Safety?

I am probably moving into an apartment around Ocean and Church. When I went to see it today I really like the area a few blocks above that, near the park. The area near the apartment was fine, more diverse for sure, which was fine, but I started to look up crime rates was a bit concerning. I understand keeping your smarts about you, and being street smart. I'm just looking to hear from someone that lives in the area, or knows the area. My boyfriend and I are moving together, so we will use the buddy system for awhile if need be.
