Reviews of Wonthaggi, VIC

"Not much"

No decent cafes or food available. Drugs are rife in the Wonthaggi city centre. Like most rural area the council is run by leftards that really don't want to know you unless you are out there. At least it's not as bad as Melbourne.

Looking for a home in Wonthaggi?

"friendly town good community spirit"

Wonthaggi is a growing country town, with many excellent facilities (more to come like a university) including hospital, medical centeres, the library is outstanding, the staff are very accomodating and the facilities you have access to are great and lots of activities for people of all ages. My Grand son just did a coding class! lots of walks ie wetlands and desal all of which are constantly being improved. But the best bit is close access to the beach, you can't beat it summer or winter! I am friendly with all my neighbora and they're there if I need them but they respect my privacy. I am very happy here!

Great for

  • Can't fault It It has everything you want and more.
  • Brilliant town to live in and raise a family.
  • Close to Phillip Island, Kilcunda, Cape Paterson and Inverloch beaches
  • The rail trails, Baxters Loop track and wetlands walking tracks
  • The wildlife and flora is superb, Kangaroos, Wombats and plenty of birds

Not true. There is a museum called the Wonthaggi Museum and a museum at the State Coal Mine.

There is also excellent public transport to the rest of Victoria if you don't own a car. It takes longer of course due to stopping at intervals or changing routes. You can definitely get to Fountain Gate shopping centre from Wonthaggi as many people do go there for extra variety. There are busses and trains there from Cranbourne also.

The health industry and the building industry are actually the largest job providers in the area so if thats not going well it would be another reason. The town in very clicky, as are any country towns, but as with any trade getting your name out there and word-of-mouth jobs are important. In the mean time there are plenty of jobs going but the problem is there are also a lot of people applying for them so you have to ask around and get noticed. In the mean time there is volunteer work which can lead to employment. Education wise there is three primary schools and one secondary college, Chisholm TAFE, Bass Coast Specialist School, Bass Coast Adult Education Centre, University of the Third Age (U3A) retirees education centre, and Connecting Skills Australia (CSA) specialist developmental school, support and employment services/training. Plans are underway for a new tertiary education facility and you can always study a university degree by moving temporarily, communting or studying online. Free university courses are available through coursera.org

There are some drugs in town but thats in any large town in Australia so you'll be hard pressed to find a town that doesn't have some drugs. This is a national problem and is being dealt with as much is practically possible by the Police and health departments.

In bad weather you can still go out the same as you can in good weather only you'll need a coat. Obviously you can't go swimming at the beach in stormy weather or without a wetsuit. If you're very young or can't swim in the ocean the aquatic centre is a very nice space and is actually about to be renovated.

I beg to differ about there only being small parks. The Bass Coast and surrounding areas of Victoria have an endless array of outside areas for the public. Miles of beach to walk, rock/surf/shore fishing, loads of local music and other festivals, Phillip Island has a lot of activities as well at the GP circuit, miles of walking tracks, the new parklands with horse riding tracks at the Victorian Desalination Plant, Wonthaggi Wetlands via Dudley Road, Wonthaggi North School Wild Flowers Reserve via White Road, you can even eat lunch next to the Wonthaggi Wind Turbines. There are also heaps of markets including the Wonthaggi market on the 2nd Sunday of every month. Every weekend there is a market somewhere. Often times we just go to Melbourne or another regional town to go to a kids entertianment venue like Bounce in Blackburn (massive trampolines) or Dark Zone in Box Hill (Lazer Tag). It's only 1.5 hours to Melbourne so it's not a huge deal to go to a show. But locally the activities are more alond the lines of outdoor activities like golf, snorkelling at the Bunurong Marine Park, Guide Park - fensed playground, shaded picnic areas, tables, barbecues, Graham Street. Also beach tracks and shell collecting (permitted on Wonthaggi coast from San Remo, Victoria to Undertow Bay, past Safety Beach in Browns Bay Cape Paterson - Small sizes and small quantities of empty seashells, driftwood, dead fallen twigs's, sea glass and interesting rubbish). The local venues have live music and some really well known comedians. The council put's on family events like Christmas Carols and Carnivals.

You can visit or volunteer at the State Coal Mine, in fact there are thousands of volunteering opportunites which not only allow you to be a part of supporting the local community but can also lead to employment.

