"snobby"

People there are complete snobs, if you live in moss vale or Mittagong they will look down on you. shop workers are usually rude but the shops are all pretty close together, on weekends its not the safest place to be on the main street due to the pub crawlers, way to expensive, and public transport is horrible.

"Overall pretty good"

Lived there many years ago, moved to Sydney and just bought back. Although it's changed of course with many people it's a nice mix of social maturity giving some decent food outlets and decent clothing shops. While it might be more expensive than Moss Vale or suburbs in Sydney, it's not over top and modest compared to Cape Cod or the Hamptons.

Never had a break in, minimal crime and yes although there are some stuck up people so what. Let's be honest, an area with wealth is much more pleasant than an area without it (I've been there) so all the knockers are free to leave when they want and move to where they want, the beauty of Australia as a free country. I think much of wealth in Bowral is old money rather than new so the GFC effect is over rated on this town.

Look around and stay, its a relaxed town.

"Worst town i have ever lived, unfriendly community"

people are rude and pushy, literally they push you in the street as they are walking past. very slow drivers half of them don't know what they are doing. majority of people drive fwd cars and honestly don't know why they bought one considering they don't know how to drive them, the cars are too big for them to handle. neighbors are rude. rent and living expenses are quite high. I thought this would have been a nice place to live because the town looks nice and clean and looks quite peaceful but living here for over 12 months I have not enjoyed it at all. happily to be moving. this will be the place for you if you walk around with your nose up in the air.

"Overrated"

It is basically Double Bay in the country. Rude shop owners and arrogance in general. There are many, many poor people in Bowral, but they are not catered for at all. This is the town that didn't want Vinnies in the main shopping area of the town because it would "lower the tone". That story encapsulates Bowral perfectly.

avalon555
avalon555 I can't believe that Bowral has nothing to offer, maybe have a look for yourself. This is a truly negative spin on a good town. Please note not many people have written reviews so this review could lower the tone on this town. Please spend a weekend as I did in the highlands, Its a great location ps don't overlook Moss Vale for a visit

Grouch
Grouch I have lived here for 16 years; have had to because of family commitments. Coming down for a weekend as a tourist does not give anyone a true picture of day to day life here. If you were to live here with health issues and a limited income I think you would have a different view. It's a very different life for wealthier people.

HappyChap
HappyChap So glad you don't live here anymore. Negativity is so counterproductive particularly when you get and don't give. It may not have occurred to you but nobody here was happy about that incident regarding Vinnies except you and the media. It appears you live in a perfect world, wherever that may be? However do try and be happy and spread a little bit of Joy.

movedonman
movedonman A weekend in Bowral is not living there. There are no meaningful jobs for adults and the divorce rate is statistically the highest in Australia (fact). That says it all. If you live there, you are mid forties, mid life crisis and divorce on the way, or retired and too poor to spend any money in town to support development and employment. It is truly over rated and over priced. Move to SA or Qld and ave your money. There is also some pretty serious crime in Bowral that is swept under the carpet and hidden to make it look sweet and nice. They are still finding bodies in Belangalo State Forest!

Lancer1 HappyChap's comments have been toned down since they were first posted. He was very nasty and turned this page into a place to personally attack someone with a different view. I agree with movedonman: don't post comments on a place unless you have lived there for at least a couple of years.

AngusJW
AngusJW I have lived in Bowral for 18 years and I love it. We don't have a big income but the countryside and people are really nice here. You'd have to be pretty nasty to find the locals here snobby or nasty. As for the crime comment, firstly Belangalo forest isn't in Bowral and secondly we get nothing more than the very odd break in or car accident. I feel very safe walking home at night. We have great medical facilities, shopping centre, public transport, schools and much more.

Lancer1
Lancer1 Good for you, glad you're happy. As for crime, you must be very lucky not to have been exposed to any. But as for only nasty people finding the people nasty and snobby here, that is a bit crook. They are not all awful, but I remember at Easter hearing two men talking about the undesirables moving in to Bowral, and the need for another war to cull the numbers. No, not all nasty; but the ones that are can be masters of the art.

MattR2
MattR2 Statistically Bowral LGA has half the break and enters as the average for all LGAs for NSW. 9.9% of all people are divorced, fact. Penrith shows 12.7% of people divorced.
Not sure where people on here get their stats form.

af2
af2 Bowral was rated one of the rudest places to livenot to long ago, and on the weekends at night it is quite unsafe to walk the main street because of the pub crawlers. a lot of people around the highlands are very defensive when someone does not like the area. it probably is a nice area for people just visiting here and there but finding full time work and getting around without a car is hard and even with a car finding parking can be annoying.

"Overrated"

Rude overrated town.

Ppl are rude,aggressive and snobs.

This town is no better than there smaller comminuties and only cater for the wealthy, there high street is over priced and quiet frankly boring.

Great for a stop over or weekend get away but not worth the cost of living on a daily basis, prefer Mittagong shopping facilities and friendly residence.

