Transport
There are 3-4 trains per day to Melbourne (VLine) and Bus (Firefly) & Train (Countrylink) to Sydney 2 x day. Airport has regular flights to Brisbane, GC, Sydney & Melbourne. Within the town buses and taxis are available, but you would need to check the bus routes to make sure you choose an area to live that suits your transport needs. (Dysons & Martins bus services)
People
I've found the people to be friendly, and from many different walks of life. Many people that are new to town, fresh from the city. Many others that have moved around regional Australia for work. There is a small percentage of migrants which add some diversity to the city. And then a large number of people that have more or less lived here there whole life.
Lifestyle
As the house pricing is relatively affordable, you can really choose your own adventure. If you want to have an inner city unit with no land, its no more expensive than having a mid sized home in the suburbs. The variety of homes, hobbies and interests that are available is broad, with the advantage of it all being pretty close together.
We have not really had to go to Melbourne for anything, shopping wise. We go there for some specific clothing preferences, but everything else we need for house, pets, garden, groceries, building, hobbies, is well catered for.
