"Good- if you don't mind getting robbed!"

I only relied on the overall rating when deciding to shift here due to work last year. I enjoyed my stay till last December when i gad a break-in. Despite reporting nothing was done.
I still cant believe that I had someone break in while we were sleeping in the house last week. The cut through the fly screen.
I recommend staying on first floor orvup at least if you have to shift here.

"Excellent place for families"

I have moved to Blacktown 4 months back. It's peaceful and community spirit is high. Neighbours are good and welcoming. It's peaceful and good place to raise the kids. Bus transportation to the railway station makes it more suitable for working members. It's second cbd after Parramatta and growing very well. Everything is near by station including Westpoint shopping mall. I am enjoying it.Can't expect much

"Best value suburb"

I think Blacktown is well undervalued for the kind of suburb it is. With access to M2, M7, M4, Great Western Highway and 3 major shopping areas (Westpoint, shopping village and Home base), things just couldnt get better. Very convenient. I think the ill-reputation that it carries does great to property buyers as they could get good value properties, however I think the ill-reputation is silly as for a big innercity like Blacktown, the crime rates are proportionately lower than many other suburbs.

***updated in 2016 ***I bought a property here in 2009 and sold it to move out to stay closer to work. Later decided to come back and bought another one. NBN is almost everywhere now and couldn't be happier with this new speed. My daughter now studies at St Patrick's Primary School and absolutely loves it.. we feel its a gem of a school with great teachers. The area seems to be getting expensive now. Blacktown hospital redeveloped has boosted the health profile and so did the recent Showground. The beautiful Nurragingy Reserve is minutes from where I live.
With show many entertainment options locally available, I challenge anyone to tell me a suburb that has it all like Blacktown does... yes except beach.

Treesnleaves Good review, Blacktown does have a bad reputation I know but I have family that live out there and there is a real sense of community in Blacktown that other suburbs do not have despite being very far away from most things, I enjoy my visits Blacktown

"Blacktown? Besafetown."

Blacktown is a modernized suburb located near Parramatta & provides many convenient features such as shopping options, affordable cost of living & rental value, a few medical facilities & excellent public transport. Blacktown offers much to its residents & its visitors with various aspects to flaunt in a modern town & great location!
All seems quite well so far, right? Unfortunately, there is a downside to what this modern town of wonderful features offers people in Sydney. This suburb is notorious for all types of crime ranging from Assault to Theft; You name it & its probably achieved some of the highest rates of whatever crime you can think of.
I truly do not understand the false & biased reviews left by some of the users of homely. I completely believe it is untrue & their intentions of sugarcoating this suburb is far from reality.

Within this suburb there is always a police van with a group of four policemen standing outside Westpoint all day & suddenly at night, they've vanished. Now have a think to yourself why in the world does a suburb require 4 policemen patrolling on guard outside Westfields in contrast to other areas where you're quite lucky to manage to see a policeman in a week! The answer? It's simple!

There are a vast amount of housing commissioners, low-socioeconomic status-ed ethnics, uneducated & poorly attitude teens wanting to start trouble & disrespectful, degenerate young males whom love to degrade women & be violent wanting to express their dominance. These residents are often the main cause of the majority of middle level crime that is infecting the Western + South Western Suburbs.

This suburb is in such a desperate need of safety for regular citizens that a police van & 4 policemen are stationed outside Westpoint a public shopping centre area where it should be deemed safe. There are so many teens sitting on the sidewalk staring out *giving mad dirties* to regular citizens & shouting as they please at women that pass by. Of course, these are small trivial matters that aren't too concerning. However, once it becomes night the policemen return to their families as regular people do too. If in the daylight with police protection, regular low-level crime is extremely common, at night it is flourishing with dangerous crimes that terrorize the locals. Every night is a struggle for safety for people who return home late with Assaults, Robbery, Theft, Malicious Damage to Property, etc.

Truly, one of the most worst suburbs I've been to in regards to safety in all of Western Sydney. Otherwise, the suburb does have so much to offer to regular citizens (only from 5am - 8pm). Otherwise, expect yourself to be involved & be a part of someone else's criminal activities.