Mattbinange Lived there for 2 1/2 years after buying our dream home and were living our dream for the first 2 weeks! Then we were approached by all the neighbors, not for a welcome but to inform us how they wanted us to maintain the house and gardens! Most of the shopkeepers were rude and snobbish and if your not a so called " local" the prospects of getting any type of employment is minimal as they really like to hire their own. I used to go there for w/e but since leaving 2 years ago, I have NEVER been back and can't even entertain the thought of even passing through! Suffered an asthma attack, went to Bowral hospital emergency, after seeing a doctor was told to sit on a chair in the hallway with my husband told to administer medication to me every 20 minutes for 4 hours before being told I could go.. A very TRUE story! I hate the place!!!!!!!!!!!

Bowral
Bowral Bowral from a local perspective is unfriendly on the outside but once you know everyone its nice. You never really get too close though as its insular and news travels and gets mis interpreted. Smart people in country towns keep their personal life close to their chests. Its really contradictory in a way as you would think you would get to share your life more. The anonimity of sydney is a relief as no one is eavesdropping constantly on your life.

"Great Place to Live...."

It is a great place to live. People are friendly and thougt the traffic is getting heavier than it once was, nothing like the nightmare of Sydney traffic which is why we left Sydney. However, don't believe all that you hear about how long it takes to get to Sydney. If you go in the morning it can take over 2 hours and returning late afternoon on a Friday can take 3 hours!! We go to Sydney very seldom because all we need is right here. Better to go by train.
Neighbours in my area are very friendly so that we have drinks on Fridays and BBQ when the weather is warm.We came here from Tasmania and this is so much more interesting with lots of courses run by U3A, fabulous choice of films through the regular cinema and the Film Society.Lots of intellectual stimulation, particularly when compared with Tasmania...much as I love the place it was boring!!

"Bowral, still an enjoyable experience."

Bowral has always been an upmarket town with a variety of shops and resturants to keep you entertained. Once a weekend getaway for city dwellers and retirees, it has grown in population and as such is no longer the quiet town, but a bustling town with well manicured parkes and gardens. It now boasts many walking/cycling tracks and is still surrounded by green rolling hills. The main thoroughfair can reach a peak in the morning and afternoon, reaching Mittagong and Mossvale the other way. What do I love most, the resturants, the creative feel, variety of architecture and lushious gardens with a country backdrop.

"Gorgeous place to live"

Bowral is a gorgeous Town surrounded by beautiful countryside, people are polite and friendly but of course you only get what you give so I suppose there are always those with attitude that are never happy unless they complain about something. If you live here you soon discover the great community feeling and the wonderful activities that you can involve yourself in. Most social functions that people engage in are fund raisers to do our bit to contribute to the community We have so many Sydney friends that always love to visit for a few days. We enjoy living here and only stay in our Sydney unit when necessary. Fortunately with the age of tech. you don't have to work in a big city anymore. So please don't tell everyone how good it is here.

Bowral
Bowral I know the lifestyle choice of bowral is a good one for people with small kids and older ageing 65+ however the teens have little to do. Many of the pensioners and self funded retirees are asset rich and majorly cash poor. The hospice shop in bowral has expanded to cater for oldies downsizing and uncashed formerly wealthy retirees trying to recoop their loss of lifestyle from the gfc. Socially the ring leaders determine if you are in or out! You are warned off others by ringleaders, its really school playground social exclusion, gossip and really its so prejudicial and many small minded bubble living clusters of comfy groups.

"Bowral, Relaxing friendly Town"

Bowral is the major administration centre of the Southern Highlands of NSW. Being an easy drive south west of Sydney, Bowral has a relaxing atmosphere yet offers plenty to see and do. Apart from the many shops and sidewalk cafes there are also major shopping malls, craft shops and galleries to visit. Bowral is home the Bradman Museum. There are many historic building to admire in the town as well as spectacular gardens. There are cycling paths, a swimming pool, walking track along the Wingecarribee River, sports fields and numerous parks. There are some good bush walking tracks on Mt Gibraltar and the nearby forest called Gibbergunyah. Bowral is a lovely place to visit with friendly helpful locals.

Bowral Correct, better to visit than to live in for too long. Depends on your age and if you are conventional and conservative the. You will fit right in. Not that many highly educated people in their late 30's or 40's living in bowral full time. Living in bowral us a fortnightly trip to work in sydney is a great lifestyle balance. Keeps the mind open!

"Upmarket country town"

Bowral is about an hour's drive south of Sydney. Due to its proximity to Sydney, many Sydney-siders turn to Bowral as a weekend destination. It is a very upmarket country town that features many grand multi-million dollars homes and acreage. There are plenty of golf courses around the area too. When I visited Bowral, I felt that all these characteristics made Bowral somewhat pretentious and very "touristy". Despite this, Bowral is definitely neat and clean.

As like the many other country towns, Bowral has a main street. However, this main street does not have that nice and warm country feeling. Instead, it reminded me of Sydney. The shops here are no different to those that you can find in Sydney and this just makes me wonder why are people so attracted to Bowral when they can just stay in Sydney for the same things. In general, if you are after a quiet weekend getaway, I do not recommend Bowral. Bowral is truly for the rich and retired.
