Where is the best place for a young family around Melbourne? Good public primary school system....
Hi, we will have a new member to our family in a few months. We just moved to Melbourne and now have to find a good place to stay for the next 5 to 7 years. We are looking at buying a house somewhere around Melbourne, with good public transport to the city cbd. Our main issue is, where to buy. Where are the best public primary schools? How can I find out the school zones so that I don't move into an area with a good school but my house is outside of the zone.... Our budget is around 550 to 600K for a 3 bedroom house.
Important for us are the things probably all are looking for:
- Security
- Good neighborhood
- Public Transport access
- Great public schools
Would be great if you can give me some advise. We look to move within the next two months. Areas we looked at so far are Essendon (very nice, on the expensive side for us I believe), Moonee Ponds, Ascot Vale, Maribyrnong, Richmond.

Richmond is very close to the city and is therefore expensive. You may have to go a little further out to afford a place. Focus on streets near the train lines.

Hi ChrisHofmann,
Here is another thread that discussed the same issue and questions you have raised. It has some great recommendations in it:

If that doesn't help you, please let me know.

Hi Chris.
I'm trying to find some good child care facilities for Melbourne. It's pretty damn hard trying to find somewhere AND get a spot in there :(