*I encourage you to visit this suburb; especially at night to witness the criminal events that occur on a daily basis*
**All the other reviews that only state the pros of this suburb are correct, in fact more detailed than this review. However, please consider the cons as they heavily outweigh the pros of what this suburb can offer**

qzone2006 I live in blacktown for almost 11 years now, really love this place. Never have problem.go and ask the local here, why more and more people moving to here, no one ask you to walk around at night. I feel pretty safe here, good neighbour,my kids love the school.actually I can buy house in east or north suburb ,but I want to stay here.blacktown will be better and better,I am very sure about it.

arezghian There are few suburbs in Sydney that it is safe around those train stations during late night times. Look at the crime map shown in the local news papers and daily newspapers. Believe me you will find many worse places than Blacktown.

KO
KO Good Lord what an uneducated and heavily misindormed review. Its one thing to be entitled to an opinion, it's quite another to state that opinion as fact.

The truth is that Blacktown City is the largest suburban city in the eastern part of Australia. The suburbs in it range from lower middle class areas which offer public housing for those in it to new estates bordering affluent areas.

Crime statistics available online show violent crimes are not highest in blacktown and that crimes of opportunity (people leaving gps/phones/wallets in plain sight in cars etc) are common.

No place in this world is immune from crime or unfavourable behaviour but to suggest a police van with 4 officers are parked out front of westpoint shopping centre due to crime is sadly so far from the truth its almost laughable.

Please understand that the local POLICE STATION is across the road from the centre... I'll allow your imagination to calm down and digest that fact

While blacktown is called home to all types of people from all walks of life, I am proud to call it home and appreciate all it has to offer.

Jason94
Jason94 Many places worse than Blacktown? Won't deny that.
However, my argument wasn't to claim that it was the worst place to live in Sydney. It was to justify the negative aspects of the suburb and bring an UNBIASED review as many reviewers here that leave only positive comments are local residents. Honestly, I'm extremely confused as to what is so hilarious about my statement about the 4 police officers and a van. Do you travel? Have you been to any other suburbs? Or do you just stay in the place that you like to call "home"? Because frankly, so far Blacktown is the only suburb I've seen that have police patrol so regularly in a public area in clear view in broad daylight.
"all types of people from all walks of life" - Does that also include the foul-mouthed, disgusting housos that take our tax money to pay for their uneducated life of drugs, cigarettes and alcohol? Troubled teens particularly islander/ middle-easterns that have nothing to do but loiter and intimidate people minding their own business?
Don't take the review I've posted in the wrong way. I've stated both PROs and CONs, everything has an advantage and disadvantage. You're being the typical biased reviewer only seeking positive information on the suburb.

KateS1
KateS1 Jason, how long have you lived here? I have lived here for over 3 years and I have not had a single problem to date, either at home or when at Westpoint. I always have a good chuckle at the "junkies" reference that even my own mother likes to throw around, because it is plain outdated and ridiculous. The demographics have been changing in the last 5 years and will continue to change over the years. You should know that Blacktown is no longer becoming affordable for purposes of housing commission and they are becoming fewer as the years go by.

I will be honest in saying that 15-20 years ago I would have not lived here, even if you gave me a house free of charge. Now? I live here with no questions/qualms/problems. I'm glad I didn't pay attention to the "Blacktown is bad" complex that so many people seem to have and finally took the plunge. It allowed me to enter the property market AND get ahead, when I otherwise would have been renting in other suburbs.

I was reading these reviews for fun until I came across yours and was horrified at the amount of negativity and bias. The police station is in fact, directly opposite the shopping centre, which is why you probably saw so many police vans close by. :) I agree, there ARE all walks of life here - from housing commission folks to professionals like our family... and GASP! Even refugees (who keep their garden tidier than mine).

I've done the foolish thing and accidentally left things outside and I wake up the next morning and they're still here. Sheer luck? I think not. This is a life long habit of mine (forgetting things) and we've been robbed because of it in other suburbs. I have lived in 6 different suburbs in the last 12 years and so I think I'm qualified to compare Blacktown to other Sydney suburbs. For your reference, they were North Sydney, Inner west, Hills district and Greater west suburbs. Here in 'Blacky' as we like to affectionately call it, our mortgage is low, we have land (and not a courtyard) and it's very quiet here as well.. I really couldn't ask for more. No wait, I could - I'd like more green. :) Please Blacktown council, grow more trees! If there is one thing that is a con about this suburb, it's not enough green like say, the over priced Hills district next door. Other than that, no issues. Oh and just so it doesn't look like I am beefing up my words or are unfairly biased, I will admit we have had a domestic incident in the street in which police were called. Once. In three years. I would hardly call that crime central.