There are a lot of great things about Wonthaggi, it's all about being able to see them. It's a very kind and safe place to live. You can't say that about many places in the world. Many, many people would love to enjoy the relaxing life-style and standard of living that we take forgranted on a daily basis. So the cinemas are old and you have to drive thirty minutes to Leongatha. There are plans to built a complex for entertainment which is way overdue. In the mean time we have to be creative. Youth can still volunteer, mow the lawns, get a part-time job, learn to cook. They don't have to have entertainment handed to them, they just need a good bunch of friends, time and attention.

Keep abreast of local activities via the shire website and local advertising like facebook.

I guess it depends on how much of life you have experienced and what your comparisons are. Problem with people in this town they put their blinkers on.

Well I've travelled the world and lived in many places and so I'm able to see the good as well the bad. Wonthaggi is in Victoria so the weather is often cold. Being on the coast its often windy. I enjoy the lack of crowds and traffic. Its relaxing. The area offers a lot of possitives and if you can find work and put up with the winters you'll love it here.

Sit near wind turbines to eat lunch? Mate you're bloody having us all on. Nobody likes the wind turbines who the hell eats at them?

"A beautiful town - a well kept secret"

I live in Wonthaggi, it's a very friendly town. The air is fresh and the wind makes you feel alive. Neighbors give me plants from thier garden. I love that unlike a lot of towns I feel safe going jogging or walking around town by myself. Service is friendly and the schools are full of excellent and kind teachers. It's a very relaxing atmosphere and I couldn't live anywhere else. I've lived all over Victoria and in Queensland and it's much nicer here. There are no techno clubs but I'm not into that anyway. If you want more shops you just drive to Narre Warren. It's never too hot for long which makes me lethargic and the rain makes the vegies grow. It's legal to collect shells and things on Wonthaggi beaches and I just love going swimming in the summer or there are so many places to take photos.

Great for

  • Has everything you need and want in one place
  • A great place to base yourself and travel the globe
  • A safe place to live

Not great for

  • Parts of the town are have low income
  • There are no cons as all is 100%

"Great spot to go for walks, you can do a different one every day for a month"

I moved away from the area 8 years ago, couldn't stay away from Wonthaggi for long and was back within a year. The people are friendly and the air is clean. I love walking around the mine reserves and wetlands spotting the natural wonders if lucky on the day.

Great for

  • The rail trails, Baxters Loop track and wetlands walking tracks
  • The wildlife and flora is superb, Kangaroos, Wombats and plenty of birds
  • Close to Phillip Island, Kilcunda, Cape Paterson and Inverloch beaches

Not great for

  • Dangerous after dark
  • Lack of express transport options to Melbourne, 3 hours is too long
  • A long way from specialists, the trip to Monash Hospital is a long one

I love Wonthaggi and can't wait to be a full-time resident, the people are friendly the shopping is great and the food is fantastic and going to the movies is a blast from the past with the touch of year 2000+.
My family and I love the trip up and the choices of having either the country life or beach life is wonderful .

"Surrounded by beautiful hills and magnificent beaches"

Wonthaggi is a nice place to live. located by a rural feel as surrounded by hills and yet not too far away from the beach. less than five minute drive to Cape Patterson and ten to Inverloch, fifteen minute drive to San Remo & Philip Island. Great fishing and surfing along the coast. A country way of life with the locals being friendly.
There's local hospital, GP, shops, all major supermarkets, cafes, pubs, big w and bunnings getting built with a few other companies and shops getting developed into town.
Love the openness of Wonthaggi with just a hop skip and a jump around a beautiful cost line and what South Gippsland has to offer.

"I can't believe the low score!"

As someone who moved from the city to Wonthaggi a few years ago, I can tell you that it is a wonderful place to live!

The reason I moved here was to raise a young family in a clean, green and really friendly environment - when looking around for a house one day, I left with a big back of freshly picked veggies from a man we ended up talking to. Now I get lemons from across the road, eggs from around the corner and grow our own veggies which we share with the neighbours.

The locals are great, the surrounding countryside is beautiful and great beaches are just down the road in Cape Patterson, Harmers Haven or Williamson's Beach.

I loved the place so much I bought and have set up a business here at www.tizzbizzdesign.com.au . So come and say hi, you just may decide to stay for a while.
