Reviews of Bakery Hill, VIC

"Awesome town with AMAZING streetscapes"

Ballarat is a sensational place to live as it has great infrastructure and services which is exactly what you would expect from a city. It has many great schools, Ballarart University and a number of significant hospitals.

There is also quite a bit of government funding that is being spent in Ballarat which will transform it into a major regional centre, especially once the $5B regional rail link is built.

There are many great cafes and restaurants and the walk around the lake is stunning.

Very under rated as a town to live in.

Looking for a home in Bakery Hill?

"Thriving indi scene and cool place to live..."

Ballarat is full of great old buildings with a thriving indi arts and music culture and a couple of cool little bars.

Its perfect for me as it has a super train that makes commuting daily to Melbourne easy - about 1 hour by train and always on time, unlike Melbourne's erratic PT system.

I chose to buy up here after renting in Brunswick, Melbourne for the last 10 years, so you can imagine my main priorities were the arts, great buildings and access to come cool bars/coffee shops and diverse arts community - Ballarat has all these as a smidgin of the price of Melbourne.

I love the duality of the hills and nature combined with hassle free access to Melbourne.

Like everywhere, it takes time to find the cool hidden bars and hangouts - but they do exist and are comparable to some of the more progressive places in Brunswick/Fitzroy.

"Moved from Melbourne to Ballarat and would never look back"

People have this perception that Ballarat is so far away, but it's only an hour from Melbourne and you really have little need to go there anyway once you realize how fantastic the facilities are here.

The range of shopping here is phenomenal, when you consider that most everything is in walking distance if you live near town.

The old style architecture is GORGEOUS and there is just so much of it you feel spoiled. What a beautiful city with stunning streetscapes so well preserved I know of no others like them.

Everyone is friendly, tradesmen are cheaper than in the big city too.

With the real estate prices so much more affordable here, and a fast train directly to Melbourne, I'd highly recommend Ballarat to anyone.

"Nice Little Town"

I have lived just out of Ballarat in a little place called Cardigan for the past 15 years (about 5km's out of the CBD) and have nothing but praise to offer for this area. I love the country area, and being only 10 minutes from the Shops, the kids catching a free "country" bus to school, (both primary and secondary) and bringing them home again. Only bad thing, is housing estates at Alfredton keep expanding and are starting to close in on my 10 acres. (no chance of me selling to them though)

"Cultural heritage at its best"

Sitting at the foothills of the Great Dividing Range in Central Western Victoria, Ballarat is a well-known city due to its gold mining history. Still popular today among residents and tourists largely because of its cultural heritage, architecture and stunning wide boulevards, Ballarat is Victoria’s largest inland settlement. The town is popular for its various sporting facilities including clubs for golf, horse and dog racing, football, cricket, basketball and rowing. It is also home to two universities and a large number of secondary and primary schools, making it an ideal location for families and young professionals. The town also boasts a number of local radio stations and newspapers, an art gallery, a number of theatres and restaurants, a cinema complex, a mid-week ghost tour, a wildlife park and botanical gardens. With a growing population of almost 90,000 people, Ballarat has a fantastic public transport system with trains, buses and regional coaches servicing local towns and the Melbourne CBD and a local airport. The area is also home to the award-winning tourist park and gold mining settlement recreation, Sovereign Hill.

"A thriving country town - a great place to raise a family"

Ballarat is Victoria's largest city after Melbourne. With a population nearing 90,000 and growing rapidly, Ballarat is going from strength to strength.

The city itself has a lot of heritage, stemming from its gold rush days. The streets are wide with many historic buildings and landmarks, with a lot of architecture from Australia's colonial days. There are a number of old homes which reflect this style. However it is now a large town with a number of subdivisions and more modern homes.

Ballarat is situated just over 100 km from Melbourne and offers a number of transport options, including bus and train.

With all of the major facilities, a strong focus on sport and many schools, this is a great spot to raise the family if you are looking for an alternative to the big city life in Melbourne.

Thanks for your comment. I am thinking of visiting Ballarat due to the great feedback. Hate to be the stickler but Ballarat is the largest inland city after Melbourne. Geelong is infact the second largest when taking in account the whole state.

"a wonderful country town of a decent size"

Only an hour out of Melbourne and with a great range of shops, there is a lot to like about Ballarat. You can get just about everything you need in town and it has a great vibe to it. Its country living with everything you could need in town or close by.
There is plenty for retirees with all the necessary services right up to meals on wheels on offer.
There is a good blend of houses at reasonable prices here and if you don’t mind a bit more of a commute you could live in the country and work in Melbourne. The block sizes are reasonable and a rarity in the larger cities so this would make a great place for raising a family.
There are a number of childcare centres, day care and afterschool care, schools and playgroups to make it a great place for families.

"Beautiful buildings and plenty of history"

Ballarat is a town about an hour’s drive away from Melbourne. It’s biggest claim to fame is Sovereign Hill, which is a gold rush like theme park that you see on all the brochures in town. The town itself has a lot of historical statues and buildings, hence making it a nice drive along the main stretch of town. The town centre is pretty small and driving up and down the town only takes about five minutes. The pubs are nice and they look like they attract decent bands to the area. The restaurant we visited was also very presentable and showed heart in their presentation. Whatever you do, do not stay at the Peppinella Motel, which you can just rename to "the flea bite motel". Not that we actually got bitten but it was just so old and musty and it seemed that it has not been dusted in years.

"Impressive historic buildings"

If you appreciate architecture, you'll be blown away by some of the historic buildings in Ballarat. It's also a great shopping hub and only a hour's drive from Melbourne. This city is small enough to retain a country atmosphere, but big enough to have all the services and facilities you would expect of a city. Home to Sovereign Hill, which attracts visitors from all over Australia and throughout the world, the only downside of living in Ballarat is the cool winters. This is a great place to bring up a family with some of the best education facilities in Australia.
