Winthrop, WA 6150

Winthrop is a nice family suburb. A12km drive from the CBD, it has reasonably large blocks and lots (and lots) of parks - a key feature of the suburb.
Most essentials are about 3Km - Fiona Stanley Hospital is less than 3km, the river is about 3km as well and Garden City (Westfield Booragoon) is also about 3Km - so convenience is not an issue.
Part of Winthrop is in Applecross SHS; which does attract families with teenagers. But increasingly, Winthrop Primary School has been gaining recognition as an Independent Primary School with a STEM program for kids - a hidden gem.
Overall, the suburb is a little dated but many houses are now being renovated, so the overall street appeal is improving continually. The hilly Piney Lakes estate in Winthrop already rivals waterside suburbs in prices due to the scenic views and beautiful homes, but there are still some affordable areas.
Finally, it should be said that Winthrop is a safe suburb - not only by statistics but it feels safe for a family. The neighbours are very friendly and look out for each other - a very nice trait that I sorely missed in many other suburbs.

I previously lived and worked in mount pleasant however when it came to buying our next home the value was not there. We stumbled upon Winthrop and can’t believe it. It had everything you could want, shops, parks, great transport links ease of access to medical ect and the neighbourhood is super friendly. I have lived in Winthrop since 2013 and my family has been living here since the 80s. All I can say is Winthrop is one of the nicest suburbs. It is close to many high standard schools, including Winthrop Primary School which has the best teachers you could ever meet. I attended WPS for only 4 years but they were the best years of my life. Everyone is extremely smart and fun to be around and there are barely any dodgy people, mainly only the kids who went JCCA or MSHS for high school. Winthrop is an extremely academic school with loving people and great programs (sport, languages, drama etc. It has excellent catchment public high schools including Applecross SHS , Melville Senior High School and Rossmoyne SHS. WPS has lovely amenities as well and prides itself with its students.

The suburb itself is delightful, with many parks and families. There are many lovely parks inluding Piney Lakes Reserve, Robert Smith Park, Hill Park, Somerville Park and Winthrop Park/Oval which is an oval where soccer, cricket and football is played all the time. Winthrop IGA is a small shopping centre with many food shops including a chemist, Brumby's, Jesters and a cafe. If IGA is not suitable for your needs, Garden City Shopping Centre is located 5 minutes away. The people in Winthrop are very friendly and kind and there are no dodgy areas. I have not been robbed ever whilst living here (touch wood) and I have not heard much about unsociable behaviour in Winthrop. The houses are slightly outdated and on the pricier end but with a quick renovation they will be good as new. I would 10/10 recommend Winthrop and there are 3 families from my extended family living here.

In the 80s Winthrop was right up there with Booragoon, Ardross and even Mt Pleasant, houses were new and the suburb was high end. It's all tradies, lock and leave international visitors, heaps of block subdivisions, dated old housing stock now is 30 years on with poor maintenance and one green lawn in ten. The high end was reaching 1.8 million just 10 years ago and now, the top street with dated big family homes hardly fetch 1.1 as anyone with 1.2 onwards would go elsewhere! It's just heading down further, and I'd give it a miss big time.

Winthrop is a great suburb for all. It is well located suitable for people of all ages really. Nice big oval and parklands for active and passive recreation. It's only 10km as the crow fly from the Perth CBD, 2km to the beautiful Swan River, 1km to the premium Garden City Shopping Centre which is about to undergo a $750m redevelopment. With Murdoch University only 650m to the south and the Fiona Stanley Hospital right next door, you will be well looked after both academically and medically. Winthrop is located on major transport corridors serviced by Leach Highway to the north, South Street to the south, Kwinana Freeway to the east and North Lake Road to the West.

Myaree commercial hub is literally across the road from Leach Hwy, where all eatery, lifestyle showroom outlets are located. The area is located well away from the residential infill development so you don't get construction noise, trucks, and all sort of building related activities that can ruin a local streetscape and vista.

Very good suburb due to the positioning close to Murdoch uni, close to shopping centre Karrinyup and Garden City Booragoon (Booragoon development 400m soon), close to Fiona Stanley Hospital and St John of God Hospital, the train station also is the modern one, not far to Freo and CBD. Price range is affordable around 800k for a really decent size land. Good value.

So much of the younger community is pulled together by the awesome local primary school and the central and well-used local sports field. Central to every facility needed - primary school, largest Fiona Stanley hospital, local IGA and basic eateries, Garden City shopping centre, tons of other specialist shops in Myaree, Piney Lakes reserve and parklands, Fremantle to the west, Freeway to the east. What I like best is that the daily essentials are close enough for walking distance (the primary school, local shops, and local park) whilst the other busy things that generate heavy traffic are far enough yet close enough (huge hospital, shopping centre, high school, university are in next door suburbs).

A quiet suburb with surrounded by beautiful parks and recreations as well as located in the vicinity of good shopping centres, good public and private schools, Murdoch University and soon to be opened multi-billion dollar Tertiary Hospital -the Fiona Stanley Hospital in 2014. A beautiful and affordable suburb that has been well kept secret but not any longer once Fiona Stanley Hospital officially opened.

Good for students attending nearby university, other than that it is just your standard suburb nothing special, most properties here are all outdated 80s style which are plain ugly in my opinion.

Winthrop is a safe and quiet suburb and a nice place to live. Close to ammenties, great local shopping centre and has an excellent primary school. Most houses are large and built in the 80's so if buying expect it to need a facelift. Many properties (possibly rentals) have poorly maintained gardens which does detract from the area. We are a rental at present where the landlord refuses to spend any money on reticulation so there is not a lot you can do, but poor gardens are more commonplace than in surrounding suburbs. There is a large Asian population in Winthrop.

We've lived in a parkside bungalow in Winthrop for 10 years and love coming home to the sun setting over the grass and tall pines. A leafy green suburb within a few minutes drive of good eating, shopping, and the south side of the river, the kids need only step across the road to be in a huge, tree-lined park. Winthrop is a quiet and leafy place (if you avoid the main thoroughfares of Jackson and Winthrop Ave, and properties that back onto Leach Highway) with large undivided blocks, that provides better value than suburbs north of the city with equivalent housing and travel time to the CBD. The northeast corner of the suburb, overlooking and in the immediate vicinity of Piney Lakes is a much more exclusive and expensive area with larger blocks, mainly architect-designed two-storey housing, and occasional (distant and IMHO rather overpriced) views of the city.

This leafy, excellently located park side suburb with well maintained homes and gardens has all the amenities you would wish for secure family living. Be it for the old or young, Winthrop has a great community village feel with the convenience of having major shopping, excellent schools, hospitals, universities and transport at your doorstep. Being located near the freeway corridors make it easy to access the Perth CBD, the port city of Fremantle, or our iconic beaches and river. Without doubt, these attributes make Winthrop a sought after address.

A sought after suburb with everything at your fingertips. A great choice of parks which are well maintained surrounded by quality well looked after homes. Close to everything and with the new rail line even more transport friendly. Its a suburb everyone desires large blocks great homes and first class community.

Fantastic local school, a real drawcard for everyone to live here. Lovely parks, close to Fremantle, great shopping centres nearby, and wonderful environment for families. Lovely mix of families and retired people looking out for each other.