Praz Been here in Blacktown since 2009. No problems. I can sense that locals don't have issues and outsiders seem to know more about issues. This is still, in my opinion one of the best and undervalued suburbs to live in Sydney. Buy while you can. Haters just stay away.

"Blacktown's a BIG suburb with different markets within the same suburb. South Blacktown always sells like hotcakes."

Blacktown's a fantastic suburb to live in, but there are different parts with some more desirable than others. South Blacktown near the Prospect border seems to be the most desirable particularly if you have kids and want to get into the only decent public school in the area which is Mitchell. They have a huge number of out of area people trying to enrol but only take a handfull every year. The transport is fantastic with lots of buses proximity to the M4 and M2. The new Wet n Wild water park is in Prospect as well, so South Blacktown is the go if you want to be close to that. There's been new development in Prospect with new houses bumping up the prices of older more affordable stock in surrounding streets.

"Blacktown - Get on Board"

Blacktown is fast shaking its tag as a "bad" suburb. With its major train station and great shopping centre already well known, the showground has just undergone a major transformation into a social hub for families, and next is "Wet 'n Wild" opening later this year. Put this together with a great variety of housing, that is still very affordable, and you have a suburb where people are flocking to in their droves!

"Good place to live."

I moved to Blacktown 2 years ago and work in the city. When I moved here, I worried about living here since I heard it is not a safe area to live. However I like to live here now. It is safe, convenient, quiet and peaceful. It has a huge shopping centre. There are trains quite a lot of train to city, so I don’t need to wait for a long time. One pity thing is there is not a nice park near my place.

"Simply lovely area!"

I lived in Blacktown since last one year with my wife. At first, Blacktown attracted us as a new immigrants with its comparatively affordable housing prices and transport. But, with a few month of staying here we simply fell in love with the area and we bought a property.
It has excellent access to transport and amenities. Only 30 mins to city and different areas using M4, M2, M7 and wonderful train and bus transport. The cost of living is comparatively lower than other suburbs. The shopping is really wonderful in Blacktown. There are huge investments are going on in Blacktown. I do not think the housing prices will remain same until very near future.

"Blacktown - the new place to go"

Just recently bought a property in Blacktown. It is not that bad as others think. In fact, it is far more better than other suburb.
Norfolk street is a great place to stay. Kids play at the street with their cheerful face, streets are clean and neighbour are very nice. Never see any junkie around this area at all.
I believe every places has their good and bad. No one ask you to walk around the station at midnight and carry lots of money with you.
Blacktown council just spent $16 million to develop an art and entertainment center in Blacktown showground. I am sure the property price in Blacktown will grow and it can easily double the property price in the next 5 years. Which part of Sydney you can buy a property around $350k with a good public transport, big shopping center and good medical facility around it?
Blacktown, GO!

"Blacktown Best in the West"

Originally from NZ and call Blacktown home for over 10years. Moved to the North Shore for a year once and always found myself coming back to Blacktown down the M2 every week because Blacktown had cheaper shopping including food, clothes and haircuts along with not having to have a permit to park outside your own house, plenty of things to see and do and it has a better community feel. So much to do in Blacktown cause it has; only Drive in Movies in Sydney, Largest Xtreme Screen in Aussie, Westpoint a huge shopping complex which has hosted many stars around the world that Westfields doesnt, Over 5 super RSL and Workers Clubs, Featherdale Wildlife Park, 4 big swimming complexes, Parlea Markets the largest in Southern Hemisphere, Eastern
Creek Raceway, Go Carts, Extreme Paint Ball, over 45 parks for kids to play along with the epic Narrangingy Reserve BUT to come in the near future to Blacktown is Sydneys largest Wet n Wild Water Park and Sydneys
largest IKEA. There is heaps more such as the easy access to go anywhere like Blue Mountains, Newcastle, Canberra and the City from Blacktown cause of the M4, M7, M2 and Great Western Highway. No I'm not the Mayor, I'm just a proud resident of Blacktown and yes there are "junkies" but they only number less than 5/6 near the taxi rank by the train station, as they go to the only place that will help them, Blacktown Hospital. I've never seen them hurt anyone and they havnt hurt me and considering that they account for less than 1% of Blacktown's growing population of over 280,000, I don't give them a second thought like the ones I see in Parramatta and the City. Part of me doesn't want people to catch on how Blacktown is actually a very cool place to live, because then there will be too many people and they will push the costs of living up here. So hoping some people stay ignorant and continue to think Blacktown is a "bad place", so my very comfortable lifestyle that I have here in Blacktown continues for longer :)

