"Leafy Como"

I have lived in this beautiful suburb for 25 years. It is close to the city and the beautiful Swan River. There are lots of trees and parks.

Looking for a home in Como?

"Great Educational Precinct"

Many people move into Como due to the large number of great primary, secondary schools plus proximity to Curtin University.
Its 10 mins into the city but relatively quiet and has a great communal feel. Divided colloquially between "riverside" and "non riverside" of Canning Highway. The riverside is dearer than the non-riverside but the non riverside is closer to Penrhos College for girls.
A wonderful collection of cafes and small shops. Easy access via buses into the City

"Como - Great little Riverside Suburb with History ..."

Como is a lovely little suburb split in two by Canning Highway. Riverside Como (which borders South Perth) has the infamous Preston St, Precinct, with the award-winning Karalee Shopping Centre, a great cafe strip, the historical Cygnet theatre, river walks, great transport link, and popular schools. The Eastside of Como (often referred to as the Avenues) offers some larger home sites, mixed in with higher density, has some good schools, shops, and is home to Penrhos College, along with other government schools. It offers great transport links, Freeway access North and South and is very convenient to South Perth and Perth CBD.

"All rounder excellent suburb"

Como is a very large suburb with people differentiating the areas by Riverside or Non Riverside. It is a very popular place to live and better value than South Perth. Como Primary School has a fantastic reputation and there are plenty of shops and strips of cafes to enjoy.

"Top Spot!"

Como is an absolutely terrific place to live! It's close to the city, yet quiet and peaceful. There are plenty of shopping and eating options, nice parks, and an all-round friendly atmosphere. Como is also close to the Swan and Canning rivers and there are some really nice places to go walking, running, and cycling. I bought a 2-bedroom villa here about a year and a half ago and now I wouldn't want to live anywhere else!

Great for

  • Close to the freeways
  • Close to the river.
  • A lot of parks
  • Good public transport

"One of Perths best"

Moved to como with my wife couple of years ago. great public transport, great proximity to everything that you need and good feel of security. In the inner streets (not canning highway) you will mostly hear crickets at night and the occasional dog bark during the day. few good restaurants around. a couple of good shopping malls near by (garden city has everything..), very easy to get to city.
also great schools in the suburb if you have kids.
most streets have an affluent feel in them. good mix of young professionals and families with quite a few retires around. being so close to the city and south perth makes it one of perth best suburbs south of the river.

Great for

  • A lot of parks
  • Good public transport
  • Close to the freeways
  • Close to the river.

"Watch out for the aircraft noise"

We lived in the lower part of Como for 10 years but recently moved because of the massive increase in aircraft noise. You get planes on departure routes from both runways of Perth airport flying over Como and Manning, Salter Point, Waterford and Applecross. If you don't like aircraft noise DO NOT move to these areas. You have been warned. Do your research. It was a fantastic area but the sheer increase in aircraft numbers due to the mining boom and increased travel to Bali etc with no curfew at Perth airport means 24/7 aircraft. You will easily get 120 a day fly over when the winds are from the South, South East, South West and Westerlies are the worst. Worst time for aircraft noise is around 5:15am when all the flights go up to the mines. There are clumps of planes at 12:00midnight, 1:00am, 2:00am a couple here and there at 3:00am and 4:00am and then about 20 or so from 5:15am to 6:00am...then they are spread out during the day. Lots during the day. Nights are worst for noise.

Great for

  • Close to the river.
  • Close to the freeways

Really?? Thanks for the aircraft comment. We may be moving to WA outerskirts of Perth CBD and my hubby like this suburb as some of his workmates love there. I actually was told there was a curfew on flights after midnight?? but obviously there isn't. Now this is making me think twice about this suburb. I really need a safe, community feel, family friendly, good schools, parks etc kinds suburb....doing my reasearch online but without physically seeing these for real I need local feedback on what suburbs to look at....Was thinking Victoria Park, Como, Rockingham, Lathlain????????????? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

ALG

@elijah2905: I have lived in Como for almost two years and have not experienced any aircraft noise (only once in a blue moon), so I find it very hard to believe johnb's review. Perhaps aircraft noise is only a problem for the lower part of Como (around Manning) because, as far as I'm aware, it's not a problem in the greater part of Como, which is a quiet and peaceful place on the whole.

potsy

I am a light sleeper and occasionally the aircraft noise does wake me up - mainly at 1 and 2 am in the morning. That said, the neighbour's rusty whirlybird affects me more. Like anything though, you get used to it. I would definitely prefer Como over Lathlain, Vic Park and Rockingham! But you will pay more too to live in Como. I want a bigger house with yard but think that what I want is not really available in Como unless you go East Como which doesn't really have the same feel as West of Canning Highway. The schools are great, easy access into the CBD, as well as heading East or West, North or South. Its a good central location with some great amenities. The City of South Perth needs a bit of a kick up the bum to provide a swimming pool. Its on the cards I hear.

GummyB

Perth is small and you can hear airplane noises in a lot of suburb ... but Como is very far from the airport and impact should be minimal...

Plenty of Aircraft noise which is disappointing. I agree with john. Really is one of the let downs of the area unfortunately. The fly right over and bad In the morning.

All of central Perth seems to be effected to one degree or other, even Nedlands, Claremont, Fremantle. The planes are really noticeable in Salter Point and Mount Pleasant, as they often fly directly over the Canning River at night but at least the newer ones climb so steeply they are typically much higher by the time they are over the Swan.

"Leafy suburb - loads of parks"

This is the first place we bought a house in since moving with my wife from the UK. It's a great little suburb, but is ideally placed close to the city and so close to the Swan River.

My wife is from Perth originally and couldn't wait to live here as well. Preston Street is a great little shoping strip and the Cygnet Cinema is just brilliant.
