether there is a strong community in the area so that you are made to feel welcome. Many areas have residents and ratepayers associations and their websites often give a good feel for the community.