"Great family suburb"

When we were looking to buy a property three years ago, everyone discouraged us to even look at Blacktown. It is strictly blacklisted in everyone's (that I knew) eyes. However, we did hundreds of property inspections, drive bys and got hold of a map that has HC properties and managed to do our own research. This suburb ticks all the boxes. You can easily find a good property that is close to schools, child care, transport and shopping all within 1-2 kms.
There is noticeably less neighbourly spirit here for some reason, but me and husband work fulltime in the city so we have no real time to see who lives next door. Kids had neighbouring friends when we lived in Burwood (true!) but they have'nt found anyone here. Due to the diverse cultures here I guess everyone sort of keep to their own circles! Shopping is great with everything one needs in Westpoint or St martins village. When we bought our home we found everything to furnish our home in Homebase and St Martins Village!!! Child care availability is also great! I strongly recommend south blacktown. Great schools and peace and quiet (actually too quiet).
Families that are looking for easy access to leisure centre may want to live towards sunnyholt rd.

Yes, stay away from station or travelling by train in the late hours! Its just full of awful junkies ALL the time.

"A great place to live"

As a resident of Blacktown City all my life, I am happy to offer my opionion that for first home buyers, you can buy an older house on a bigger block that you may wish to renovate or knock down and rebuild. There are good schools, easy public transport and friendly neighbourhoods.

"Big self contained suburb, with great public transport options"

Hi All,,,
Just came to stay here a while ago,, and I will admit that it is a great place to stay,,,,, Just one quick thing,,, always stay on the western side of blacktown, which is somewere near Sunnyholt road as the T Way is great,, in connecting with Blacktown train station,,, or connecting to M7. I personally have never experienced trouble, but I guess properities are still well priced,, compared to unrealistic prices across other suburbs,, great starter suburb,,, peace and quite, if you stay away from station,,,,, T Way takes approx 5 to 11mins net to get to station,,,,,,,,,,,,

"Great quite place to stay"

I have been living here for quite a while, and I think its nice quite gr8 suburb,, love the peace, only one recommendation, staying away from station helps, as far as away from station you are better,,,,, also the public transport is good so you are well connected to station,,, so stay away from all noise..Values of townhouses are alright,,, As I have just bought a new townhouse,,, in north blacktown,,, and there is only a hype abt north and south blacktown,, just stay away from station,,,,,,,, good living,,, new properties,,, well connected with m4 and m7,,, and at the end of the day,,, m7 will also get rid of toll,,,,,,,, only 7 mins from bella vista,,,,,,,,,,,love it

"Best for family and affordable property"

good for family, couple, raising kids, very convinent to trains, buses, affordable public transport and taxis. schools and medical facilities are great. good neighbouthood and very peaceful, Blacktown is not a noisy suburb. It is like living into a small town. Neither you will feel like a CBD or country. Blacktown has got nice shopping centre westpoint and close to Doondside IGA SUPA. which is great for shopping. Most banks, postoffices and all aminities are available. There is a crime but it is decreasing a lot. Much safer than before.

"Close to everything"

Blacktown is a suburb with everything. Great shopping, libraries, hospital, schools and everything else - you barely need to leave your own suburb for anything. Thousands of jobs in the area. Not that safe though, and quite noisy. Yet the suburb has some very affordable houses.

The houses are old, and the traffic not good, but very affordable.

"Affordable housing in Sydney"

Blacktown is located in Western Sydney and is well connected by buses, trains and the M4 motorway. Many families choose to live out this way because of the affordability of houses and the convenience of getting to work in the city by public transport. Houses here tend to be of an average size and most residents are young working families.

Blacktown itself is a very self-contained suburb with a mall that houses many department stores, boutiques, cafes, restaurants and banks. For entertainment around Blacktown, there is the Blacktown Workers Sports Club and the Blacktown RSL. Both venues provide live entertainment on different nights, dinner shows and etc to entertain the whole family.
